Former mixed martial arts (MMA) referee John McCarthy does not agree with Brendan Schaub that the best fighters only compete in the UFC.

Earlier this month on the Joe Rogan podcast, Schaub made the claim that the best fighters are not competing in Bellator or ONE Championship, but solely in the UFC.

His thinking was that the competition is at the highest level in the UFC, so it is only natural to believe that the best fighters are with the Las Vegas-based promotion.

However, McCarthy disagrees. Speaking on his “Weighing In” podcast, McCarthy made a comparison using Schaub himself:

“Brendan, you fought in the UFC. Congratulations, that was great,” McCarthy said (via BJ Penn). “You had a couple of good fights. But I can point out fights that he had against guys that beat him that lost to guys outside of the UFC.

“Back when [Schaub] was fighting, if they had brought Fedor Emelianenko over, because Brendan is a UFC fighter he’s better than Fedor Emelianenko? He’s going to win? Does that make sense? You’re a UFC fighter, you’re better? It just doesn’t add up.”

Although it should be noted that McCarthy is currently contracted to Bellator as a commentator and analyst, he does have a point.

Some of the very best fighters compete outside the UFC such as Eddie Alvarez, Demetrious Johnson, Douglas Lima and Gegard Mousasi to name a few.

Regardless, what do you think of the debate?

Former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub is the latest to send a message to ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith.

Smith created headlines following UFC 246 when he claimed Donald Cerrone gave up in his 40-second TKO defeat to Conor McGregor earlier this month. Those comments rubbed many people the wrong way, including the likes of Joe Rogan and Conor McGregor.

And although Schaub does appreciate Smith and his work, he felt the comments were disrespectful and that nobody is really tuning in to hear his analysis of mixed martial arts (MMA):

“The MMA community’s not tuning in the post-fight show to see Stephen A. Smith,” Schaub said on his podcast (via BJ Penn). “Stephen A. Smith’s one of my favs, I love Stephen A. Smith. I love him and this, I don’t need this. If he’s on there great, also my only issue with it, do this, you can stay in the UFC stuff what you’re doing, I’m sure they’ll have your back but the problem is just don’t disrespect guys. You can make your point without being disrespectful.

“I’ve learned that the hard way. You say one thing and then guys hear and it sounds like disrespect. I get that but especially if you’re Stephen A. Smith and you’re so new, you’re just dipping your toe in water, don’t sh*t on one of our favs, man.”

Schaub went on to add that someone with more knowledge of MMA would have been preferable to Smith — such as former UFC middleweight Chael Sonnen who already works as an analyst for ESPN:

“Ain’t nobody tuning in to that post-fight show to hear his commentary,” Schaub added. “It would’ve gotten much further if it was Brett Okamoto and Joe Rogan. Why not have Chael [Sonnen] do that? Rogan and Chael?

“What is it, the best combo ever? Do that, do that man. That’d be a phenomenal tag team. Probably the best, the best in the world. There’s no other two people I’d rather listen to on the planet talk fighting than Joe Rogan and Chael Sonnen.”

Do you agree with Schaub?

Everyone is piling on Colby Covington after having his jaw broken and suffering a late TKO loss in his welterweight title bid against Kamaru Usman at UFC 245 over the weekend.

Covington likes to talk a lot of trash leading up to fights, but beyond that, people seem more offended and against him due to his staunch support of current United States President Donald Trump. After his loss over the weekend, many, even outside the MMA community, rejoiced at his downfall.

However, this doesn’t sit well with former UFC heavyweight-turned-comedian Brendan Schaub. Taking to his podcast, “Below The Belt,” Schaub explained that people fail to realize Covington is simply playing a character. (H/T MMA News)

“I think a lot of times too because of Colby’s antics, and he did it to attract fans and he did it for this exact reason he wants you to hate him so you tune in to see him lose. But that being said, you realize he’s just playing a character. That’s like getting mad at Robert De Niro for playing The Irishman when you see him on the street. Like, ‘what the f*ck dude?!’ He’s like, ‘what? That’s a character.’”

Schaub proceeded to blast those who were using the #MAGAJaw on social media this week, telling them to grow up and realize Covington is simply playing a character.

“For Colby it’s a character, he just happens to be the most hated character and rides with Trump. Obviously there’s the issue with Trump being the president and the moves he makes. But if you ask Colby like, ‘hey man what do you think of the stuff going on with Trump right now with impeachment?’ Or you ask him on his immigration laws, he doesn’t know.

“It’s just a bit, man. It’s just a bit. So when you can take that out, which for a lot of people is hard to do, and look at Colby as an athlete as a fighter he’s f*cking good man. He is damn good. He’s very, very, very good and he showed it. To me the narrative isn’t that Colby lost, the Trump kid lost, the big-mouth kid got his jaw broke.

“And I hate the f*cking #MAGAJaw. Grow up. But the thing to me, the narrative of this is how good is Kamaru Usman? He is so god damn good.”

What do you think about Schaub standing up for Covington against recent criticisms?

UFC welterweight Ben Askren shocked the world when he announced his retirement from the sport earlier this week.

Askren — who was on a two-fight losing streak — revealed he needed hip replacement surgery and after thinking long and hard, decided to call time on his career. It brings an end to a year-long stint with the promotion which involved controversy, humor and a lot of trash talking.

But after his recent setbacks, there was really nothing else left to do for “Funky” according to Brendan Schaub:

“I don’t have a problem with it,” Schaub said on his podcast (via BJ Penn). “It’s like, he came when he was older. He’s what? 35? So it’s like he came late to the game, was in some big fights. I still think the UFC got the most benefit from the trade with ‘Mighty Mouse.’

“You don’t have the legend of [Jorge] Masvidal without Ben Askren. It takes two to tango to become a superstar. Ben helped with that. His sh*t talking, his controversial fight with Robbie Lawler. I get it. Then you lose to Demian Maia, so it’s kind of like what else is he gonna do?”

Askren’s trash talking rubbed many people the wrong way as plenty of fans took pleasure in seeing him lose to Masvidal and Maia. However, Schaub doesn’t understand the hate as he gave Askren credit for testing himself in the UFC:

“I know people wanna sh*t on Ben Askren,” Schaub continued. “I don’t get it. Kudos to him cause he didn’t have to do anything. Kudos for him for giving it a go man. Being like, ‘alright it didn’t work out.’ You beat Robbie Lawler. Obviously super controversial but he still beat Robbie Lawler, a Hall of Famer. So it’s like, alright now we know. Cool man.”

What do you think of Schaub’s comments?
