Former UFC heavyweight contender, Brendan Schaub has been mocked across social media this Saturday afternoon, after footage emerged of him discussing last week’s FIFA World Cup final in Qatar – botching Paris Saint Germain and Brazil forward, Neymar’s name – labelling the star, ‘Needermeyer’.

Schaub, a former heavyweight title challenger under the banner of the UFC, has since turned to standup comedy and podcast hosting since his retirement from professional mixed martial arts back in October 2015.

Boasting a 10-5 professional record, Schaub ended his time in the sport in the midst of a two-fight losing skid against both former champion, Andrei Arlovski, and Travis Browne – the latter via ground strikes TKO.

Brendan Schaub mocked for his FIFA World Cup botch

Discussing this month’s FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and France in Qatar – where Lionel Messi’s Argentina side defeated Kylian Mbappe’s French holders on penalties, Schaub discussed the duo – as well as mentioning PSG teammate, Neymar, whom he labelled “Needermeyer”.

“Mgappe (sic) – Mgappe, is that his name?” Bryan Callen asked. “Mbappe? Whatever his name is, from France – another freak.”

“He won the golden boot,” Brendan Schaub said on his podcast. “You know, Messi, Mbappe, and Needermeyer, are all teammates in Premier League.”

Netting twice in the FIFA World Cup final as well as in the eventual penalty shootout victory, Messi landed his first Coupe du Monde triumph.

For Mbappe, the 2018 tournament victor landed this occasion’s Golden Boot award, and also became just the second player to score a hat trick of goals in a FIFA World Cup final.

As for Brazilian star, Neymar, the former FC Barcelona wideman saw his Brazil side dumped out at the quarter final stage against 2018 finalists, Croatia – with the former missing the opportunity to score from the spot.

Brendan Schaub touts Paddy Pimblett as a future UFC champion: ‘He has the mindset for it’

Paddy PimblettBrendan Schaub believes Paddy Pimblett is a future UFC champion despite a less-than-spectacular showing at UFC 282. ‘The Baddy’ is coming off his fourth straight win inside the Octagon, but it wasn’t without a healthy dose of controversy. Paddy Pimblett

Brendan Schaub believes Paddy Pimblett is a future UFC champion despite a less-than-spectacular showing at UFC 282.

‘The Baddy’ is coming off his fourth straight win inside the Octagon, but it wasn’t without a healthy dose of controversy. Going a full 15 minutes with Jared ‘Flash’ Gordon in the co-main event feature last Saturday, practically everyone on the face of the planet had Gordon scoring the massive upset. The three judges presiding over the bout had a different opinion, awarding Pimblett the victory 29-28 on all scorecards. It was immediately dubbed by many as one of the worst decisions in UFC history.

Speaking on his ‘The Schaub Show’ podcast, former UFC heavyweight competitor Brendan Schaub still believes Paddy Pimblett will be a world champion one day but suggests that the Liverpudlian didn’t deliver his best stuff in his last Octagon appearance.

“His fame [outweighs] his talent. Will he get there? Yes he will,” stated Schaub on his podcast. “If they take the necessary steps, I fully believe that Paddy will be world champion. He has the mindset for it. I also love how people were saying, ‘Paddy isn’t ready for the big show!’, okay. Do your homework on Paddy Pimblett.”

Brendan Schaub Says Paddy Pimblett Got Away From What ‘Made Him Special’ at UFC 282

“He was selling out giant venues in Liverpool on his own in Cage Warriors before he got to the UFC. So, that doesn’t work, the kid shows up when the pressure is on. The Paddy Pimblett [vs.] Jared Gordon fight was more of a factor of how damn good Jared Gordon is. Paddy Pimblett when he faced an adversary in Jared Gordon who is very skilled, Paddy got away from what made Paddy special. He stopped doing the unconventional stuff, he went back to just striking. He would do some grappling but really he got into a striking battle, and Paddy on the feet isn’t special.”

Between his out-of-left-field feud with renowned MMA journalist Ariel Helwani and telling Joe Rogan his fight with Jared Gordon “wasn’t close,” Paddy Pimblett has done himself no favors when it comes to staying in the good graces of MMA fans. In the end, Schaub believes ‘The Baddy’ simply needs to stick to what makes him unique inside the Octagon. Over time, fans will come around and Pimblett will continue to flourish.

“Paddy being unconventional and being hard to train for is what makes Paddy special. So he got away from that against Jared Gordon because Jared Gordon is that damn good. Kudos to Jared Gordon, and it was a close fight” (h/t BJPenn.com)

Brendan Schaub on Joe Rogan’s “sanctioned cheating” comments surrounding Alex Pereira’s weight cutting: “I wouldn’t call it cheating”

Brendan SchaubBrendan Schaub doesn’t support Joe Rogan’s claim that Alex Pereira’s drastic weight-cutting is “sanctioned cheating”.  On The Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan spoke to Steve-O about Pereira’s revelation that he was 220 pounds on fight day. Brendan Schaub doesn’t support Joe Rogan’s claim that Alex Pereira’s drastic weight-cutting is “sanctioned cheating”.

On The Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan spoke to Steve-O about Pereira’s revelation that he was 220 pounds on fight day. That is a 35-pound gain in weight between weigh-ins and fight night.

He could have been, yeah,” Rogan said. “He certainly gets above that between fights and he has a hard time making 185. It’s a bull***t thing. It’s basically sanctioned cheating. It really is, but everybody does it.” (h/t MMAMania

Rogan believes constant weight-cutting can lead to problems for Pereira. He says his big size difference compared to other middleweights can actually hinder his abilities inside the octagon.

He’s so big for the weight class, which really wears you out, that weight cut,” Rogan said “It’s a big weight cut and with wrestling, he’s going to have issues because he’s not a grappler. That’s not his forte. He’s getting better at grappling, but when [Israel Adesanya] takes you to the ground and…controls you, that’s not his forte either.”

At UFC 281, Israel Adesanya, who is known as an elite striker, showcased his wrestling against Pereira. He secured the first takedown in his UFC career and had more control time compared to his opponent.

Brendan Schaub Doesn’t Agree With Joe Rogan

On his podcast, Schaub spoke about Rogan’s comments. He disagrees with the long-time UFC commentator and believes Pereira’s weight difference can actually give him an upper hand in a five-round fight.”

It can be an advantage. Especially if you’re good at it,” Schaub said. “I wouldn’t call it cheating. They literally weighed the same on the scale, and then he balloons back up. That’s what makes Pereira kind of special. He can cut that weight and still have cardio for five rounds.”

Pereira defeated long-time rival Adesanya for the middleweight title. It seemed that Adesanya was going to win until the final round. In comeback fashion, Pereira pressured the former champion against the fence and threw vicious combinations to end the fight. The comeback victory was similar to their 2017 kickboxing match. Pereira now has an MMA and two kickboxing victories over Adesanya.
