And Now He’s Fired and Nobody is Complaining…Brett Rogers

(“What do you mean this is the judge and jury?)

Well, it didn’t take long for the other shoe to drop for Brett Rogers.

Hours after being arrested on multiple felonious domestic assault-related charges, former tire-changer Brett Rogers may have to go back to Sam’s Club to beg for his job back after he gets out of jail as Zuffa has terminated his Strikeforce contract.

According to MMAJunkie, UFC president Dana White announced the firing following today’s UFC 132 press conference. Usually when charges like this are laid, we wait to pass judgment until the facts of the case come out, but considering the fact that Rogers kids have told police that he hit them as well and that they witnessed the entire assault on their mother, knowing that young children rarely lie to authority figures to GET their parents into trouble, the case seems pretty cut and dry.

Good on the UFC for cutting him loose. The promotion’s zero tolerance stance on domestic violence should be applauded.

While in school for Public Relations,  I devised a mock nation-wide campaign to be instituted by Zuffa in which fighters would make TV, radio and public service announcements in the vein of the “Got Milk” campaign, speaking out against bullying and domestic violence. Maybe now is the time to start such an initiative.

In the meantime, maybe they can put “The Grim Wife Beater” in a cell with War Machine for a few hours wearing a straight jacket so he can get his just desserts.

The Zuffa-owned Strikeforce promotion has decided to part ways with former heavyweight title contender after his arrest Wednesday for felony-degree assault on his wife. He was also charged with a gross misdemeanor for child endangerment.

According to MMAJunkie, the release was confirmed by UFC President Dana White immediately following the UFC 132 press conference this afternoon. He noted that the release came immediately after the arrest in Apple Valley, MN.

Rogers last competed for the promotion less than two weeks ago, losing his quarterfinals match in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix tournament to veteran Josh Barnett. He had dropped three straight fights for the promotion, which is often the kiss of death for a Zuffa fighter.

The police report indicated that Rogers had both strangled and repeatedly punched his wife in front of their two young girls. He admitted that he had been drinking earlier in the evening.

Rogers’ bail has been set at $100,000 during a hearing Wednesday and his next hearing has been scheduled for Friday at 11:00 a.m. CT.

Brett Charles Rogers, 30, has been charged with assault in the third degree, domestic assault by strangulation and pattern of stalking conduct — all felonies — in Dakota County. He was also charged with endangerment of a child, a gross misdameanor.

His wife blacked out from being choked, suffered a golf ball sized wound on her face among smaller wounds. The couple’s daughter had tried to intervene after she saw Rogers strike her mother.

Rogers admits he had been drinking before an argument broke out with he and his wife. He claims she punched him and he returned force.

The local fighter made his first court appearance Thursday. Bail was set at $100,00 with conditions. He is again expected in court Friday at 11 a.m.

Update: For more disturbing details, you can read the full criminal complaint here. Most notably, Rogers’s two daughters reported that he had struck and choked them within the last two years. Also, after the alleged assault, “T.R. [Brett’s wife, Tiuana Rogers] was located by other officers walking by a nearby school. T.R. had obvious signs of injury on her face, including a golf ball size bump above her left eyebrow, a bump on her right eyebrow, and one in the middle of her forehead, injuries to her ears and jaw, along with blood on her face and a missing tooth. She also had injuries to her neck and back. T.R. repeatedly denied that she had been assaulted and said she had simply fallen on the ground.” After she was released from the hospital that afternoon, she refused to meet with an investigating officer, and “told him that the assault was her fault.” Tight ship you’re running there, Brett.

Tough-to-read news from the world of mixed martial arts today, as Minnesota fighter Brett Rogers is facing several charges of domestic assault after police say he violently attacked his wife Wednesday.

Rogers, 30, has been charged with third-degree assault, domestic assault by strangulation, a pattern of stalking conduct, all felonies. He was also charged with the endangerment of a child.

Official police reports indicate that officers were dispatched to the Rogers home in Apple Valley, Minn. at approximately 12:35 a.m. on Wednesday evening, when a caller reported hearing yelling, a female screaming and glass being broken from a neighbor’s home.

Rogers stated to police that he had argued with his wife and that she hit him during the argument, so he hit her back. Rogers had no visible injuries on his body. The report also adds that his breath smelled of alcohol and that he admitted to consuming alcohol that evening.

A neighbor reported that he had looked out his window and saw Rogers standing over his wife, repeatedly punching her in the head and face as she lay on the ground. Another neighbor stated that he saw her with blood “streaming from her face and mouth” with what looked to be a missing tooth.

Rogers’ nine-year-old daughter saw the incident unfold and yelled at her father to stop. Rogers’ 10-year-old daughter was also present and witnessed the attack, admitting that she had seen her father strike her mother in the past. She also reported that her father had struck the children within the last two years.

Rogers’ wife, T.R., was located by officers walking by a nearby school with injuries on her face that included a golf ball-sized bump above her left eyebrow, injuries to her ears and jaw, a missing tooth and numerous wounds to her neck and back.

She repeatedly denied that she was assaulted and said that she had simply fallen on the ground.

Paramedics were called immediately due to what were described as serious injuries to her head. She was transported to a nearby hospital and released the following afternoon.

Both children told a neighbor whom they had been staying with that they were afraid to go home and that their father had “choked” them in the past.

An officer attempted to speak with T.R. on Thursday, but she refused, telling him that the assault was her fault.

Rogers made his first court appearance on Thursday. His bail was set in the amount of $100,000, with conditions. His next court appearance is July 1.

Update:

According to UFC President Dana White, Brett Rogers has been released of his Strikeforce contract immediately.

Brett RogersRecent Strikeforce Heavyweight GP entrant Brett Rogers was arrested and jailed Wednesday for allegedly assaulting his wife and has since been released from Strikeforce.

According to FOX 9 News in Minnesota, Rogers and his wife had a domestic argument that escalated into Rogers allegedly punching his wife in her head repeatedly as well as choking her unconscious. Rogers is claiming his wife punched him and he retaliated.

Away from the hand of justice, consequences were swift for Rogers. On Thursday afternoon, UFC president Dana White, a co-owner of Strikeforce parent company Zuffa LLC, confirmed that he has been “cut immediately” from his contract.

Rogers has been charged with three felonies – assault in the third degree, domestic assault by strangulation and pattern of stalking conduct. Rogers was also charged with the misdemeanor endangerment of a child since his daughter was around and tried to intervene during the altercation.

Bail was set at $100,000 and Rogers made a court appearance Thursday with a second one slated for Friday.

Rogers, 30, is best known for his 22-second knockout upset over Andrei Arlovski that earned him a shot at Fedor Emelianenko months later at a Strikeforce event in November 2009. The victory over Arlovski improved Rogers’ record to 10-0, but would turn out to be his last significant win. After the loss to Fedor, Rogers fell to Alistair Overeem via TKO, picked up an unimpressive decision win in a tune-up over Reuben Villareal and most recently, lost to Josh Barnett via submission in the opening round of the Strikeforce Heavyweight GP.

Werdum Says Overeem Didn’t Beat Him, He Beat Himself

(Clash of styles = boring fight)

Fabricio Werdum has finally responded to Alistair Overeem’s claims that he should be ashamed of his performance on Saturday night in their Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix quarterfinal match-up. According to Vai Cavalo, Overeem didn’t beat him; he lost the bout on his own by not listening to his corner and instead attempting time and time again to coax “The Demolition Man” into his guard.

“I don’t believe he won, I lost to myself. I could’ve won. The feeling I’m having now is worse than if he has smashed me up and if he was way better than me on the three rounds, winning with a large advantage,” he told TATAME today. “The guys is good, alright, so I’d have to keep my head down and train more. But it wasn’t like that and that made me choked. It was a [mediocre] bout, the fans expected much more, but he didn’t want to the ground at any cost.”

Werdum says that one thing he did succeed in doing was throwing Overeem off of his usually dominant striking game.

“You can see that end of the second and third round, when we went to the ground, on the half guard, he just laid there, he didn’t punch me at all, which is what he always does… He didn’t do it, he just held me. But many things happened,” he said. “But me, in particular, wasn’t ok. I trained a lot, I did wrestling trainings, muay thai trainings… I did everything I was supposed to do. But, the way I see it, I have to put much more effort for my next bout so I get stronger, really strong because it makes much difference.”

Pointing out that Overeem was able to use his strength advantage to dump him on his back and to break the clinch, Werdum says that the power disparity was the difference in the fight. He feels that if he had a few more seconds, he could have made The Reem tap out.

“And he used much strength just to hold me there. He followed his game plan and I made a mistake because I didn’t do what we have planned for me to do. When I pulled him to my guard, on the end of the third round, I almost applied a leglock, which was something we trained a lot: pulling him to my guard and grabbing his leg,” he explained.I” did it on the end of the fight, but it wasn’t the right moment. I had the chance to do that before, but it was too late for me to do anything, there were only 10 seconds left, and I couldn’t do anything more.”

A knee injury in the second round Fabricio says may have prompted him to try to pull guard more than planned, but he says that he was put off that Overeem didn’t want to engage with him on the ground.

“I don’t know if the guys really noticed me, but on the second round Overeem got my leg and tried to take me down. Since my leg was stuck on the floor, my left leg, my knee was dislocated. A MMA bout is not only about striking. When I call the guys to fight on the floor, nobody comes. When the guys want to fight me while standing up, I’d go, I’d stand up and try to launch how many shots I could,” Werdum pointed out. “I was doing fine striking, but I paid a high price for not listening to my coach, because that was not my game plan. To call him into my guard, I could do that like one, alright… But, the way I did, it made me tired. Calling him to my guard and standing… Keep doing that over and over again got me really tired.”

Although he didn’t win the bout, Werdum says the fact that he was never really in trouble against a dangerous striker like Overeem was a bit of a moral victory and that he would like a rubbermatch if and when Antonio Silva beats him. As far as who he is fighting next, he believes that it will be against either Andrei Arlovski or Brett Rogers on the same card as the SFHWGP semi-finals.

“Overeem said he’d knock me out and I didn’t see it coming at all. I wasn’t in danger fighting Overeem, he didn’t knock me down… I wasn’t hit by any strong shots, that could almost lead me to a knockout. He never came for me as he always does. There’s a long time since Overeem has been winning his bouts on the first round, on the first minute, right? It’s been a while… And against me he didn’t do it, he didn’t come for it, he didn’t work his ground and pound,” he explained. “I intend to fight on this next phase of the GP, not on the GP, but on the same event, against Arlovski or Brett Rogers, who have also lost. I guess it’d be a good thing for me to fight on this event because I felt I needed to fight more, I stayed without fighting for too long. I was a year off, and that’s a lot of time. I lost the rhythm… I was doing good on the training, but fighting is different. On the day of the bout it’s different.”

“In my opinion, Big Foot will defeat Overeem,. And I guess it’ll be striking. If Big Foot goes like he went went he was with Arlovski, he’ll defeat Overeem. I’d fight on the same event that they would, I don’t know against who, but in case Overeem loses, on the next event we could have a rematch worth the belt, because after this bout we’re even,” he said. “I won one, and he won the other, so we have to do this third match and check it all out. It’s 1×1, so we have to do this bout, because it’s not convincing anyone: not even for him because I made the first move all times, and neither for me because I lost it. ”
