Featherweight number one contender Brian Ortega has admitted that weight cutting played a role in the decision to shave off his luscious locks ahead of UFC Fight Island 6.

Ortega shocked all in attendance and those watching at home when he arrived at weigh-ins on Friday sporting a completely bald head. ‘T-City’ who is known for his famously long hair revealed shortly afterward that he would be donating his hair to the Locks of Love charity for children undergoing chemotherapy.

The new style certainly suited Ortega when it came to fight night. He dominated ‘The Korean Zombie’ over five rounds, dropping his tough opponent twice on route to a unanimous decision victory which earned him a shot at UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski.

Speaking at the UFC Fight Island 6 post-fight press conference Ortega revealed he is planning to grow his hair back out, he said.

“I’m growing my hair back. My hair is growing back. I can’t stay bald, brother.”

Ortega went on to explain that his decision to shave his head was partly due to the fact he was struggling with weight cutting while simultaneously thinking about people who lose weight due to chemotherapy, he said.

“We’re cutting weight and I’ve been waiting to cut my hair for a while – not completely bald, but at least trim a little bit and go back to the slick-back Brian or something. I now understand why some of these girls cut their hair off, man. After every round, I have to re-bundle it and put it up and this and that, and showering, and that and – it’s just a frickin’ hassle.

“I do miss my looks with it, I’m not going to lie. My looks, I miss them. But I was cutting weight and I was like, ‘Bro, I feel like (expletive) and there’s some people that are going through some things right now.’ I’ve visited countless children hospitals and met a lot of kids who are sick with cancer right now. The stories that I saw will always stay with me. Walking in rooms playing tough, making them smile, and then walking out and crying your tears out because you know these stories.

“I was suffering during the weight cut and I haven’t had a weight cut in two years. So while I was suffering, I was like, ‘Man, I have to deal with this for a little bit. Some people don’t have that choice. They have to deal with it every day.’ I was talking about it while cutting weight and I was like, ‘Man, I don’t know how people lose weight and go through all these therapies.’ Maybe I was in my feelings and I got emotional while cutting weight, but I was like, ‘Go get me the clippers right now. Get me the frickin’ clippers right now.’ And they were like, ‘No, relax, Brian. Relax.’ I had to fight my homies. I was like, ‘Get me the (expletive) clippers right now,’ and I just went for it. Just went straight for it. And I was like, ‘We’re going to donate this. That’s it. It’s done.’” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

'The Korean Zombie'

Top featherweight contender Chan Sung Jung AKA ‘The Korean Zombie’ has addressed his loss to Brian Ortega in the UFC Fight Island 6 main event for the first time.

‘The Korean Zombie’ was a considerable favourite heading into his fight against ‘T-City’ who had taken almost two years off since suffering a brutal beating at the hands of former featherweight champion Max Holloway.

On the night things were much different than anticipated. Ortega looked vastly improved from the last time we saw him in action. He was patient with his striking offence and well versed in the art of defence. Ortega mixed in his boxing with a wrestling threat to keep ‘TKZ’ guessing in each of the five rounds.

Ortega scored two knockdowns and enjoyed several highlight moments in the fight. He was unable to find the finish, but it was clear he had won even before the judges rendered their unanimous decision.

‘The Korean Zombie’ looked a far cry from what MMA fans have come to expect. He was somewhat shot shy. Often in range but unable to pull the trigger and when he did unable to find the target a lot of the time.

After the fight Jung took to social media to express his thoughts about the fight, he wrote.

“I don’t remember round 3,4,5 I don’t remember, but it’s so amazing to see you fighting.. haha.. I have to find out why I lost when I lose the game.. the opponent was too high, south I was supposed to attract my opponent when I was in the middle of the day.. but I’m just a fool who hit such a elbow. Ortega did so well.. and it’s just that I’m so ashamed of myself right now. Thank you for your support though. Sorry.” (Translated from Korean)

Brian Ortega believes he and Max Holloway will fight again in the future.

Ortega returned to the win column with an impressive unanimous decision victory over The Korean Zombie in the UFC Fight Island 6 headliner on Saturday night. Despite being the underdog and seemingly having the striking disadvantage, Ortega won every round and even dropped Zombie in a fight that was largely contested on the feet.

It was all the more impressive considering this was Ortega’s first fight since his brutal fourth-round TKO beating at the hands of Holloway back in December 2018.

And while he is now virtually guaranteed the next shot at the featherweight title against Alexander Volkanovski, Ortega believes he will eventually cross paths with Holloway.

“I said this in the beginning — we will meet again,” Ortega said at the post-fight press conference. “He’s [Hollowaay] going to stay at the top. He’s not a guy who is just going to drop right off the bat and spiral down his career. I’m not a guy who is going to fall off like that. Clearly tonight I showed the world that’s not me.

“He’s going to stay at the top, I’m going be at the top, Volkanovski’s going to be at the top and believe me, we’re going to have some rounds with all of us. We’re gonna keep you guys entertained.”

Holloway, of course, is on a two-fight losing streak having lost his title to Volkanovski before losing their rematch at UFC 251 in July.

Despite many believing he did enough to win the rematch, it is highly unlikely “Blessed” gets another title shot anytime soon. Things could change if Ortega were to become featherweight champion, however.

How do you see a rematch going between Holloway and Ortega after the latter’s performance?
