UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar returned to the Octagon Saturday night after a year off and won a tremendous fight against Shane Carwin at UFC 116, withstanding terrible punishment in the first round to come back and choke Carwin out in the second.

“I stand before you a humble champion,” Lesnar said afterward. “And I’m still the toughest S.O.B. around.”

Unbelieveable.

After finishing 10th out of over 2500 competitors in last week’s World Series of Poker, UFC fighter Mike Swick must be feeling pretty lucky. Either that, or he was not intimidated by my 0-3 record in Writer vs. Fighter and saw a chance for an easy victory. Whatever the reason, Swick was gracious enough to agree to face me in a UFC 116 prediction contest this afternoon, and for that I thank him.

I may have gotten smoked by “Babalu” Sobral in last week’s match-up, but I’m trying to stay positive. I figure it can only help me that I got Swick to make his predictions after he’d stayed up until 5 a.m. playing poker in Las Vegas, where he says he’s been doing “very well.”

Well Mr. Swick, prepare to have your fortunes changed. Maybe. Hopefully.

62 Percent of Pros Agree that Carwin Beats Lesnar Tonight

(“And, presto! The dove vanishes before your very eyes. Now, if I may have a volunteer from the audience, I will amaze you with a trick learned during my extensive travels in the orient …” PicProps: Sherdog.)

There are two ways to look at this: Either the extensive knowledge gleaned from their years of training and competing in mixed martial arts leads a majority of professional fighters to believe Shane Carwin will defeat Brock Lesnar tonight at UFC 116 … or Lesnar’s peers are even more sick of this a-hole than we are and they don’t care who knows it.

Either way, a kind of astonishing 62 percent of pros surveyed by Sherdog.com for its recurring “Pros Pick” piece on Saturday tabbed Carwin to unseat Lesnar, despite the fact he remains a slight betting underdog. Judging from the voter turnout – 61 athletes participated in the super-scientific polling process – The Dog didn’t have to try too hard to get the pros to come out of their shells and voice their opinions, either.

For example, the ever diplomatic Seth Petruzelli weighed-in thusly : “Please, Shane, smash that overgrown non-veggie eating poop stick.”

We assume he meant Lesnar.

There are lots of fun things you can bet on over the internet. Which celebrity will enter rehab next (John Stamos is a surprising favorite), who will be tabbed as Larry King’s replacement on CNN (you can get 7-2 odds on Ryan Seacrest), and which celebrity couple will divorce next (smart money’s on Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise).

But who needs celebrity tragedy when we have the human drama of MMA? Any fool can see that Lindsay Lohan has better odds of getting a DUI than Mary-Kate Olsen. It takes real insight to pick between two monsters like Shane Carwin and Brock Lesnar.

With UFC 116 just a few hours away, let’s take a look at what online oddsmakers think of the action and see if we can’t spot a decent underdog pick or two.
