Brock Lesnar is one of the biggest stars in UFC history but the former heavyweight champion has never been an avid watcher of MMA.

Lesnar, a native of South Dakota competed as a professional mixed martial artist on nine separate occasions – eight of which came under the UFC banner.

The current WWE superstar most recently made the walk in a surprise return to the sport at UFC 200 in July 2016, battling to a decision win over Mark Hunt, a result that has since been overturned to a no-contest.

During a recent appearance on The Michael Kay Show, Lesnar explained that he very rarely watches TV and when he does it’s to catch big NFL or UFC events.

“I’m not a huge TV guy,” Lesnar said. “Never have been. Honestly, I haven’t. I tuned into the Super Bowl, didn’t catch the halftime show, but I did go back and watch it, I watched it on YouTube. But I never, like I don’t watch the UFC. Even when I was competing, I would go back and watch some of my film, but I never, you know, sat down and (watched). I can’t honestly say, maybe I’ve rented a half a dozen Pay-Per-Views.” (Transcribed by Wrestlinginc.com)

Brock Lesnar Recently Closed The Door On His MMA Career

Lesnar has often been linked to a UFC return but that part of his life is over. The 43-year-old officially closed the door on his MMA career during a recent interview with The New York Post.

“That door is closed,” Brock Lesnar said. “You know what, Dana White, the Fertitta brothers (Frank and Lorenzo) were exceptional to me. I’m too old. That’s a young man’s sport, and that door is closed. I’m Brock Lesnar, the WWE Superstar.”

Lesnar, a native of South Dakota competed as a professional mixed martial artist on nine separate occasions – eight of which came under the banner of the UFC.

The former undisputed champion most recently made the walk in a surprise return to the sport at UFC 200 in July 2016, battling to an eventual official ‘No Contest’ against promotional alum, Mark Hunt.

Following the bout, which was originally awarded to Lesnar courtesy of a unanimous decision win, the former titleholder tested positive for the banned substance, clomiphene, resulting in a suspension from anti-doping agency, USADA and a fine from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Ending his career with a 5-3(1) professional record, Lesnar was briefly linked with a return to the Octagon in a heavyweight title offing against former two-weight champion, Daniel Cormier back in 2018, however, a bout failed to ever materialize.

Lesnar was also subject of a notable call out from former two-time light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones ahead of a potential heavyweight division move, however, a bout also failed to hit paper – as did a move to Bellator to fight sport icon, Fedor Emelianenko.

Ahead of his headlining appearance at Wrestlemania 38 in April, Lesnar confirmed during an interview with The New York Post that he would not be making a return to professional mixed martial arts in the future, claiming that his age would not permit a comeback.

“That door is closed,” Brock Lesnar said of a return to mixed martial arts. “You know what, Dana White, the Fertitta brothers (Frank and Lorenzo) were exceptional to me. I’m too old. That’s a young man’s sport, and that door is closed. I’m Brock Lesnar, the WWE Superstar.”

Making his professional mixed martial arts debut back in June 2007 with a victory over Min-Soo Kim, Lesnar then debuted in the UFC with a kneebar loss to Frank Mir, before embarking on a four-fight winning run, lodging wins over Heath Herring, and then-champion, Randy Couture – before stopping both Mir, and then-interim champion, Shane Carwin to defend his heavyweight title and unify the championships, respectively.

UFC President Dana White gave former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar his own makeshift Octagon to get ready for his MMA transition.

Lesnar last fought in MMA at UFC 200, earning a decision win over Mark Hunt that was later overturned to a no-contest. This was after Lesnar tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in a pre-fight test.

But Lesnar’s MMA career included arguably the best start in the sport’s history. After a professional debut win against Min Soo Kim in K-1 Hero’s, he would win four of his first five fights in the UFC including his heavyweight title win over Randy Couture at UFC 91.

Lesnar would go on to defend the title against Frank Mir and Shane Carwin before losing it to Cain Velasquez.

Lesnar made his transition to MMA after a long tenure in professional wrestling. He continues to be a massive star in the WWE, and it wasn’t an easy move to MMA for him.

During a recent interview on The Pat McAfee Show, Lesnar told a story about the lengths he went to become physically and mentally ready for his UFC debut.

“Like when you go through the door… I built or ordered an Octagon so I could, didn’t have at first, like, jitters of getting in an Octagon,” Lesnar admitted. “I’m like, ‘Dana, I want an Octagon’ and like, ah boom, [the UFC] shipped an Octagon. So I can fight in it and practice in it, you know? But then you’re in front of 20,000 people and they shut the door and it’s like, ‘Ahhh’.”

While Lesnar has alluded to his cordial relationship with White, he has admitted that he feels he should’ve been compensated more for his efforts. This comes amidst current UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou’s call for a better pay structure for fighters.

Lesnar continues to be a prominent figure in the WWE and can be seen competing in the promotion’s Monday Night Raw shows, among others.

One reason why Lesnar is such a big star in WWE is his ability to stay consistent between his character in the ring, and his real-life personality outside of it.

Lesnar demonstrated this when he ran into the Jackass crew at a restaurant in St. Louis, MO. During a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Lesnar explained how things played out.

“My buddy goes, ‘The Jackass crew is out there.’… So, I sent the waiter out and sent over a nice bottle of wine,” Lesnar said. “So then next thing I know, Knoxville comes into the back room. He breaks my f**king door down. He broke the door on the private room. So, I come walking out, and in the midst of all this, (the other Jackass guys) were setting themselves on fire out in the restaurant. I didn’t know that at the time. So, I’m going home. I’m going to bed. I’m walking out, and Wee Man stands up and peacocks me a little bit. I just picked him up and said, ‘I’m gonna put you down right there.’ None of it was promo. Lesnar, who ended his professional mixed martial arts career boasting a 5-3(1) record, most recently featured in a main card bout against fellow promotional alum, Mark Hunt at UFC 200 in July 2016.

The former undisputed champion has initially secured a rather one-sided unanimous decision win over Hunt, until the bout was eventually overturned to an official ‘No Contest’ after Lesnar failed a post-fight drug test administered by anti-doping agency USADA after testing positive for the banned substance, clomiphene in an in-competition drug test sample. Lesnar was fined a sum of $250,00 for his infringement, and issued a one-year retroactive suspension from active competition.

Despite a return to Vince McMahon’s professional wrestling outfit, WWE, Lesnar was linked, albeit briefly to an Octagon return to challenge then-heavyweight champion, former two-weight titleholder, Daniel Cormier in a title bout in 2018.

In the time since, the bout failed to ever materialize, however, Lesnar has continually been linked to a clash against former two-time light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, who called out the former heavyweight champion, as well as a potential Bellator MMA signing to meet with sport icon, Fedor Emelianenko.

Competing for the UFC in all but one of his nine professional mixed martial arts walks, Lesnar, who recently competed at the WWE’s flagship event, Royal Rumble, claimed he had ordered the UFC to send him an Octagon to train in to prepare of his UFC debut, as well as claiming that a person would have to be “batsh*t crazy” to compete in MMA.

“It’s a different game, you know, entering the Octagon,” Brock Lesnar said on The Pat McAfee Show. “And I’m telling you, you’ve got to be – like, you’ve got to be half batsh*t crazy. A former undisputed heavyweight champion with the UFC, Brock Lesnar managed to clinch the title with a 2008 knockout win over Randy Couture, before defending the title against two-time foe, Frank Mir, and then unifying the titles against Shane Carwin.

Dropping the championship in 2010, Lesnar suffered a first round ground strikes loss to Cain Velasquez, before suffering a first round knockout loss to Alistair Overeem in December of the following year.

After just one professional fight Lesnar was signed to the UFC but would lose his debut to UFC veteran Frank Mir.

“I was so mad at myself,” Lesnar told The Pat McAfee Show about his first loss. “It just built another thing that the people ram down your throat and say you can’t do something. Love those people. Love them. I get goosebumps for that”.

But after Brock Lesnar’s initial hiccup in the promotion, he would then bounce back.

“I had a one-fight deal [with the UFC], and I was like, ‘Please give me another shot at this.’ Boom, then it took off. I fought Heath Herring and then I got Randy Couture and won the belt.”

Brock would go on to become a pay-per-view star in the early stages of the UFC.

“Dana’s all right,” Lesnar said when addressing his relationship with the UFC president. “I’ve got a lot of money from him. I probably should have got paid more, maybe.”

However, the World Wrestling Entertainment superstar famously had a difficult relationship with current CEO Vince McMahon.

“I really can’t compare the two guys,” Lesnar said. “Honestly, my relationship with Vince is so different than it is with Dana over the years. Vince and I have had a love-hate relationship for the last 20 years, but it’s been good. We have a lot of water under the bridge. I have a lot of respect for both.

“But dealing with Dana, it’s just a totally different business approach. I met Vince when I was younger. I look at Vince more as a father figure actually. Because I’ve learned a lot of things from him, and I was able to carry those things over and handle business with Dana. Vince is a self-made person, so is Dana.
