Following in the footsteps of Anderson Silva, Marcos Souza, and Magomed Malikov, a New Mexico-based bantamweight named Adrian “Killa” Cruz shattered his leg during a fight at RFA 18 on Friday night. As usual, it happened while Cruz was throwing a leg kick, which was checked by his opponent Justin Mitchell Linn. And while Cruz’s fracture ranks relatively low on the gnarliness scale, it’s kind of insane that this is at least the fourth time this has happened in the last nine months. Drink your milk, people.

Proving that the MMA shin-break bug can strike at any time, Russian heavyweight Magomed Malikov snapped his leg earlier today while kicking Brett “Da Grim” Rogers at Fight Nights: Battle of Moscow 16. Rogers didn’t even check the kick, Destruction-style — Malikov’s leg just kind of fell apart on impact. Horrible. Anyway, good night everybody!

Whether or not Anderson Silvashould continue fighting after his gruesome leg-break on Saturday is up for debate. But theoretically, Silva could be back in action by the summer if he wanted to. That’s according to the UFC’s official statement on his injury, which was posted on UFC.com yesterday:
“Following Saturday evening’s UFC 168 main event, former champion Anderson Silva was taken to a local Las Vegas hospital where he underwent surgery to repair a broken left leg. The successful surgery, performed by Dr. Steven Sanders, the UFC’s orthopedic surgeon, inserted an intramedullary rod into Anderson’s left tibia. The broken fibula was stabilized and does not require a separate surgery. Anderson will remain in the hospital for a short while, but no additional surgery is scheduled at this time. Recovery time for such injuries may vary between three and six months.”
A short time later, Silva posted a short message on his Instagram account saying “I want to thank all my fans and friends for their support and caring messages, I’m fine now and I need to be with my family, a good rest with my children and wife will help me in recovery. Thanks Brazil.”
Maybe the saddest part of all this is that Silva’s hero and potential boxing opponent Roy Jones Jr. now wants to box Nick Diaz since Anderson is out of commission. Come on, Roy…that’s not how we treat a homey.
After the jump: An old but very relevant video from Bas Rutten that explains how to avoid breaking your shin when throwing a leg kick. Plus: Ronda Rousey and her crew react to Silva’s leg-break backstage.

(Oh, just rub some dirt on it, you fairy. We’re sure you’ll be fine.)
If this .gif from last weekend’s WOCS 24 bout between Magno Alexandre and Gustavo Franca proved anything, it’s that you don’t need to possess a freakish, 6’4″ lightweight frame like Corey Hill to have your leg snapped like a toothpick in an MMA fight. During the first round of a main card featherweight contest, Franca — like Hill before him — threw a low leg kick that was effortlessly checked by Alexandre. Which would have be fine…had Franca not taken a sworn oath against calcium in the 5th grade.
Franca’s leg proceeded to disintegrate beneath him, and I proceeded to regurgitate the contents of my breakfast all over myself. Thankfully, I usually start the day with a fifth of Elijah Craig (aged 18 years) and some York Peppermint Patties, the combination of which tastes just as good going down the second time in puree form.
So, Potato Nation, great lawn chair knockout or GREATEST lawn chair knockout?

Snapping the honor away from Tate (pun intended) was Bryan Jones Jr. who had his leg snapped by a slam executed by opponent Justin Lee Fowler at CageQuest 1 on Saturday. Even better than the first video of the injury below is the crowd’s reaction from the second one.

Just so we don’t leave you wanting more, here’s a gif of Rousey’s armbar on Tate, which shockingly didn’t inflict any broken bones. According to Miesha, there is likely some ligament damage, which is sometimes more of a bitch to repair.
