Cain Velasquez looks to be set to return to the Octagon as a huge opportunity presented itself on Friday.

With Ben Rothwell out of his scheduled matchup with Fabricio Werdum, sources say that Velasquez will replace “Big Ben” at either UFC 211 or 212, ESPN reports.

Rothwell was flagged for a failed drug screening by USADA, forcing the UFC to pull “Big Ben” from the card. Werdum’s manager, Ali Abdel Aziz, confirmed to ESPN that Werdum will be taking on former foe Cain Velasquez, who he defeated back at UFC 188 by submission.

Velasquez rebounded from that loss after brutalizing Travis “Hapa” Browne in the first round at UFC 200.

Cain’s coach at American Kickboxing Academy had recently gone on record to say that Velasquez has not been training much lately, since the former heavyweight champion endured an injury leading into a scheduled rematch with Werdum back at UFC 207 in December.

Werdum himself lost the heavyweight title he had wrested from Velasquez after suffering a first round knockout loss at the hands of current champ Stipe Miocic in May. The Brazilian got back on track with a win over Browne at UFC 203 and is now looking to make his way back into title contention.

A win for either man would put them in line for a shot at Miocic’s belt.

UFC 211 takes place in May 2017 and will be headlined by Miocic vs. dos Santos II, while UFC 212 takes place in June and will feature a featherweight title fight between Jose Aldo and Max Holloway.

It seems that everyone is throwing their name into the hat to fight Stipe Miocic for the interim heavyweight title at UFC 196.

As noted, Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum were scheduled to fight for the title at the event, but Velasquez pulled out of the fight on Sunday. Then, the UFC announced that Miocic would fight Werdum for the title at the event. On Monday, the UFC’s plan blew up when Werdum pulled out of the fight with injuries as well.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is one of those names that is interested in fighting Miocic at UFC 196. He told a fan on Twitter that if the title is on the line, then he would fight at the event.

If it was for the actual title I would totally do it.”

The possibility of Jones fighting at the event is slim as he is rumored to fight Daniel Cormier for the UFC light heavyweight title sometime in 2016. Jones is in great shape right now, but it’s hard to believe that the UFC would give up the opportunity to do a rematch with Jones and Cormier that would surely do big business.

UFC 196 takes place on Saturday, February 6th, 2016 from Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Grand Garden Arena with the main card airing on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET and the prelims airing on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and UFC Fight Pass at 6 p.m. ET.
