Featherweight contenders Calvin Kattar and Dan Ige will square off in the UFC on ESPN 13 main event this evening (July 15). The winner will move one step closer to a shot at 145lb champion, Alexander Volkanovski. Who will that be? Let’s find out what the LowKickMMA staff think.

Jordan Ellis: I’m backing Calving Kattar big time in this fight. I feel like he has beaten the better guys in more impressive fashion and has all it takes to be a potential title contender. Dan Ige on the other hand has struggled with recent steps up in competition and in my mind lost his last fight against Edson Barbosa. Ige is tough and game but I expect him to be outclassed and stopped tonight.

Prediction: Calvin Kattar

Ryan Galloway: The main event at this fight night between Calvin Kattar and Dan Ige is a very important match in the featherweight division. The winner of this will be back into title contention while the loser will have a ways to climb. In this matchup I favour Kattar as I think he is the better striker and has extremely heavy hands. If this fight goes into the later rounds maybe Ige can take him down and find a submission but I don’t really see it lasting that long.

Prediction: Calvin Kattar

Ryan Jarrell: I am really excited for this main event featherweight matchup between Kattar and Ige. As crazy as it may sound I think both of these guys are a little overlooked in this division and because of this a win here is important to keep the momentum rolling for each fighter. Ige is extremely durable and good everywhere the fight goes. However, I don’t think that’s going to be enough when it comes to Kattar’s elite level boxing. If Calvin can keep this fight where he wants it, and I see no reason why he cannot, I envision a stoppage after wearing down Ige and taking a little time to figure his style out. I have Calvin Kattar via round 3 TKO.

Prediction: Calvin Kattar

The UFC has finally revealed the full event lineup for it’s July 15th card on “Fight Island”.

The card is to be headlined by ranked featherweights Calvin Kattar and Dan Ige. The two will face off with Ige looking to climb the rankings and make his way into the top 10 while Kattar is aiming to prove he deserves to be in title contention.

Coming off his recent knockout victory of Jeremy Stephens, Kattar took this fight after Stephens failed to make weight continuing to showcase a stellar performance finishing Stephens with elbows towards the end of the second round.

Ige’s most recent bout was against Edson Barboza. This would be Barboza’s first fight at Featherweight and it didn’t go as planned for the former lightweight with Ige winning a split decision. What was a very close fight went to the judges who ultimately thought Ige did enough to get the nod.

In the Co-Main event, we see a bantamweight matchup between Frankie Edgar and Pedro Munhoz. This is the first time Edgar has made the move down to bantamweight. The former Lightweight champion was set to make the move in 2019 until a short notice loss to The Korean Zombie left him unable to participate in his scheduled bantamweight debut.

Pedro Munhoz most recently faced Aljamain Sterling in June of 2019, losing a unanimous decision. Munhoz is going to look to get back into the win column when he welcomes the former champion to his new division.

You can see the full card below.

Main Card:

  • Calvin Kattar vs. Dan Ige
  • Frankie Edgar vs. Pedro Munhoz
  • Carla Esparza vs. Marina Rodriguez

“Breaking: Calvin Kattar ( @CalvinKattar ) vs. Dan Ige ( @Dynamitedan808 ) will headline UFC Fight Night on July 15 at Fight Island in Abu Dhabi, per sources. Kattar coming off that highlight KO over Jeremy Stephens on May 9. Ige off a split decision over Edson Barboza.”

As Okamoto states Kattar is coming off perhaps the biggest win of his career. The 32-year-old picked up a highlight-reel knockout win against long-time contender Jeremy Stephens at UFC 249 on May 9. Prior to that he lost to Zabit Magomedsharipov but came out with immense credit for giving the Russian phenom his toughest test to date.

Ige is currently riding a six-fight win streak in the featherweight division. In his last fight he edged out former lightweight contender Edson Barboza who was making his divisional debut. The win although controversial was the biggest of his career and has earned him a headline slot and a shot at one of the best at 145lbs.
