With its first two Fan Expo events in Las Vegas big successes, and its first East Coast fan event in Boston in the books, the UFC holds its first international Fan Expo this weekend in conjunction with UFC 120 in London.

On Tuesday, the promotion’s Director of Canadian Operations, Tom Wright, said 2011 could see a Fan Expo in Canada – likely in Toronto when the UFC holds its first event there.

“I think if we bring a Fan Expo to Canada, most likely it would come to Ontario,” Wright said at a press conference for December’s UFC 124 event in Montreal.

Mixed martial arts, with the UFC leading the charge, has cleared another hurdle in the goal of bringing the sport to as much of the world as possible.

UFC president Dana White’s stock response when asked where the promotion wants to go next has been: “We’re taking this thing everywhere.” But up until this point, “everywhere” has not included Ontario, the largest province in Canada.

But after plenty of campaigning by the UFC, MMA can cross another name off its list. According to Ontario’s official website, the provincial government has passed legislation that will regulate MMA starting in 2011.

With the WEC’s first foray north of the border, it was only natural the promotion put some Canadians on the card.

On Sunday, at WEC 49: Varner vs. Shalorus, the co-main event will feature a pair of Canadians who have been waiting the better part of a decade for a crack at each other. When Mark Hominick and Yves Jabouin square off, it will be a fight WEC general manager Reed Harris says was eight years in the making.

“Basically, this is a fight that’s been trying to be put together for eight years,” Harris said Monday on a media call for WEC 49. “Sean Shelby, our matchmaker, put it together and now we’re going to get to see those guys finally go at it.”
