Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez appears to be open to fighting Kamaru Usman down the line.

The pound-for-pound number one fighter in boxing has previously dismissed Usman who has been relentlessly calling him out for quite some time now.

During a recent appearance on The MMA Hour, Canelo refused to rule out eventually clashing with the UFC welterweight champion but did say he’s got to secure his legacy in boxing first.

“Payday, payday,” Canelo said with a smirk when asked about potentially fighting Usman. “It’s a payday, I know, but maybe. Why not? You never say no, right?

“No, it’s not really something on my mind,” Canelo added. “I want a really good legacy for my career and then we can talk about other things.”

The Mexican knockout artist is set to square off against light-heavyweight champion Dimitry Bivol on May 7 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Usman is currently healing up after undergoing hand surgery. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ is expected to face off against 170lb number one contender Leon Edwards later this year.

Kamaru Usman Fancies His Chances In Boxing vs. Canelo

The talk of a potential crossover fight between Canelo and Usman started in July 2021 during an Instagram live Q&A when the UFC champ said the following.

“I think I can do anything that I put my mind to. I don’t disrespect Canelo. I think Canelo is one of the best, one of the greatest of this generation and I do not disrespect him at all. I respect his skills and I think he’s a phenomenal champion. But I also know whatever I put my mind to, I go out there and I get it. So if it’s in the cards in the future, maybe we’ll dance, we’ll see.”

Jorge Masvidal

Jorge Masvidal has been speaking about a potential crossover fight with the biggest star in boxing, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

‘Gamebred’ was in attendance as the Mexican defended his WBA, WBC and Ring Magazine super middleweight titles against Anvi Yildirim this past weekend.

Canelo dominated his Turkish opponent from the first bell. The 30-year-old scored a heavy knockdown in round three and Yildirim’s corner threw in the towel before the start of the fourth frame.

Post-fight, Masvidal was full of praise when talking about Canelo with IFL TV.

“I love to see the disparity, the great vast difference between the number one and everybody else,” Masvidal said. “Truly, Canelo is the pound-for-pound guy right now. Offense is looking insane. The defense looks great. And the way he’s getting his timing and distance? Ridiculous. I knew it was going to be a blowout, but I didn’t think it was going to be like that.

“After round one he was just pot shotting him to death,” Masvidal continued. “It was just interesting to see what he can do to a number one contender so easily. Brings up the question: who can challenge this dude at 165 pounds? Because I truly feel it’s his weight right here. I don’t see nobody at 165.”

‘Gamebred’ was then asked about a potential fight between him and Canelo.

“Definitely a dream,” Masvidal replied. “My first love is boxing and I still love it to this day. If a champion in MMA can come over and challenge a champion in boxing? For me, it’s more than a dream, it’s a fulfillment. I first fell in love with boxing before UFC, started boxing before I even saw the UFC, so it’d be just full circle amazingness.”

Masvidal understands his chances would be slim in a fight with Canelo but refused to count himself out.

“He’s one hell of a boxer, my brother,” Masvidal said. “Chances are limited, but I’m a dog in every fight I’m in.” (Transcribed by MMA Mania)

In another interview, Masvidal revealed his next fight will likely come against the UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman in August or September.

Quote: McGregor Could ‘Easily’ Command Canelo-Like Money In Streaming Deal

If Conor McGregor was an independent contractor, he could “easily” demand Canelo-like money from a streaming deal.

Streaming deals for fighters, such as the one boxing middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez recently signed, are changing the game.

Recently, Alvarez signed the biggest contract in sports history – a broadcast deal with the DAZN streaming service. DAZN now has the rights to broadcast the Mexican star’s fights. The streaming service has taken the combat sports world by storm.

They’re affiliated with the likes of Alvarez, English boxing sensation Anthony Joshua, and Bellator MMA. There have even been talks for DAZN to sign former middleweight king Gennady Golovkin. If mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters had similar opportunities to that of boxers, they could stand to make a lot of money.

Take Conor McGregor for example. Golden Boy Promotions’ Oscar De La Hoya, who helped land Canelo’s DAZN deal, spoke to Luke Thomas on “The MMA Hour” recently. He said that MMA fighters the caliber of McGregor could make Canelo-like money with a potential streaming deal (via MMA Fighting):

“That’s the beauty of being free agents,” said De La Hoya. “If you have somebody behind you who’s looking out for your best interests individually, absolutely — why not?

“There’s guys out there who are phenomenal, phenomenal fighters. That can have those types of deal. You take a look at Conor McGregor or you take a look at these fighters who are big, household names.

“Imagine if Conor McGregor was an independent contractor. He can easily get a deal like that on a DAZN or an ESPN+. But obviously they’re with UFC and UFC just works differently.”
