UFC Booking Alert: Pat Healy vs. Jamie Varner Slated for UFC on Fox 9

UFC on Fox 9 is shaping up to be a straight-up excellent card. The latest solid matchup was just announced as Pat Healy and Jamie Varner square up opposite one another in a lightweight contest. Both men are coming off losses but, on paper, this looks like yet another exciting and evenly-matched bout for the December 14th event in Sacramento.

Varner lost his last outing against Gleison Tibau via split decision. Before that, Varner bested Melvin Guillard and before that, he lost a thrilling bout to Joe Lauzon via submission, which won Fight of the Night honors at UFC on FOX 4. Healy recently returned after a marijuana-metabolite suspension that turned his incredible UFC-debut win over Jim Miller into a no-contest, and recently lost a decision to fellow Strikeforce vet Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 165. (Yes, I had to copy and paste Khabib’s name. No, I will never remember how to spell or pronounce it.)

Joining Healy and Varner on the December 14th UFC on Fox 9 card are new lightweight champion Anthony Pettis defending his strap against Josh Thomson, and Carlos Condit and Matt Brown trying to tear each other’s hearts out in a welterweight contender showdown. Also, Court McGee and Kelvin Gastelum do battle in one of those, TUF vs. TUF type contests. Your predictions, please.

UFC on Fox 9 got a very exciting welterweight matchup when the UFC announced they would add Carlos Condit vs. Matt Brown to the fight card.

No. 2-ranked Condit rebounded from his back-to-back losses with a stoppage of Martin Kampmann on August 28. Brown won his sixth straight in a quick KO against Mike Pyle on August 17. The win moved Brown into the top 10 at No. 10.

Whomever wins this fight will be in line for a title shot. It will be hard to argue against either man.

There is a lot at stake in this 170-pound scrap, and it should be one of the more anticipated fights of that card. These are two exciting warriors, and this is your early look at the matchup.

Barnburner Alert: Carlos Condit vs. Matt Brown Added to UFC on FOX 9

(You can’t really get a good look at Carlos’s face in this picture, but we imagine it looks something like this. / Photo via Getty)

Yet another potential slugfest has been added to the UFC on FOX 9 lineup. FOX Sports breaks the news that former UFC interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit will face Gritty Son-of-a-Bitch™ Matt Brown at the December 14th event.

Condit’s most recent appearance ended in a savage fourth-round TKO of Martin Kampmann, which snapped a two-fight losing streak. Meanwhile, Brown is on a six-fight win streak in the 170-pound division, with five of those wins ending by stoppage within the first two rounds.

While some Natural Born Killer fans might consider this a step backwards for Condit — who is currently listed as the #2 welterweight contender on the UFC’s official media rankings, compared to Brown all the way down at #10 — keep in mind that Condit specifically asked for this fight. “[Brown has] been on a tear, and it’d be really exciting for the fans,” Condit explained to MMAJunkie earlier this month. And so, Condit gets the fan-friendly matchup he wants, and Brown gets what he’s long been pleading for — a chance to prove that he’s an elite-level welterweight. Will he rise to the challenge?

UFC on FOX 9 will also feature the Anthony Pettis vs. Josh Thompson lightweight title fight, as well as Urijah Faber vs. Michael McDonald, Chad Mendes vs. Nik Lentz, Joe Lauzon vs. Mac Danzig, and Scott Jorgensen vs. Ian McCall. Sacramento, you really don’t deserve this much awesomeness.

UFC on Fox 9 might end up being the most ridiculously stacked free card in MMA history with the latest addition to the show being added on Wednesday.

Welterweights Carlos Condit and Matt Brown have agreed to meet on the December 14 show, taking place in Sacramento, Calif.

UFC officials confirmed the booking via Fox Sports on Wednesday.

The bout will pit two of the division’s most exciting fighters against each other with possible title contention hanging in the balance.

There hasn’t been a more dominant run in the UFC of late than what Brown has been able to do in his last six fights. The Ohio native has won all six bouts while stopping five of the opponents by knockout or TKO.

Brown most recently flattened former training partner Mike Pyle by first round knockout in just 29-seconds at UFC Fight Night 26 in Boston. His upcoming bout scheduled for UFC on Fox 9 will put Brown on free television for the fifth time in a row.

UFC president Dana White even joked recently calling Brown ‘Mr. Fox’ for his tendency to not only compete on the televised cards, but also by putting on blistering performances like the ones he’s had lately.

Hoping to stop Brown’s momentum will be former UFC interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit, fresh off a win over Martin Kampmann in his last fight.

Condit actually headed into the rematch with Kampmann on a two-fight skid after losing to UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre and current top contender Johny Hendricks in back-to-back fights.

The former champion wasted no time getting back on track, however, as he punished Kampmann over the course of their main event battle before finally putting him away in the fourth round.

Now Condit will look to jump back into the title picture when he takes on Brown in what should be one of the most highly anticipated battles of the entire year.

Brown has gone to decision only three times in his 29 fight career, while Condit has finished 27 opponents out of his 29 career wins.

The welterweight showdown is expected to occupy a main card slot on the show headlined by lightweight champion Anthony Pettis defending his belt against Josh Thomson.

Tattoo Artist Continues Legal Battle over Art Featured in UFC Branded Video Game

A tattoo artist who created an original piece of artwork that was inked into UFC welterweight contender Carlos Condit remains at the center of a lawsuit against THQ, the creators of UFC Undisputed.

Christopher Escobedo began his legal battle when the UFC Undisputed game was released with Condit‘s lion tattoo inked on his ribs in full view for the entire game.

The precedent Escobedo is claiming is that original tattoo art is protected under the copyright law, and THQ did not have his permission to use the artwork featured in its game.

Since the lawsuit began THQ has gone into bankruptcy, which is where the suit was picked. A U.S. bankruptcy court judge was then asked to value the worth of the tattoo infringement claim against the video game maker.

According to court documents released by The Hollywood Reporter, the judge placed the value of the claim at $22,500—the amount that Condit was paid by THQ for his likeness rights to be used in the game.

This is the first time that a monetary figure has been revealed for a fighter being paid for likeness rights since the UFC began making new video games a few years ago.

The court documents also revealed that 4.1 million units of the UFC Undisputed game had been sold, which is how they valued the settlement amount. They are asking for $4.16 million for the copyright infringement suit.

The debtors (THQ) responded to Escobedo‘s claims with a very detailed response as to why his lawsuit should not merit a higher value—considering that Condit has not filed suit—and should at least be considered a co-author, given the fact that the tattoo is on his body and was partially his design that the tattoo artist then drew up.

As THQI demonstrated, the value of Escobedo‘s claim must be reduced to reflect (a) the exceedingly low value of a license of a single tattoo to a game depicting more than a hundred fighters, hundreds of tattoos and songs, and myriad other creative elements, (b) the likelihood that a tattoo on another person’s body is not copyrightable, (c) the likelihood that Condit has an implied license to license to THQ his own digital image (including an image of the Lion Tattoo), without restriction by a tattoo artist; and (d) the likelihood that, if the Lion Tattoo is copyrightable, Condit would have to at least be considered a joint author of the tattoo with an equal right to license it to others.

The $22,500 figure was handed over to Escobedo for a settlement amount, but he was unhappy with the verdict and has now filed yet another appeal to the decision. The case will now head to a bankruptcy appellate panel to try to continue his fight.

The new court hearing could then settle once and for all the value of a copyright issue when regarding a tattoo and original art being used or reproduced on television, film or, in this case, a video game.
