Cat Zinano is targeting Bellator women’s featherweight gold next.

The former UFC title challenger went 2-0 with her new promotion following a first-round armbar win over Olivia Parker at Bellator 256 on Friday night.

It was notably her first submission win in nearly nine years as “Alpha” was pleased to go back to her roots.

“This is a very sweet win. To get a finish, I’ve always loved that thrill of the quit,” Zingano said (via MMA Junkie). “So it was really good to get a finish. It’s been a minute. So I’m really happy to have that. I feel good.”

As for what’s next?

Zingano is looking ahead to the upcoming featherweight title fight between current champion Cris Cyborg and Leslie Smith which takes place May 21 at Bellator 259. And she wants to fight the winner.

“I think I’ve done enough over time to get a shot at the winner,” Zingano said. “With this performance, who knows? I know that I’m a lot more experienced coming into this fight. … I’ve almost locked horns with all of these girls at a certain point. It’ll be beautiful that it gets to happen over here.

“All of these girls are a tough test. Really, the fighter I’m fighting out there is always me. It’s always how I’m going to show up. I have what it takes to beat all of these girls, but it comes down to preparation, it comes down to mindset, and just being my best self that night.”

‘Alpha’ Cat Zingano is set to make her second appearance for Bellator against Olivia Parker on April 9th.

She recently sat down to speak with LowKick MMA’s Frank Bonada to discuss her experiences with Bellator so far, her upcoming fight and more.

2020 was no doubt a very unique year for fighters, who had to compete and train under very different circumstances. Zingano revealed what it was like to prepare and then preform under covid protocols.

“The experience was weird” she said. “Training for it was totally a modification that I wasn’t used to. I can be very very particular with how my training camp goes. So to have that be so different, it was really good me to be out of my comfort zone, and still going out there and getting the win. Even though everything was crazy.”

“The silence of the crowd was also unique and I thought was pretty cool and interesting. It was a lot more sensual. You can hear, and smell, and see all of these different ways that wasn’t typical. I thought it was cool.”

Zingano holds wins over some of the greatest MMA fighters of all time, most notably a TKO finish of Amanda Nunes. Thus it stands to reason that she will always aspire to take on the toughest challenge available. In Bellator, that challenge is Cris Cyborg. However, Zingano is also focused on the task at hand. She stated the following:

“The goal my entire career is always to end up fighting the best at the top and a run for the gold. Right now that’s Cyborg, she’s got the belt, she’s ranked number 1. She’s got that going. So I’m continuing those goals and going after her. But none of that matters. That’s not even a choice or an option right now because what I have to focus on is the task at hand. And to walk towards that task minute by minute. Whatever happens from that will dictate what gets to happen next. But nothing happens next without handling what I got right now.”

Another former opponent of Zingano’s is Miesha Tate, who recently made headlines by announcing she is returning to MMA following an extended layoff. When asked her thought’s on Tate’s return, Zingano stated the following:

“A couple of years ago I had been asked to do a super fight jiu-jitsu match against her, for ONE FC. Either they asked me right before I was supposed to go into a surgery, or I had just got out of a surgery. So I wasn’t able to do it. But my point is that I knew that she’s been itching for competition. I know that she’s been wanting to get out there and get her hands dirty.”

“At one point I do know that the only fight she’d be interested in coming back to the fight game for would be against me. Maybe they (the UFC) let us borrow her for the weekend, maybe they borrow me for the weekend. That would be a cool fight to see happen. As well as a rematch with Nunes. But we’ll see. Right now none of that’s in the works but I definitely think it could be.”

When Bellator launches on Showtime, it will do so with a couple of former UFC title challengers in Cat Zingano and Liz Carmouche.

The card will mark the sophomore appearances for both fighters after a pair of successful debuts.

Zingano entered the Bellator cage for the first time last September opposite Gabby Holloway. It was her first fight since December 2018 after being released by the UFC following a TKO loss to Megan Anderson that capped a 1-4 stretch. Zingano looked in fine form in her return, dominating Holloway on the way to a unanimous decision. In her next outing, she will face Olivia Parker. After starting her career 4-0, Parker made her Invicta debut in July 2020, losing by submission in 65 seconds.

The first female fighter to step into the UFC octagon, Carmouche was released by the UFC after going 5-5 and twice challenging for promotional gold. She quickly found a new home in Bellator and debuted with a third-round submission over DeAnna Bennett at Bellator 246 last September. She’ll now meet Vanessa Porto, who has quiet the impressive resume of her own.

A longtime staple of Invicta FC, Porto fought 11 times for the promotion, challenging for the flyweight title on three occasions. After falling short against Barb Honchak and Jennifer Maia in her first attempts, the third time proved to be the charm as she finally claimed the belt with a decision win over Pearl Gonzalez. Overall, Porto has won four-in-a-row and will look to keep her momentum rolling in her Bellator debut.

Zingano and Carmouche won’t be the only former UFC fighters featured at Bellator 256. The event kicks off the promotion’s light heavyweight tournament and showcases Ryan Bader, Lyoto Machida and Corey Anderson at the top of the card. Bader and Machida will square off against each other, while Anderson will welcome Dovletdzhan Yagshimuradov to the Bellator ranks.

Bellator 256 takes place at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut on April 9. The main card airs on Showtime at 9PM ET.

How do you think Cat Zingano and Liz Carmouche will fair in their fights?
