As soon as Bellator President Scott Coker got word that the UFC was “out of the Cyborg business,” he immediately expressed interest in signing the former featherweight champ. Now it would appear that talks between Bellator and the Brazilian star are heating up.

As Coker told MMA Fighting, “It’s not anywhere near complete but we’re definitely in the mix.”

“We think she’d be a great addition to our 145-pound weight class. I think her fighting [Bellator featherweight champ] Julia Budd would be an amazing event, but it’s not done yet. Hopefully we’ll have some news in the next 10 days or so.”

Coker and Cris Cyborg have had a successful business relationship in the past when the two both worked together under the Strikeforce banner, roughly a decade ago. As it turns out, Cris Cyborg isn’t the only big-name free agent Bellator has their eye on. Apparently, Coker is also interested in signing recently released former UFC title challenger, Cat Zingano.

However, the Bellator President is unsure if she is completely free from her UFC contract.

“We’ll have to make sure, but if she is completely free, then we should have a conversation,” Coker stated.

Do you think Bellator can land the two biggest free agents in all of mixed martial arts?

Cat Zingano was shockingly released from the UFC yesterday. It came as a surprise to many given the fact that she still was a top-15 bantamweight and one of the line featherweights.

But, a 1-4 run paved the way for Zingano to be released from the Las Vegas-based promotion. Why she was released was unknown until she released a statement to ESPN.

“I didn’t want to take the ultimatum this time,” Zingano said in her statement to ESPN. “So I guess you can say it was mutual. I had a project that was very, very important to me, and to the MMA community and fans, and I needed to put me, my son, my training and that first before I had anything to give to the UFC. It’s s—ty timing, but it happens, and I’m still a fighter and ready to f— s— up.”

Zingano won’t say what project it is, but it is something she needs to do, and the UFC wanted her to fight. Along with the fact that so many fighters are getting signed by on the Contender Series, the UFC has to create roster spots, and “Alpha” could have fallen victim to that.

The former title challenger is 10-4 as a pro with notable wins over the likes of Amanda Nunes, Miesha Tate, and Raquel Pennington among others. She also fought Ronda Rousey at UFC 184 for the title but was submitted in just 14 seconds.

Even though Cat Zingano was released, she is still a top-15 fighter and will have promotions lining up to fight her.

Where do you think Cat Zingano will sign?

Former UFC women’s bantamweight title challenger Cat Zingano has reportedly been released by the promotion.

That’s according to MMA Junkie, who cite two people with knowledge of the situation. The news is not official yet, though the UFC usually never announces when a fighter is released. However, UFC president Dana White nor Zingano have commented as of yet.

Zingano is coming off a TKO defeat to Megan Anderson and is 1-4 in her last five fights. Her losses have come to top opposition, however, such as Ronda Rousey, Julianna Pena and Ketlen Vieira.

Her loss to Anderson was also controversial as the Aussie’s toe made contact with her eye, rendering her unable to continue. She had tried to appeal the loss, but to no avail. Her last win was a decision victory over Marion Reneau in July last year.

Interestingly, “Alpha” notably holds a win over current bantamweight and featherweight champion Amanda Nunes. One could imagine given her reputation and name, a fight would have been made between the two.

However, with Zingano’s recent results, along with the fact that she recently turned 37, the UFC may have decided it was time to part ways.

Were you shocked with Zingano’s release? Where do you think she’ll go next?

Back at UFC 232 in December, former UFC women’s bantamweight title challenger Cat Zingano suffered a bizarre injury.

She was hit with a vicious eye poke during her fight against Megan Anderson. However, it came by way of a head kick, as one of Anderson’s toes hit Zingano in the eye. Zingano was unable to defend herself and was finished by way of TKO. She recently and unsuccessfully appealed that defeat.

Speaking to media at UFC on ESPN 1, Zingano warned something should be done about the rules. If not, it will be “open season” on eye pokes (via MMAjunkie):

“If they don’t make a rule on it, it’s open season on eye pokes. I’ve got mad dexterity with my toes, so if you’re telling me we get to just aim for people’s eyeballs with our toes now, that’s not really safe moving forward, but we’ll all find a way to win.

“If you put me in some thing on the ground, and I get to dig my toes into your eyes, too, that’s kind of gnarly, but we’re in there trying to survive. Me or you, man.”

“Alpha” noted that she’s still suffering from some symptoms from her injury, but doctors expect her to make a full recovery. She even spoke to Michael Bisping, who offered her advice on how he handled his own famous eye injury.
