Charles Oliveira coach confirms UFC return links to Arman Tsarukyan fight the champ is back

Former undisputed lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira is “back” according to his coach, Jorge Patino Macaco, amid recent rumblings of a title-eliminator clash with surging Armenian contender, Arman Tsarukyan early next yea.r

Oliveira, the current number one ranked lightweight contender, has been sidelined since he co-headlined UFC 289 back in June of this year, stopping the winning streak of recent main event feature, Beneil Dariush with a stunning opening round ground strikes TKO win.

And booked to make his return to the Octagon at UFC 294 back in October of this year, Oliveira was forced to withdraw from a championship rematch with Islam Makhachev in Abu Dhabi, UAE – after suffering a nasty laceration over his right eyebrow ahead of the scheduled title re-run.

As for Tsarukyan, the Armenian contender is in the midst of an impressive three-fight winning run, most recently stopping common-foe, Dariush with a blistering first round KO at the beginning of this month at UFC Austin.

And calling for a title-eliminator with Sao Paulo finishing ace, Oliveira if he misses out on a title fight rematch with prior Octagon rival, Makhachev, Tsarukyan and the Brazilian appear to both have news regarding their next fight on the horizon.

Charles Oliveira’s UFC return confirmed by coach

Posting on his official Instagram Stories, the above-mentioned Patino Macaco shared an image of Oliveira – with the caption, “The Champ is back @charlesdobronx.”

As for Tsarukyan – who clinched the number four rank in the division with his knockout win over Dariush, the Armenian posted “Big news is coming” on his official Instagram account.

Justin Gaethje Lobbies for UFC title fight with Islam Makhachev: ‘Oliveira had his shot and didn’t show up’

Justin Gaethje

Justin Gaethje is ready for another shot at UFC gold.

Originally scheduled to rematch Charles Oliveira at UFC 294, Islam Makhachev instead defended his lightweight world title against Alexander Volkanovski after ‘Do Bronx’ was forced to withdraw due to a cut sustained whilst training.

The ‘Dagestani Destroyer’ made quick work of Volkanovski, scoring a vicious first-round head-kick KO.

Everyone assumed that the UFC would look to rebook the originally scheduled headliner between Makhachev and Oliveira for early 2024. However, it now appears that Islam Makhachev and his manager, Ali Abdelaziz, have completely moved on from running it back with Oliveira in favor of a fresh matchup with current BMF titleholder Justin Gaethje.

‘The Highlight’ is more than ready to jump the queue and sign on the dotted line if that’s what Makhachev wants. All UFC CEO Dana White has to do is make the call.

“Waiting on the call,” Gaethje wrote on X. “Ready when you are @ufc @danawhite Let’s see who can kick the others head off first @MAKHACHEVMMA Do Bronx had his shot and didn’t show up for the rematch. It is what it is.”

Is the third time the charm for Justin Gaethje?

Gaethje’s last appearance inside the Octagon came at UFC 291 when he scored a highlight-reel-worthy knockout of Dustin Poirier. It was his second-straight victory after putting on a brilliant performance against Rafael Fiziev four months prior. Gaethje has won three of his last five with his two losses coming in championship fights.

If ‘The Highlight’ does land another lightweight title opportunity, it will be his third, and likely final chance at gold after coming up short against former champions Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira.

Islam Makhachev shuts down Charles Oliveira fight this guy thinks he deserves rematch with me

Undisputed lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev has firmly put the brakes on a title fight rematch with ex-titleholder, Charles Oliveira – mocking the Brazilian’s call for a re-run for gold, poking fun at his prior win over the Sao Paulo favorite.

Makhachev, the current undisputed lightweight champion and pound-for-pound number one on the UFC’s books, most recently headlined UFC 294 back in October in Abu Dhabi, UAE – landing a dominant first round high-kick knockout win over Alexander Volkanovski in the pair’s short-notice rematch.

Initially, Makhachev was slated to headline that card in the Middle East against Oliveira, until a nasty laceration above the Brazilian’s eyebrow ruled him from the pay-per-view card.

Fighting Makhachev in a vacant lightweight title fight at UFC 280 in October of last year, Oliveira dropped a second round arm-triangle submission loss, seeing his division-best undefeated run come to a crashing halt.

Islam Makhachev rules out rematch with Charles Oliveira

And despite staking his claim for a reworked title fight rematch with Makhachev – potentially next year at the very earliest, Makhachev has overnight cast doubt on a re-run, mocking the Brazilian’s prior stoppage loss.

“This guy thinks he deserve rematch with me?” Islam Makhachev posted on his official X account, accompanied by a picture of Charles Oliveira in the immediate aftermath of his stoppage loss at UFC 280.

And providing an update on his fighting future off the back of his knockout win over Australian favorite, Volkanovski two months ago, Makhachev claimed he would like the opportunity to fight former interim champion and current symbolic BMF titleholder, Justin Gaethje – as soon as UFC 299 in May of next year in Miami, Florida.
“To be honest, I’ve already told I’m not that interested in rematches,” Islam Makhachev told Ushatayka. “Because if you want to win someone in a good way, you have to add new names.”

“There is (Justin) Gaethje, who I would say deserved a fight,” Islam Makhachev continued. “I think it would be more interesting to fight him. I think in March, maybe – most likely, yes, at the number event [UFC 299].”

Do you expect Islam Makhachev to fight Charles Oliveira again?

Arman Tsarukyan calls out Charles Oliveira for title eliminator after UFC Austin let's see who's number one

Off the back of his stunning opening round knockout win over Beneil Dariush at UFC Austin over the course of last weekend, surging Armenian contender, Arman Tsarukyan has called for a title-eliminator fight with former undisputed champion, Charles Oliveira – urging the Brazilian to determine the next challenger to Islam Makhachev’s throne.

Tsarukyan, who headlined UFC Fight Night Austin over the course of last weekend in Texas, landed a stunning opening round knockout win over the above-mentioned common-foe, Dariush – stopping the Iranian grappler with a thunderous right hook inside just a minute of the first frame

As for Oliveira, the former undisputed lightweight champion currently holds the number one rank in the official divisional rankings, most recently turning in a stunning first round ground strikes TKO win of his own against Dariush back in June of this year, returning to the winner’s enclosure.

Forced from a slated October rematch with Makhachev through a nasty laceration ahead of a UFC 294 title rematch, Oliveira has been pegged to fight the Russian as soon as March of next year by color-commentator, Daniel Cormier, however, a pairing has yet to be booked officially.

Arman Tsarukyan calls out Charles Oliveira

And as far as the newly-minted number four rated, Tsarukyan, a title-eliminator against the Sao Paulo favorite should be made next by the promotion.

“If (Charles) Oliveira thinks he is number one contender, and he’s got the fight, let’s fight and let’s figure out who is number one,” Arman Tsarukyan told MMA Fighting. “If he wins, he can go to the title, if I win, I’ll go.”

“He pulled out from the last fight and he just beat Beneil Dariush and lost to Islam (Makhachev) so it’s like 99% he’s going to lose to Islam [again],” Arman Tsarukyan continued. “So, if they want to see that fight, yeah go ahead, but if they want to see a new generation, new fighter, they gotta put me on that fight and I’m going to show the world like who is the best in our division.”

Who wins in a future fight: Arman Tsarukyan or Charles Oliviera?
