Charles Oliveira details the decision to withdraw from his fight with Islam Makhachev at UFC 294 this weekend.

With just 10 days to go, Oliveira was forced out of his rematch with Oliveira after suffering a horrendous cut above his eye in his last sparring session of camp. The Brazilian has since be replaced by Alexander Volkanovski in what is another rematch.

The Brazilian has become a fan favourite since his legendary title run and time as champion, many were disappointed with the news and it is unclear if Oliveira will get another shot on his return.

Charles Oliveira talks Pull-out

Talking with Ag Fight, Oliveira discussed his withdrawal and while it was disappointing to have to do so ultimately he and his team felt it was the right decision. ‘Do Bronx’ says that it is not about money, rather legacy.

“We made this decision together,” Oliveira began. “We all sat down and thought about what would be best for us. We’re in a moment in our lives where we don’t have to fight just for the sake of fighting. If this was about money, I’d be in Abu Dhabi right now, for sure, waiting for my moment to fight, because we are talking about a lot of money.” (H/T Bloody Elbow)

“It’s not about money. It’s about legacy.” Oliveira continued. “It’s about what we want to show in the middle of the fight. There would be no point in going out there just for the first grazing punch that touched me to open up the cut and make the fight bet stopped and give him another win. We thought this through, we analysed it thoroughly and we made this decision together.”

Former undisputed lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira has claimed everyone is interested in him fighting former two-division titleholder, Conor McGregor – as he plans a route back to competition following his withdrawal from UFC 294 this weekend.

Oliveira, the current number one ranked lightweight contender and former divisional champion, was slated to return to the Octagon at UFC 294 this weekend in Abu Dhabi, UAE, taking on arch-rvial and incumbent lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev in a title re-run.

However, just 10 day’s out from his scheduled rematch with the Russian, Sao Paulo finishing ace, Oliveira was forced to withdraw from the event’s headliner, after he suffered a sizeable laceration above his right eyebrow ahead of the bout, in the final sparring session of his camp for UFC 294.

Charles Oliveira open to return fight with Conor McGregor

And told he has no chance of fighting Makhachev again by his manager, Ali Abdelaziz, Oliveira, who is still aiming for a rematch with the Russian, or replacement challenger, Alexander Volkanovski, also weighed up a clash with Dublin striking veteran, McGregor in his comeback to the sport.

“It’s not that it doesn’t make sense, I’m a UFC employee,” Charles Oliveira told MMA Fighting. “Whoever they say, we’ll make it happen. But I’m the number one contender, and I beat everybody else below me. The Conor (McGregor) fight is a fight that I’ve been asking for a long time. And I never lied, I was the only one being real about fighting Conor.”

“Charles Oliveira against Conor McGregor, money fight,” Charles Oliveira explained. “It’s a fight that will give us a lot of money. Conor sells, Charles also sells. It’s a fight that everyone wants. The only one we don’t know if [he] wants this fight is Conor because I’ve said it a thousand times, 170 (pounds), 185 (pounds), 155 (pounds), I don’t know, choose the weight. Say where and I’ll be there. Just send the contract and we’ll sign it. That’s the fight. Title fight? I’m waiting. UFC makes the call. I deserve it. I’m waiting right here, next to the people that really love me. I’m waiting for my moment.”

Charles Oliveira urged to fight Justin Gaethje in rematch after UFC 294 title bout withdrawal

Despite registering a one-sided first round submission win over Justin Gaethje just last year, former lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira has been told to rematch the former in order to earn another title fight, by former foe, Islam Makhachev.

Oliveira, the current number one ranked lightweight contender, was scheduled to headline UFC 294 this weekend in Abu Dhabi, UAE, in a title fight rematch with the above-mentioned, Makhachev.

However, just 10 days’ out from fight night, the Sao Paulo finisher was forced to withdraw from the pairing with Makhachev after he suffered a nasty laceration above his right eyebrow, resulting in the insertion of Alexander Volkanovski into the bout on short-notice.

And despite returning to the winner’s enclosure with a June knockout win over Beneil Dariush after his title fight defeat to Makhachev last October, Charles Oliveira has been ruled from a fight with the incumbent again by his manager, Ali Abdelaziz.

Furthermore, American Kickboxing Academy staple, Makhachev claims both Oliveira and Gaethje should battle once more to determine his next challenger, as he eyes a stint at the welterweight limit after UFC 294.

“You know, honestly I feel, I’m gonna beat (Alexander) Volkanovski now, and I have two opponents [waiting for me after UFC 294],” Islam Makhachev told assembled media during his availability. “(Justin) Gaethje and (Charles) Oliveira. I think they have to fight again, and who is win, I just beat this guy, again.”

Fighting newly-minted BMF champion, Gaethje back in May on hostile grounds in Phoenix, Arizona, Oliveira, who had been stripped of his lightweight title due to a weight miss prior to the bout, submitted former interim champion, Gaethje with a dominant opening round rear-naked choke in ‘The Copper State’.

Charles Oliveira accused of avoiding UFC 294 fight never wanted to go Abu Dhabi

Former undisputed lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira has been accused of never actually wanting to fight rival, Islam Makhachev for a second time this weekend at UFC 294 – due to the bout taking place in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Oliveira, the current number one ranked lightweight contender under the banner of the promotion, was slated to headline UFC 294 this weekend in the MIddle East in a championship rematch with Makhachev, however, was forced from the bout on just 10 days’ notice after he suffered a laceration over his right eyebrow.

In his place comes undisputed featherweight champion and pound-for-pound number one, Alexander Volkanovski – who replaces Oliveira and himself lands a title fight rematch with Makhachev at the Etihad Arena.

Belal Muhammad speculates Charles Oliveira got injured on purpose

Sharing his thoughts on Oliveira’s withdrawal, despite claims from the Brazilian himself that he didn’t want to go to Abu Dhabi and fight “unprepared” due to his grisly injury, surging welterweight challenger, Belal Muhammad has claimed Oliveira never wanted to compete in the region in the first place.

“To me, Charles (Oliveira) never wanted to go to Abu Dhabi,” Belal Muhammad said on his Instagram account. “He never wanted to fight in enemy territory, as he said. He wanted it where he wanted it. Do I say he did it purposely? Who knows? But he chose not to fight.”

“Charles got what he wanted,” Muhammad explained. “He’s not fighting Abu Dhabi. As a fighter, you understand the game, right? The training is the hardest part. But the biggest fight of your life, the biggest rematch of your life. You get a cut 10 days before the fight in your eyebrow? Who are you training with, bro?”

And despite claims from prominent mixed martial arts manager, Ali Abdelaziz that Oliveira won’t be fighting for a title in the future against Makhachev, color-commentator, Bisping has praised the Brazilian’s decision to exit the UFC 294 main event.

“If it is a bad cut two, three weeks away, two and a half weeks, yeah listen, you can’t compete like that,” Michael Bisping said on his YouTube channel. “You can compete with injuries, but a huge cut on the eye, I mean, that’s going to be bad. It’s going to open up straight away and that’s going to be it. Or maybe he even gets out of there and the UFC pull him from the fight straight away.”

Earning a title fight rematch with Makhachev, Chute Boxe MMA staple, Oliveira most recently landed a first round ground strikes TKO win over the surging, Beneil Dariush back in June at UFC 289.
