Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman has a long road to recovery after suffering a brutal leg break at UFC 261 against Uriah Hall, but he made a big step in the right direction earlier this week in the process.

Just two months after his injury and surgery, Weidman is back in the gym doing play-boxing and other low-impact exercises. Weidman is expected to be out for the next 4-6 months minimum but is already on the right track to eventually making his return to competition.

In a recent appearance on Michael Bisping‘s “Believe You Me” podcast, Weidman provided lots of good news in regards to his recovery and outlook for his fighting future.

“It’s been pretty damn brutal, as you can imagine. It completely sucks but I will say, I was actually in the gym today,” Weidman said. “I boxed a little bit. I figured I was going to go to the gym and hit the bag for like a minute and then put my leg up, elevate it and just chill out, just be happy to be in the gym, but there were some guys around and we started to play sparring and I was like, ‘Man, this is awesome!’ It felt so good to be back in the gym.”

“So that was a big day for me, but it’s been a crazy road.”

This is excellent news for Weidman as many thought that he wouldn’t be able to make a full return to the UFC after the leg break. Weidman is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished middleweights in UFC history with a four-fight reign as the UFC middleweight champion as well as a plethora of fight night bonuses.

While it remains unclear as to if/when Weidman will fully recover from his injury and make a return to the UFC octagon, it’s encouraging to see that he is on the right track physically and mentally after one of the most devastating injuries in recent memory.

Luke Rockhold has bizarrely accused his long-time rival, Chris Weidman, of having “feminine shins” after the ‘All American’ suffered a horrific leg break at UFC 261.

The former middleweight champion was trying to work himself back into title contention against Uriah Hall last month. Weidman opened the first round with a powerful leg kick. A cracking sound was audible, and it quickly became evident that Weidman had suffered one of the worst injuries in MMA history.

Anderson Silva who twice shared the Octagon with Weidman and suffered a terrible leg injury of his own during one of those fights was quick to offer words some kind words.

Rockhold did the same when asked by The Schmo to offer some words of encouragement to the man he beat to become middleweight champion at UFC 194 in 2015. The 36-year-old just couldn’t resist taking a childish dig at Weidman in the process.

“You know I wish him all the best,” Rockhold said. “You know, that’s a tough one. I don’t know what it is like to have those little feminine shins, you know? I don’t know. Because I broke mine first kick of the fight. But, it somehow didn’t break.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Rockhold last competed in July 2019 when he was brutally knocked out by Jan Blachowicz at light-heavyweight.

Many felt it was time for him to call it a day afterwards and that seemed to be the case after Rockhold claimed it was very possible he wouldn’t fight again.

In August 2020, Rockhold announced his intention to fight on. He’s been looking for a fight ever since but is yet to be booked. The former champion has expressed his frustration as no-one in the middleweight top 10 currently appears to be interested in fighting him.

Chris Weidman still plans to fight once he is healthy.

Weidman made headlines last month at UFC 261 after he suffered a gruesome leg break just 17 seconds into his middleweight encounter with Uriah Hall.

He has since undergone surgery and is currently on the road to recovery, but things have been far from easy for the former 185-pound champion.

“Initially, I was super optimistic, because after surgery I just figured it was going to be three, maybe four days’ worth of pain and then I’d be kind of back into it,” Weidman told ESPN. “I’ve had 23 surgeries, so it’s not like it’s my first rodeo going through a surgery. But I didn’t realize how different this was. When compared to every other surgery, this was a serious, traumatic thing that happened in my leg.

“Recovery’s going to be way longer and harder than I’ve ever experienced. I went through a tough time about the four- or five-day mark postsurgery, because it started going the other way. It started becoming more painful, as opposed to getting better. And it was just so excruciating, to just get up for me to crutch my way to the bathroom. I would talk myself into it. I had to amp myself up and mentally prepare myself just to get to the bathroom.”

When the injury happened, most observers assumed this was the end of Weidman’s career.

After all, he’d be out for at least a year while he is also 36 years of age and won just two of his last eight outings since losing the middleweight title back in 2015.

However, Weidman — who began physical therapy on Tuesday — is still hopeful he will fight. Provided he gets his body back to the condition it was in before the Hall fight.

“I was in a very good spot physically, mentally, spiritually. Had some big goals I was ready to accomplish, and I cannot believe this happened to me. … It’s just so frustrating,” Weidman added. “I don’t know how much work it’s going to take, but yeah, this is what I want. I just know how good I am. And I want to be able to prove it. And I don’t have many more years left of being able to do that. My body never felt so good before this fight. I really was excited to show the world how good I am able to put it out there.

“If I can get my body back to where I feel like I’m that guy again, I 100% want to fight. I want to be able to demonstrate the talents I have, put on a show and then also be able to inspire people by coming back from this. It is not going to be easy. It’s way, way tougher of a recovery already in the first 10 days.”
