Former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold has slammed Chris Weidman’s “pathetic” performance against Omari Ahkmedov at UFC Vegas 6. Weidman recorded his first win since 2017 against the #11 ranked Russian this past weekend. The ‘All-American’ relied on a heavy wrestling game to pick up a decision win.

Soon after Rockhold announced his return to fighting and today he spoke to Submission Radio about what motivated him to make that decision, he said.

“I still want to fight. Being away has given me a chance to clear my head and do the things I’ve always missed doing. I’ve missed a lot of life. 15 years of MMA and always getting ready for a fight and not being able to go here, travel there and do what I want. It’s always relied upon a training camp and it’s this, and it’s nice to get away from it and just be able to go on my own and be free to do what I like to do at that time. So, I’m still enjoying myself, still recovering and still getting my body right too. There’s injuries and things that have stacked up over the years that I was compromised with, and it was about getting that right too. So, I’m feeling better, I’m getting better, and I know I still have more in me. I just have to be focused without any outside pressure, any weight on my shoulders, coming in with all kind of things that I allowed and took upon myself I don’t think helped the situation where I was at. So, I’m gonna come back and when I’m good and ready and that will be sometime soon. I imagine at the end of the year or early next year.”

Rockhold went on to speak about Weidman’s fight against Akhmedov – he wasn’t impressed.

“Pathetic,” he said of the fight. “Maybe he had weight issues or what. I mean, it looked like a heavyweight fight. It looked like a low-level heavyweight fight. I don’t know. I didn’t like it. It’s a comeback, it’s a weight issue. Maybe he’s got some issues, but nah, nah – look, it was bad.”

In 2015 Rockhold dethroned Weidman at UFC 194. Despite picking up a decisive fourth round TKO victory the 35-year-old remains interested in running it back. “To shut them up,” he said when asked about his motivation for facing Weidman again. “I mean, what’s worse than beating up a guy and then he keeps running his mouth?”

Luke Rockhold is not done fighting yet.

The former UFC middleweight champion last competed in July last year when he was brutally knocked out by Jan Blachowicz.

Many felt it was time for him to call it a day afterwards and that seemed to be the case after he claimed in October that it was very possible he didn’t fight again.

Those plans have changed now as he told ESPN he plans on resuming his fighting career.

“Because I felt like it,” he replied when asked why he had a change of heart.

Rockhold Hopes To Compete Before 2020

The 35-year-old is currently recovering from an earlier surgery this year where he repaired a torn labrum and rotator cuff. However, with a month left of rehab, he is hopeful he competes before the end of the year.

And he recently hinted at a rematch with Chris Weidman following the latter’s win over Omari Akhmedov at UFC Vegas 6 this past weekend.

Rockhold notably defeated Weidman to become middleweight champion in 2015. The pair were scheduled to face each other in a rematch in 2018 only for Rockhold to pull out through injury.

Maybe we will see the rematch nearly five years in the making.

What do you make of this news? And do you think a rematch with Weidman is what makes sense?

Marvin Vettori wants Chris Weidman next.

Weidman snapped a two-fight losing streak and returned to the win column following a hard-fought unanimous decision victory over Omari Akhmedov in the co-main event of UFC Vegas 6 last night.

The former middleweight champion declared soon after that he was back and ready to take on the top fighters in the 185-pound division.

Some observers, however, believe Weidman should continue to face the lower-ranked fighters and further build his confidence up — especially as he had a poor second round where he clearly gassed out against Akhmedov.

Vettori Wants To Whip Weidman’s Boring Ass

Vettori would count as such a fighter as he notably called the American out on social media.

“Weidman looked horrible tonight. He’s a former champion let me whip his boring ass next. Guarantee you he will hide like all the other guys. Me against @chrisweidman needs to happen.

“I swear I’ll have weidman begging me for air by the 2nd. Let’s book this!”

Vettori is on a three-fight winning streak after victories over Cezar Ferreira, Andrew Sanchez and Karl Roberson.

With Weidman highly likely to be ranked in the middleweight top 15, it would certainly be a fight that makes sense for the Italian.

The only question is if Weidman would be reciprocative.

The former middleweight champion Chris Weidman is gunning for the best at 185lbs after picking up his first win since 2017 against Omari Ahkmedov at UFC Vegas 6. Weidman utilized his wrestling skills to repeatably take his Russian opponent to the mat. The ‘All American’ appeared to fade in round two but rallied in the third to score his most dominant round of the fight. He was ultimately awarded the decision on all three judges’ scorecards.

Speaking to Paul Felder in his post-fight interview Weidman appeared relieved to snap his losing streak and get back in the win column, he said.

“It was huge, man. A lot of pressure on me and I’m happy to get my hand raised. I’m obviously not too happy with that performance but I needed a win. I got it done. I can’t be that mad.”

Weidman admitted his wrestling heavy attack was all part of the plan to get by Akhmedov who has looked dangerous on the feet throughout his UFC career.

“Gameplan was to get to his legs. Stop his initial movements and then get to my submissions and ground and pound. It was a good fight. Tough kid,” Weidman said.

The former champ concluded the chat by sending a warning to the top UFC middleweights, he said.

“I’m back, man. I’m back. I’m back at ’85. All the top-tier guys, I’m coming for you. I know this wasn’t the most outstanding win, but it’s me on the right page and that’s a problem for everyone.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)
