Former undisputed UFC middleweight champion, Chris Weidman has revealed he is still targeting an Octagon comeback despite suffering a catastrophic compound leg fracture in April of last year against Uriah Hall – explaining his plan to “inspire” others amid his continued road to recovery.

Weidman, who last competed professionally on the main card of UFC 261 back in April of last year, suffered a compound fracture of both his right tibia and fibula inside just 17 seconds of his VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena clash with Hall.

Undergoing a surgical procedure to address the gruesome leg fracture in Florida the following morning, Baldwin native, Weidman has maintained amid his continued layoff that he plans to make a triumphant return to the Octagon – recently offering to rematch fellow former champion, Luke Rockhold, if the Californian eyes a career comeback following his August retirement.

Chris Weidman details his plan to make a UFC return

Detailing his plan to return to the Octagon in the future most definitely, Weidman revealed how UFC broadcast partner, ESPN will detail his long road to recovery.

“Yeah, not yet,” Chris Weidman spoke of retiring from active competition during an appearance on Sirius XM. “At some point in my life, I will not be fighting. It’s that definitely but I am not backing down.”

“It’s not time yet,” Chris Weidman continued. “You know, I am excited to inspire people because what I’ve been through is definitely insane. I love that ESPN was able to capture it. And to be able to tell the story, come back and not just come back and be like, ah, he did alright. I want to come back and you know, make a real big scene. So yeah, I’m just – that’s it. I’m excited to do that.” (Transcribed by Middleeasy)

A former undisputed middleweight champion, Weidman dethroned Anderson Silva back in July 2013, before defending the title against the Brazilian in a rematch, and then launching successful title defenses against both Lyoto Machida, and Vitor Belfort

In his most recent professional victory, Weidman scored a unanimous decision win over Omari Akhmedov at UFC Vegas 6 in August 2020.

Chris Weidman is looking to make his return to fighting this year.

Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman has remained out of action since his last outing against Uriah Hall at UFC 261. Weidman snapped his shin just 17 seconds into the opening round. The horrific leg injury kept him on the sidelines for over a year following the incident in April 2021.

Now, a return seems closer than ever.

Chris Weidman is “hoping” to return this year

In an interview with MMA Fighting’s Mike Heck, Chris Weidman talked about how the last 15 months were for him in recovery. He expanded on the ESPN documentary that will come out later to show what he went through to make his comeback.

“Pretty damn sucky, it’s been very hard,” Weidman said. “Lots of ups and downs, a lot of issues and it just sucks I can’t put too much out there because I’m doing a documentary with ESPN, they’re doing an E60.

“So, they have the rights to everything, I can’t put out like me training or if I had really low spots where I had to get additional surgeries. I can’t put anything out there because they have the rights to it but it’s going to help them be able to tell the story in a great way.

“They’re going to market it as the worst injury of all time and coming back from that because once you guys all find out what I’ve had to go through over these last 15 months, it’s been a lot. I’m excited for them to be able to tell that story finally, and I’m excited to come back and shock the world.

“I’m hoping this year, yeah.”

Weidman will corner Anthony Smith

“The All-American” revealed that he will corner Anthony Smith in his upcoming bout with Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 277 on July 30 at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

“July 30th, I’m actually cornering Anthony Smith. I don’t think I told anybody that yet. He’s been coming down to South Carolina to train with me and help him get ready. He’s got that title eliminator fight with Ankalaev so I’m excited to try to get him ready for that.”

Former two-time UFC light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, has received a rather stark warning from a former promotional champion about the recent size and mass increase of former heavyweight kingpin, Stipe Miocic – with Chris Weidman claiming the Ohio favorite is walking around in the region of 250lbs.

Jones, a former two-time undisputed light heavyweight, is expected to return to the Octagon this year for the first time since February 2020, with a potential interim heavyweight title fight against Miocic floated in recent months, namely for a September pay-per-view card.

As for Miocic, the former two-time heavyweight champion has been out of action since March of last year, where he suffered a thunderous second round knockout loss to Francis Ngannou in the pair’s championship rematch.

Jon Jones has been warned to expect to share the Octagon with a stout Stipe Miocic

With the duo continually linked to a potential interim title fight before the close of the year, Weidman, a close friend of fellow former champion, Miocic, issued a warning to Jones regarding the size increase of the Ohio striker in recent months.

“I see Jon Jones really working to gain size and Stipe (Miocic) was smaller,” Chris Weidman told The Schmo. “I’ve trained with Stipe, he’s one of my boys, I was hanging out with him last night. Bro, he got big, and he’s been doing it quietly. He’s like a solid 250 (pounds) right now. Solid, 250, and whenever he decides to come back, he’s a problem.”

“I don’t think Jon Jones wants that fight,” Chris Weidman speculated. “If he thinks he’s gonna be going against a 225 pound Stipe, he’s wrong. He’s got a big, strong boy that won’t stop coming forward, and believes in himself, and (is) very well-rounded. He’s a different beast right now. I’m telling you.” (Transcribed by Bloody Elbow)

Seven years ago, MMA legend Renzo Gracie weighed in on the controversial topic of performance-enhancing drugs in MMA.

Fresh after Anderson Silva failed a drug test in connection to his 183 bout against Nick Diaz, Gracie took the time to weigh in on the topic.

According to Gracie, Silva was not the exception when it comes to steroid usage in the sport but was rather the rule. In fact, only two fighters came to mind when Gracie thought of who would serve as “exceptions.”

“Everybody is taking (steroids),” said Gracie to Brazilian media outlet Tatame. “The difference is that Anderson probably lost control of when the substance would be out of his body. Fighters who don’t use (PEDs) can’t compete in this sport. There are some exceptional guys, like Frankie Edgar and Chris Weidman. Those two never took anything. I watch them closely. Everybody takes (steroids), except them. But they are rare cases.”

“I don’t understand much about steroids, but I heard that substance is hard to catch,” Gracie continued. “For whatever reason, [Silva] was caught. I don’t know if he took it longer than he should. The problem with those things is that you develop an addiction, both physically and psychologically.”

Of course, the “Everyone is on steroids” take was later made famous by Nate Diaz. But these comments from years past illustrate that there are others who share Diaz’s cynical take on how their peers approach the sport.

What percentage of MMA fighters do you believe are on steroids? And do you think USADA has made a significant different on PED usage in the sport?
