Eddie Alvarez has dismissed Christian Lee who has claimed he is the best lightweight fighter in MMA.

The 22-year-old won the ONE Championship lightweight belt when he beat Shinya Aoki in 2019.

Lee has since gone on to defend the strap twice and also won the ONE Championship Lightweight Grand Prix.

In recent weeks the youngster has been bold during his conversations with the media, declaring himself the best lightweight fighter in MMA.

“I don’t want to come off as cocky, but I do feel that I’m the best lightweight fighter in the entire world,” Lee told Asian MMA. “And that doesn’t mean just ONE Championship, that means every organization.”

Alvarez is a man who has won major titles in Bellator and the UFC.

‘The Underground King’ has shared the cage with the majority of the world’s best lightweight.

So who better to ask about Christian Lee and his place among the best lightweight fighters in MMA.

“I think he’s well-rounded. He’s good, but no. The best in the whole world? No, he’s not,” Alvarez told LowKickMMA. “He’s not even the best in ONE Championship. If they just let me fight him. He’ll understand that and so will the promotion.”

Alvarez believes he is just one fight away from earning a shot at ONE Championship gold.

The 37-year-old is set to face Iluri Lapicus on April 7 and expects winning this fight will be enough to cement his shot.

“I think that’s it (after I beat Lapicus). I beat the former champion, two-time champion Eduard Folayang. Iluri Lapicus, he’s number two. I believe he is ranked number two and then that’s it. I feel like that’s it,” Alvarez said. “I don’t feel the need to prove myself. I’ve beaten so many champions throughout my career. I don’t’ know what we are waiting on. I don’t know what I have to prove more. I can beat the best guys in the world. Put me in front of your champion and I’ll beat him.”

A few weeks after Alvarez fights the ONE Championship lightweight title will be on the line when Lee squares off against Timofey Nastyukhin – the last man to beat Alvarez, who believes this fight could go either way.

“I think Christian’s style. The way he comes forward. I think he has to just play that style and if he plays that style, I think he’ll do a lot better,” Alvarez said. “Forcing into a wrestling, grappling match is his best chance. I think if he stands up and tries to play that game I think Timofey is going to put him away. Christian has that really high pace right from the beginning, right from the gate, grappling at that sort of pace. He’s going to have to force that on Timofey and get him tired and take away that explosiveness. It could go either way. It’s a matter of who comes out more focused and who imposes their style the most. I wish them both the best of luck.

Do you agree with Eddie Alvarez? Is Christian Lee overestimating his position among elite level lightweight fighters?

ONE Championship titleholder Christian Lee has declared himself the best lightweight fighter “in the entire world” ahead of his fight against Timofey Nastyukhin in April.

The 22-year-old impressively dethroned MMA legend Shinya Aoki in 2019.

Lee has since gone on to defend the ONE Championship strap on two occasions. The first came against Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev and saw Lee crowned the Grand Prix winner.

Next up, the youngster made a statement by knocking out Iuri Lapicus inside one round in October 2020.

ONE Championship’s lightweight division is at the 170lb weight limit, usually referred to as welterweight by the rest of the world.

In an interview with Asian MMA, Lee was adamant about his ability to compete with and beat any other lightweight fighter in MMA, he said.

“I don’t want to come off as cocky, but I do feel that I’m the best lightweight fighter in the entire world. And that doesn’t mean just ONE Championship, that means every organization.”

ONE Championship have just inked a deal with TNT that will allow their fighters to get more exposure in the United States, something Lee is very excited about.

“I think it’s great. I’m really excited that ONE has signed a deal with TNT. It’s great to see that ONE is finally breaking its way into the U.S. market, and I can tell my friends and family here in Hawaii to just turn on TNT and watch it in prime time.”

On the night Lee is expecting a tough fight with Nastyukhin who he has been impressed by.

“The thing about this fight that’s exciting for me is that Timofey is, in my opinion, one of the most dangerous athletes in the lightweight division and he’s taken out some of the best names in ONE so far. He’s definitely deserving of this title shot.”

The ONE Championship titleholder is also looking forward to an exciting fight due to the pairs respective fighting styles.

“Just the way our styles line up, he’s a finisher, I’m a finisher, and it’s going to make for a great, exciting fight for the fans,” Lee said.

ONE Championship lightweight titleholder Christian Lee is confident he would beat the 155lb champion in the UFC, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and any other elite level lightweight fighter.

Lee has looked sensational as of late. The 22-year-old has won five straight fights. In 2019 he stopped Shinya Aoki to become the youngest male world champion in MMA history. Since then he has picked up a unanimous decision win over Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev before he stopped Iuri Lapicus inside one round to defend his lightweight crown in October.

In an interview with MMA Mania, Lee declared himself the best 155lb fighter on the planet. The youngster noted the other organizations that boast top-level talent but insisted he would beat them all, he said.

“I believe I’m at the top. Of course there are many other organizations out there and many great fighters, but I believe in my skill set and I’m confident that if I go up against anyone I’m gonna come out on top.”

Lee even fancies his chances at current UFC pound-for-pound number one Khabib Nurmagomedov.

“I have a tremendous amount of respect for Khabib and if he is indeed retiring, there is no point in talking about a fight,” Lee said. “But I do feel like I have the skill set to beat him. Everyone who’s fought him in the past, they are good fighters, but predominantly strikers and weren’t ready to deal with his grappling and jiu-jitsu.”

“Khabib’s previous opponents just didn’t have enough depth in their ground game,” Lee continued. “With my wrestling and jiu-jitsu background, I feel that I would be more than capable of giving him a great fight and getting my hand raised.”

Former UFC and Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez is the standout name in ONE Championships lightweight division but Lee insists ‘The Underground King’ has work to do before they face off.

“I knew once Eddie joined the promotion that it was a fight I was going to have to take,” Lee said. “I do think he needs one or two more wins before we can make that happen, to get that title shot, but I’m looking forward to three title defences next year, I plan to stay busy.”
