Chuck Liddell further opens up about his latest performance which came against former fellow UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz. In the fight, Ortiz evaded almost every attack with ease before he stopped Liddell with a violent right hand. Since Liddell retired from the sport of MMA eight years ago, Ortiz fought nine times. After the fight, Ortiz made it known that he doesn’t think Liddell should have even accepted this fight.

Chuck Liddell On Reason He Came Back

Liddell recently issued a prepared statement on Instagram where he gave his reasoning as to why he decided to come out of retirement.

“These past few months for me were a lot more than a fight against Tito,” Liddell said (H/T to MMAJunkie). “It’s really been about my own personal journey and challenge. Martial arts has been my life for 36 years. I felt lost without it. It’s always kept me centered and helped me find my focus.

I wish the outcome of the fight was different. I never wanted to disappoint anyone or let anyone down. But this fight was more about pushing my limitations and getting me back to a place to find my purpose. And for that, I have no regrets.”

The former UFC light heavyweight champion also gave some motivational words to those who need it. More specially, those who are battling with self-doubt and mental/emotional hurdles.

“Even if no one else understands, know that everyone’s path is different,” Liddell said. “And you cannot achieve success without failure. To me, MMA is more than these wars in the cage. It’s about showing our fans how to live life like a true fighter and champion inside and outside of the cage. After all has been said and done, my calling is much bigger than this.”

At the end of the statement, he closed out his statement by stating that he wanted his supports to congratulate his former rival for his performance.

“In today’s world with so much hate, it’s important to show love and positivity,” Liddell said. “Tito, I wish you the best in your life and career. Congratulations on your victory.”

Report: Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz 3 Drew Poor PPV Buys

Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz 3 reportedly didn’t draw very well as the early estimates for this show have surfaced online.

The post Report: Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz 3 Drew Poor PPV Buys appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz 3 was an interesting show, to say the least, and didn’t match what was originally projected in terms of PPV buys. Over the weekend, inside The Forum in Inglewood, California on pay-per-view, Tito Ortiz was able to score a first round knockout victory over “The Iceman.” Obviously, this was not how the former UFC light heavyweight champion wanted this fight to go.

Prior to this fight, Liddell had already beaten Ortiz twice while under the UFC banner. However, he took the fight and it didn’t work out for him. Liddell and Ortiz have fought twice throughout their legendary careers, with “The Iceman” knocking out Ortiz at UFC 47 in 2004 and UFC 66 in 2006.

Originally, Oscar De La Hoya initially claimed 200,000-400,000 PPV buys was a “no-brainer” for this fight. However, that is not the case. It was reported by media members from LA Times and Yahoo! Sports that the PPV drew very poorly.

“Industry source tells me the Liddell-Ortiz PPV buys may be as low as 30,000. But the Tiger-Phil golf might reach 1 million (all refunded, but a glimpse of what a low price can generate).”

Coming into this fight, there was a mindset that this was a reality and that came true. It should be noted that non-UFC promotions have never really done well on pay-per-view. Also, this was built up as an original boxing event with there being a solid main event with no drawing power on the rest of the card.

The live gate was reportedly at $731,226, and PPV revenue would be at around $1-1.2 million at the $40 price point. The two fighters also got merchandise, sponsorships, any other international deals, and revenue sources. They received a base pay of $200k and $250k respectively.

Their Second Fight Drew Well

For those who are wondering, here is a comparison to their second fight that reportedly drew over a million buys back in 2006.

“If Tito & Liddell had the same deal back at UFC 66 as they reportedly both had with Golden Boy (30% each for Chuck/Tito & 40% for Golden Boy of the revenue) then they each would have earned almost $6.5 mil from ppv & gate alone back in 2006.”

Oscar De La Hoya fires back at UFC President Dana White over his recent criticism over the third fight between Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz. White went on record during a recent interview by calling De La Hoya a “f*cking cokehead.”

Ortiz was able to score a first round knockout victory over the former UFC light heavyweight champion this past weekend inside The Forum in Inglewood, California on pay-per-view.

It wasn’t the greatest performance by Liddell, who had not fought in eight years coming into this fight. Many people including White didn’t think that Liddell should be able to fight while he closes in on being 50 years old. De La Hoya sent out a statement in response (via MMAFighting.com) regarding the latest comments made by the UFC President.

“Dana is so small and threatened by our success with [streaming service DAZN] and now in MMA that he is bringing up news from a decade ago to try to stay relevant. Boxing has entirely rejected him. And MMA fighters are now realizing they don’t have to risk their lives just so he can get rich. Golden Boy and I are moving forward and are bigger than ever. Dana should shut the f*ck up and try to figure out how to save his own company.”

It will be interesting to see if Golden Boy Promotions continues to pursue their spot in the MMA landscape. Ortiz recently told ESPN’s Ariel Helwani that he will be having a meeting with De La Hoya later this week.

In order to find out what’s the next step for the promotion. He believes that De La Hoya is in the MMA business to stay. Time will tell whether that turns out to be true.

CSAC Executive Director opens up on the commission’s decision to even license the third fight between Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz. This fight is several days removed from when it took place but people are still talking about it. There was a certain expectation that most fight fans had when coming into it.

Liddell had been removed from the sport as an active pro-MMA fighter for several years. Ortiz on the flip side was more active and still winning fights. In fact, he beat Chael Sonnen at Bellator 170 by submission in his previous fight despite being past his prime.

Still, there were some unknowns coming into it despite the fact that they had fought each other twice. This event that was headlined by this trilogy fight featured the ugly and sometimes uncomfortable performance by Liddell. In the defense of the former UFC light heavyweight champion, most people didn’t know what version of “The Iceman” to expect.

California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) Executive Director, Andy Foster, licensed this fight to take place. Now, everyone is going after him for allowing this fight to take place.

“It’s hard to say it’s a mismatch when you’ve got two wins over the guy already,” Foster told MMA Fighting. “If you tell somebody as the executive officer, ‘Yeah, I don’t think you should be doing this even though you passed all your medicals,’ you’re basically telling that fighter, you can’t make a half a million dollars or however much he was making.”

Foster continued by stating that having the responsibility to tell somebody they can’t make a living is a big one. At the end of the day, he takes that seriously and looks at the fight game as a business.

“That’s a big responsibility to tell somebody they can’t make a living. I take that responsibility seriously. This is a business and profession, the fight game. If you pass all the medicals, the only thing left is, is the fight a mismatch? And I didn’t believe it was.”

Tito Ortiz fires back at those haters for criticizing his third and what appears to be the final fight against Chuck Liddell. The battle between the two former UFC light heavyweight champions took place over the weekend inside The Forum in Inglewood, California on pay-per-view. Ortiz beat Liddell by first round knockout. He finally got his revenge on his arch-rival. Although it didn’t take place under the UFC banner, it was promoted by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy MMA.

Following the fight, there have been fighters, media members, and fans criticizing this fight. Thus, this led to Ortiz taking to his official Instagram account where he not only reflected on the fight but defended it.

“I’ve had some time to think about this fight verse Chuck Liddell. How it came to be? This is something that Chuck wanted. I was ok doing my businesses. He called me out. Yes I agree and help make it happen with Golden Boy Boxing. I took this fight very serious that’s why I put in a 18 week camp. 3x a day, 6 days a week. I sacrificed everything. I was willing to put my life on the line.”

Ortiz broke down the circumstances heading into this fight.

“Having everyone saying why are you fighting Chuck again, he beat you twice? 1. He called me out 2. I always wanted redemption. 3. I’m here to prove my fans were right and the haters were wrong. 4. An opportunity to start a new organization that will take care of the fighters as they should be. I showed the world what hard work and dedication can get you.”

At the end of the day for the former UFC light heavyweight champion, he knew he was in a lose-lose situation. However, he pushed through and proved at the end of the day, he was the best fighter.

“I’ve never been so nervous before a fight like this one. But I knew I was ready. The mind games that Chuck was playing made me work harder. So thank you, Chuck. I was in a lose-lose situation but I was willing to gamble with my health. Chuck said he was ready, I knew I was ready, may the best fighter win. In this case it was me.”

I was willing to put my life on the line. One year ago I had 3 level disk replacement in my neck. Plus 7 other major surgeries since 2009. But was still willing to take a chance against someone who beat me twice before. There is not quit in me. I have made mistakes and I have learned from them. That’s life! I want to fail so I can learn to better myself. I have lived my life with ups and downs but at the end of the day I keep learning. I wish more people would. Chael Sonnen Critical Of Oscar De La Hoya Over Liddell vs. Ortiz 3 ‘Disaster’

Chael Sonnen is critical of boxing promoter Oscar De La Hoya for putting on the disaster fight between Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz.

Chael Sonnen critical of Oscar De La Hoya over what he calls a disaster regarding the third fight between Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz. The former title contender is known for his trash talk as much as his fighting skills as a pro-MMA fighter. He does have some history with Ortiz, who beat him by submission at Bellator 170 last year.

During a recent video that he pushed on his YouTube channel, Sonnen believes there is “a tremendous lesson” to be learned about the “disaster.”

“Oscar is not passionate about mixed martial arts. That was very clear and very obvious,” said Sonnen (H/T to MMAJunkie). “And when it comes to storytelling and building anticipation. You cannot just set up a ring, and the rest of it takes care of itself. I’ve heard fighters threaten that they were going to leave a promotion and start their own promotion. Go ahead. Go right ahead. That’s essentially what we saw here.”

As seen on Saturday night inside The Forum in Inglewood, California on pay-per-view, Ortiz was able to score a first round knockout victory over the former UFC light heavyweight champion.

Sonnen continued by stating that Oscar was never passionate about MMA. Thus, he needs to stay in his own lane, which is boxing, going forward.

“So, Chuck and Tito come together, go to Oscar, pitch him on an idea that Oscar was never passionate about, he was never behind, with a story that he simply did not know how to tell. It doesn’t make Oscar a bad promoter. The lesson to learn in this is: You got to stay in your lane.”
