Chael Sonnen is critical of boxing promoter Oscar De La Hoya for putting on the disaster fight between Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz.

Chael Sonnen critical of Oscar De La Hoya over what he calls a disaster regarding the third fight between Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz. The former title contender is known for his trash talk as much as his fighting skills as a pro-MMA fighter. He does have some history with Ortiz, who beat him by submission at Bellator 170 last year.

During a recent video that he pushed on his YouTube channel, Sonnen believes there is “a tremendous lesson” to be learned about the “disaster.”

“Oscar is not passionate about mixed martial arts. That was very clear and very obvious,” said Sonnen (H/T to MMAJunkie). “And when it comes to storytelling and building anticipation. You cannot just set up a ring, and the rest of it takes care of itself. I’ve heard fighters threaten that they were going to leave a promotion and start their own promotion. Go ahead. Go right ahead. That’s essentially what we saw here.”

As seen on Saturday night inside The Forum in Inglewood, California on pay-per-view, Ortiz was able to score a first round knockout victory over the former UFC light heavyweight champion.

Sonnen continued by stating that Oscar was never passionate about MMA. Thus, he needs to stay in his own lane, which is boxing, going forward.

“So, Chuck and Tito come together, go to Oscar, pitch him on an idea that Oscar was never passionate about, he was never behind, with a story that he simply did not know how to tell. It doesn’t make Oscar a bad promoter. The lesson to learn in this is: You got to stay in your lane.”

Tito Ortiz believes that there should’ve been something done in order to protect Chuck Liddell from himself. In fact, the former UFC light heavyweight champion thinks that Liddell’s manager should’ve told him not to do this fight.

As seen on Saturday night inside The Forum in Inglewood, California on pay-per-view, Tito Ortiz was able to score a first round knockout victory over arch-rival. Before this bout, Liddell and Ortiz had fought twice throughout their legendary careers, with “The Iceman” knocking out Ortiz at UFC 47 in 2004 and UFC 66 in 2006. Now, the standings see Liddell 2-1 against Ortiz.

In the fight, Ortiz evaded almost every attack with ease before he stopped Liddell with a violent right hand. Since Liddell retired from the sport of MMA seven years ago, Ortiz fought nine times. After the fight, Ortiz made it known that he doesn’t think Liddell should have even accepted this fight.

“If I was his manager, then no,” said Ortiz when asked he would have let Liddell sign on for the fight. “I would have told Chuck, ‘No, let’s get you an ambassador job. Let’s promote your name and get you to signings and do other means of making money.’”

Despite the bad blood between these two fighters, it appears that beef is over with. To the point that Ortiz doesn’t want to tell Liddell that he should go back into retirement.

“You can’t hold someone back,” said Ortiz (H/T to MMAFighting). “If they feel something they want to do and they want to fight and continue to fight, then you’ve go to let them walk out on their own. So, If he still wants to fight, then let’s find him an opponent. Let’s find him someone that isn’t a Tito Ortiz.”

“I don’t want to take anything away from Chuck. If wants to compete, then let him compete. Maybe not as a main event, of course. But let’s find him someone that’s a tune-up for him, because I’m not a tune-up fight.”

Chuck Liddell Noncommittal About His Future In MMA

Chuck Liddell hasn’t ruled out anything regarding his MMA future after suffering a loss to Tito Ortiz.

Chuck Liddell noncommittal about what his future holds in the world of MMA after suffering a defeat in his latest outing which came under the Golden Boy banner.

It’s rare in MMA that legendary fighters stick to their first retirements. There are several examples of that. Tito Ortiz retired after losing to Forrest Griffin a second time. But only to return to the sport two years later to join Bellator MMA. Georges St-Pierre couldn’t resist the pull of the cage and returned in November of 2017 to beat Michael Bisping.

It’s been well established by UFC President Dana White that he didn’t want to see Liddell fight anymore. The reason for that is seeing him be knocked out several times in the later part of his pro-MMA career. However, that didn’t mean that Liddell had no desire to fight again. Thus, when a big money offer came his way, he took it.

Chuck Liddell Won’t Comment On Retirement

As seen on Saturday night inside The Forum in Inglewood, California on pay-per-view, Ortiz was able to score a first round knockout victory. When talking with the media after the fight, the UFC light heavyweight champion isn’t ready to call it a career just yet.

“I don’t want to think about that right now,” Liddell told reporters at the post-fight press conference (H/T to MMAFighting). “I mean, I’m not in the right state of mind to really talk about whether or not I’m done or not. But I felt good out there and I had fun, so we’ll see.”

Liddell did promise that this loss made him want to stay in the gym for the foreseeable future. Whether that means to continue to fight or if it’s only in a supportive role.

“The one takeaway I have from this is that I will definitely be in a training camp again,” Liddell said. “I don’t know if it’ll be for me or for someone else, but I miss being in the gym and getting ready for a fight, or getting someone else ready for a fight. So I will now be more involved in training guys — at least training guys if not fighting, but for sure training guys.”

Tito Ortiz Opens Up On Burying Hatchet With Chuck Liddell

Tito Ortiz also commented on what his plans are after completing this trilogy fight.

Tito Ortiz opens up on finally being able to bury the hatchet with his arch-rival Chuck Liddell after fighting for the third time.

It appeared that Ortiz finished up his successful career when submitted Chael Sonnen at Bellator 170 last year. Prior to that, he had won two of his three previous fights. However, his retirement came into question when his fellow former UFC light heavyweight champion posted a picture to Instagram. Obviously, this led to the third fight being made.

As seen on Saturday night inside The Forum in Inglewood, California on pay-per-view, Ortiz was able to score a first round knockout victory over “The Iceman.” Following the fight, Ortiz hugged Liddell and called him “a real champ.” A classy moment between the two stars. Once speaking with the media after the fight, he decided to reflect on their friendship that turned into a rivalry.

“Yeah, I’ve buried the hatchet with Chuck 100 percent,” Ortiz said to MMAJunkie. “You guys got to understand: I’m a loyal person. I love my friends. I’m an aquarius to the tee. If you guys read horoscopes or so forth, read what an aquarius is.”

What’s Next For Tito Ortiz?

Although Ortiz wouldn’t confirm if he planned to fight again, he did confirm some plans that he has in mind. Those plans are to turn his attention Golden Boy’s Oscar De La Hoya to help create new fighters.

“You get that feeling of, ‘Is this the last one?’ I want it to be,” Ortiz said. “It’s a lot of pressure to impose your will on someone like that every single fight is really, really hard. There’s so much pressure to do that. And I’ve been doing it for 21 years. Now, if I just step out of that game.”

“Do it the right way of being a promoter and helping fighters, help them growing. And grow the next Tito Ortiz, grow the next Chuck Liddells, grow the next ‘Rampage’ Jacksons, Royce Gracies, Ken Shamrocks, Conor McGregors. And give them an opportunity to make the real money to make.”

Chuck Liddell issues a statement on his feelings about his latest fight that didn’t go according to plan as he prepared hard for this fight.

As seen on Saturday night inside The Forum in Inglewood, California on pay-per-view, Tito Ortiz was able to score a first round knockout victory over “The Iceman.” Obviously, this was not how the former UFC light heavyweight champion wanted this fight to go.

Coming into this fight, there was not much upside for Liddell except for just wanting to fight due to their history. Liddell had already beaten Ortiz twice while under the UFC banner. However, he took the fight and it didn’t work out for him.

Liddell and Ortiz have fought twice throughout their legendary careers, with “The Iceman” knocking out Ortiz at UFC 47 in 2004 and UFC 66 in 2006. Since that second fight, Liddell has lost six of his seven bouts with five of those losses coming via stoppage. He didn’t look the greatest in this third fight but did at least take the fight and step inside of the cage.

Following the fight, Liddell held his head up high and took to his official Instagram account to issue a statement. He wrote the following:

“Come home with your shield or on it! Train, live and fight like a warrior. I wish I had performed better tonight for all the incredible people who came to support me. I came up against all odds and I trained like a beast. My only regret is the friends and family that I wanted to win for. I love all of you!”
