Former light-heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell believes he would have matched up well with current 205lb king Jon Jones.

Liddell made the statement while undertaking a Q&A session on Twitter earlier this week. One fan asked ‘The Iceman’ which 205lb fighter he wished he had gotten the chance to face. Liddell picked current champ Jones and explained why he believes he would have caused him all kinds of problems during his peak years, he said.

“Jon Jones because I think I would have matched up well with him style wise. I would have given him trouble because it would have been very hard to take me down and I would have been landing some insane power punches during my prime. I also have a longer reach than my stats detail.”

Liddell won the UFC light-heavyweight title in 2005 and defended it four times. The 50-year-old former fighter holds signature wins over the likes of Wanderlei Silva, Tito Ortiz (twice), Randy Couture, Alistair Overeem and Vitor Belfort. He retired in 2010 before returning to the sport 8 years later to face bitter rival Ortiz in a trilogy fight. Unfortunately for Liddell he looked light-years past his prime and was stopped by Ortiz inside one round.

Jones is not only the current 205lb champion, he’s also seen by many as the greatest fighter who has ever lived. The 32-year-old has dominated the division for almost 10 years now. ‘Bones’ has beaten the light-heavyweight old guard like Shogun Rua, Rampage Jackson Lyoto Machida, Vitor Belfort and Rashad Evans. He is currently working his way through the current crop of fighters and has beaten Daniel Cormier, Alexander Gustafsson (twice), Anthony Smith, Thiago Santos and Dominick Reyes.

It’s clear Liddell and Jones are two of the best 205lb champions in UFC history. A fight between them will never take place but if it had I’m sure fans would have watched in their millions.

Do you think prime Chuck Liddell could have caused Jon Jones problems in a fight?

Former
light-heavyweight king Chuck Liddell has confirmed he is done with fighting in
MMA but says he would be interested in starting a career in professional
wrestling.

Speaking to TMZ Sports Liddell said he is retired “for now” and would like to explore opportunities in other sports should they present themselves.

“I’m officially
retired right now…for now,” said Liddell.

“I’d still do WWE. I’d
still do pro wrestling that would be a lot of fun. I’d like that.

“I’m impressed by the
stuff those guys do. They do some crazy stuff off the ropes you know.”

The 50-year-old first retired from MMA in 2010 after suffering three consecutive knockout defeats against Rashad Evans, Maurico ‘Shogun’ Rua and Rich Franklin.

Eight-years later he launched an unexpected and ill-advised comeback fight against long-time rival Tito Ortiz. The pair had met twice previously with ‘Iceman’ Liddell coming out victorious in both bouts.

Liddell scored the KO win in the first fight which took place at UFC 247 in 2004. Two years later he again took out Ortiz. This time getting the finish in round three to defend his light-heavyweight belt.

The trilogy fight was put on by Golden Boy Promotions who were making there first foray into mixed martial arts. Liddell – Ortiz III headlined the card that took place on November 24 2018 at The Forum in Inglewood, California.

In the fight Liddell looks stiff and every bit of his 48 years of age. The still active Ortiz secured a knockout win inside one round as many had expected he would.

Any further MMA comeback is surely off the cards after his last performance. Even if he wanted to no respectable promotion would sign Liddell and no moral governing body would license him.

Earlier this month, former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell caused quite the debate within the combat sports community.

“The Iceman” suggested in a recent interview with Ed Mylett that he would beat boxing heavyweight legend Mike Tyson in a streetfight. Here’s what Liddell had to say.

“In a street fight, I’d win,” Liddell told Ed Mylett. “I mean, he’s got a puncher’s chance. He’s got a chance to catch me coming in. But other than that, it’s over.”

Now, Liddell has taken to social media to double down on these claims, responding to fans on Twitter for his comments. Liddell clarified his comments were geared towards when he and Tyson were both in the prime of their fighting careers, not their current selves now.

Look 1) I’m talking about when we were fighting 2) I’d take him down so he’d have one shot on my way in 3) I’m a big fan of mike and have no desire to fight him. But hypothetically speaking, when we were fighting, yes I would’ve beat him!”

I remember Tyson and I’m a huge fan of his but I’m not sure why biting Holyfield’s ear off makes him a better street fighter or better at stopping takedowns?”

He won’t get three minutes I’d shoot right away. He had no ground training or takedown defense training at all. So he’d have to catch me on the way in or he’d never get off the ground period!”

Of course, Tyson’s days of fighting are long behind him, so there’s no true possibility of ever finding out what would happen. However, Liddell comes off a knockout loss to Tito Ortiz in a widely criticized trilogy bout between the pair that was put on by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy MMA promotion. Despite the vicious knockout loss, Liddell has still not definitively shut the door on fighting.

What do you think about Liddell’s comments regarding a street fight with Tyson?

Many within the mixed martial arts (MMA) community, including UFC president Dana White, want former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell to stop fighting.

However, Liddell still very much has a fighter’s spirit in him, and some fighting words as well. Speaking in an interview with Ed Mylett, Liddell was asked who would win in a street fight between himself and Mike Tyson. Liddell, of course, picked himself to win, but noted Tyson only had a “puncher’s chance” in a street fight scenario. (H/T MMA Mania)

“In a street fight, I’d win,” Liddell told Ed Mylett. “I mean, he’s got a puncher’s chance. He’s got a chance to catch me coming in. But other than that, it’s over.”

Liddell fought as recently as November of last year when he headlined Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions inaugural MMA event. He took on Tito Ortiz, who knocked Liddell out in devastating fashion in the first round.

With the loss, Liddell is on a four-fight losing streak and hasn’t won a fight since December of 2007. Despite this, Liddell still hasn’t officially shut the door on potentially fighting again. Speaking to TMZ earlier this month, UFC president Dana White talked about why Liddell shouldn’t be fighting anymore.

“Chuck Liddell is 50-years-old and should not be fighting. And he’s a grown man and can do whatever he wants to do, but let me tell you what. The commission who sanctions that fight… wow.” White continued.

“I love him, I respect him. The crazy thing is, all the reasons we love Chuck Liddell are the same reasons he wants to fight. To his core he’s a fighter, it’s what he loves to do, (but) that third fight should have never happened.”

Do you agree with Liddell that he would beat Mike Tyson in a street fight?
