Former undisputed UFC heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou has been left completely absent from the promotion’s standard ‘Countdown’ show ahead of their UFC 285 pay-per-view event this weekend – with the Cameroonian’s victory over event headliner, Ciryl Gane overlooked.
Ngannou, the promotion’s most recent heavyweight champion – undisputed or otherwise, departed the UFC back in January of this year officially, with the organization stripping him of his championship and waiving their period of exclusive matching, allowing him to immediately field offers from other promotions. Ngannou’s contractual obligations with the UFC completed on December 9. last.
In his final Octagon appearance, however, Ngannou headlined UFC 270 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California in January of last year in a title unification bout against then-interim titleholder, Gane.
Scoring a successful unanimous decision win over the Factory MMA Paris staple, Francis Ngannou would bow out of the organization subsequently in the midst of a six-fight winning streak.

And ahead of UFC 285 this weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada – the promotion detailed Gane’s interim title win over Derrick Lewis in their promotional ‘Countdown’ show, however, failed to name Ngannou as the victor or in any facet during their recollection of Gane’s title unification victory in January of last year.
Returning to winning ways in July of last year, Gane headlined UFC Fight Night Paris against Australian knockout artist, Tai Tuivasa, securing an eventual third round TKO victory.

Ahead of his Octagon comeback this weekend in the main event of UFC 285, former two-time undisputed light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones has questioned fan opinion of former interim heavyweight champion, Ciryl Gane, doubting the French striker is the most technically proficient kickboxer he has faced during his career.
Headlining this Saturday’s pay-per-view event in Las Vegas, Nevada, look-see-do veteran, Jones will snap a three-year hiatus from the sport in a vacant heavyweight title fight against Gane, marking his first Octagon walk since February 2020.
In his most recent outing, Jones, a former Jackson-Wink MMA staple headlined against Dominick Reyes in Houston, Texas – nabbing a close, debated unanimous decision victory to lodge his final light heavyweight championship defense.

And ahead of his return against Gane this weekend, Jones, who also narrowly defeated recent PFL (Professional Fighters League) acquisition, Thiago Santos during his second title reign, claims the Brazilian is a far more skilled striker than his upcoming foe.
“Man, I just finished watching my Thiago Santos fight again,” Jon Jones tweeted. “I think it’s crazy that you guys consider (Ciryl) Gane the most technical kickboxer I’ve ever faced. Everything Thiago did have bad intentions on it. Dude had lightening speed, power, explosiveness. (And) Crazy versatility.”
Whilst insisting ahead of UFC 285 how he is not looking past former interim titleholder, Gane, Jones admitted that he has one eye on a first attempt heavyweight title defense against former two-time division gold holder, Stipe Miocic.
“You know, Stipe Miocic would be a great challenge,” Jon Jones said. “Obviously, I’m not looking past Ciryl Gane – I’ve got a huge, huge order ahead of me. But Stipe Miocic is who I’ve got my eyes on. People consider him the greatest heavyweight of all time.”
“And the opportunity to compete against such a man, I’d be honored,” Jon Jones explained. “The opportunity to beat such a guy would be truly something special and that’s what I want to do. I want to solidify my legacy, and I know you have to fight the best guys out there. And as long as Stipe’s still in the game, that would be the next – that would be my next target.”

UFC president, Dana White has confirmed that a heavyweight fighter is in place to serve as a backup for next weekend’s vacant title fight between Jon Jones and Ciryl Gane at UFC 285, however, elected against revealing the name of the short notice replacement.
Slated to return to the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada next weekend for their UFC 285 pay-per-view card, the flagship event is slated to feature a vacant heavyweight title fight between former two-time light heavyweight titleholder, Jones, and former interim heavyweight champion, Gane, atop the card.

Dana White fails to reveal the identity of the UFC 285 headliner backup fighter
Revealing the organization will field a backup fighter at UFC 285, Dana White elected against, however, revealing just who that fighter will be.
“Is there a backup for the [UFC 285] main event? Yes,” Dana White told assembled media following UFC Vegas 70. “We always have backups for those kind of fights. I’m not gonna say it [who the backup fighter is]. But, yeah, we got a backup.”
Set to make his first Octagon walk in over three years, Rochester native, Jones has been sidelined since February 2020, where he headlined in Houston, Texas against then-challenger, Dominick Reyes, securing a close, debated decision win to defend his title. Jones would then officially relinquish the light heavyweight throne in August of that year.
As for Gane, the MMA Factory Paris stalwart headlined UFC Fight NIght Paris back in July of last year against heavyweight knockout artist, Tai Tuivasa, rebounding from his first professional loss with a third round TKO win over the Australian.
The most recent UFC heavyweight champion was Cameroon knockout puncher, Francis Ngannou, who was stripped of the undisputed crown in January after his contractual obligations with the promotion concluded back in December of last year.
