Ciryl Gane will carry the Olympic torch on June 4.

Seven weeks before the games officially kick off in Paris, France on July 26, the former UFC interim heavyweight world champion will carry the torch in his hometown of La Roche-sur-Yon.

“Proud to carry the flame,” Gane wrote in a translated post on Instagram. “Hoping to one day see MMA in an Olympic event.”

More than 10,000 athletes will converge on ‘The City of Light’ this summer vying for one of the most coveted prizes in all of competitive sports — an Olympic medal.

Kicking off on the final Friday in July, the opening ceremony will be held on the Seine River with boats representing each national delegation and traveling east to west, winding their way through the center of Paris where the athletes will compete for the following 16 days.

In addition to the athletes, the Olympic Games will play host to over 40,000 volunteers and 20,000 accredited journalists. The 329 scheduled events will emanate from 35 different venues, generating 350,000 hours of broadcast television. Millions of spectators will watch the festivities live from Paris while billions more will watch from their homes and mobile devices around the globe.

2024 Summer Olympics in Paris

The 2024 Summer Olympics debuts a new sport — but it’s not MMA

Of the 32 different sports on display, there will be one newcomer to the 2024 Games — Breaking.

Also known as break dancing, breaking is an urban dance style that became a staple of hip-hop culture in the 1970s. According to the official Olympics website, the event will feature “16 B-Boys and 16 B-Girls facing off in spectacular solo battles” all while improvising their moves to the beat of the DJ’s tracks.

2024 Summer Olympics in Paris

Breaking will be the only new sport introduced at this year’s games, but sport climbing, skateboarding, and surfing will make its return to the Olympics after debuting in Tokyo four years ago.

Unfortunately, mixed martial arts will not be part of the games, but many fight fans are holding out hope that the sport will one day grace the Olympic stage. For now, combat sports aficionados can enjoy karate, judo, wrestling, and boxing which have been a part of the summer spectacular for some time.

In 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) granted provisional recognition to sambo, kickboxing, and Muay Thai, though none of them will be making their debut in 2024. Perhaps we’ll see them at the 2028 games when the Olympics head to Los Angeles, Calif.

Amid links to a stunning comeback fight at UFC 304 in July, former interim heavyweight champion, Ciryl Gane has shared some new training footage as he finds himself tied to a long-anticipated showdown with Tom Aspinall.

Gane, the current number two ranked heavyweight challenger, has been sidelined from the Octagon since he headlined UFC Fight Night Paris back in September of last year, in his first fight since dropping a first round guillotine choke submission loss to Jon Jones in the pair’s vacant title fight last year to boot.

Turning in a one-sided victory against common-foe, Serghei Spivac, French favorite, Gane forced a second round TKO stoppage win at the fence, returning him to the winner’s enclosure and landing him a post-fight Performance of the Night bonus.

And linked with a comeback at a third UFC Paris event in September later this annum, former interim gold holder, Ciryl Gane has also found himself linked with a potential July return in Manchester, atop UFC 304 in a title fight against Atherton native, Aspinall.

However, despite links to a comeback fight against the British fan-favorite, reports have suggested Gane has already vetoed the idea of fighting on the Manchester card at the end of July, due to filming obligations as part of his role in an upcoming film.

And in the midst of fervour and talk regarding his fighting future, Gane has shared some new training footage, striking alongside his long-time head coach, Fernand Lopez in his native France.

As for Aspinall, the current interim heavyweight champion has confirmed his inclusion as part of a UFC 304 pay-per-view card in July in a return to Manchester, and has openly welcomed the chance to rematch prior foe and perennial contender, Curtis Blaydes in an attempt to avenge his sole professional defeat.

Tom Aspinall is planning to defend his interim heavyweight title on July 27 when the UFC returns to Manchester. We don’t yet know who it will be against, but it looks like we can already rule out Ciryl Gane.

On Tuesday, rumors began circulating that ‘Bon Gamin’ had rejected an offer to challenge Aspinall at UFC 304 because he would be busy shooting a movie this summer. Aspinall seemingly confirmed the rumor by asking his followers if anyone knew which film the ex-title challenger was set to appear in.

“Does anyone know which film Ciryl is filming?” Aspinall questioned on X.

A report from TalkSport revealed that a source “with knowledge of the situation” confirmed Gane turned down the opportunity to fight Aspinall this summer due to filming commitments.

It’s not the first time Ciryl Gane has been accused of ducking a fight with Tom Aspinall

It’s not the first time that Gane has been accused of turning down a fight with the UK-based heavyweight.

“He’s dismissed me on multiple occasions, and I’m not the first guy he’s dismissed,” Aspinall said about Gane during a recent appearance on The MMA Hour. I’m not the first guy that he’s ducked. It’s out there for people to see. The reason that I got the [Sergei] Pavlovich fight is because Ciryl didn’t want it. He ducked Pavlovich. He then ducked Curtis Blaydes. Curtis Blaydes has been on record saying that.

“I asked for him years ago. He didn’t want it then. Then I asked for him in Paris. They flew me over, we tried to make that fight. He didn’t want it then, and we’ll see what the UFC wants to do.”

Getting wind of Aspinall’s comments, Gane was quick to dispute the interim champ’s statement.

“Tom Aspinall, I never, ever say no to any challenge or any opponent,” Gane responded on social media. “Blaydes was never an option. They said Pavlovich, I said yes. Don’t worry, I’ll see you in September, stop tripping.”

The UFC is expected to return to Gane’s native France on September 28 for an event in Paris. Presumably, ‘Bon Gamin’ will be heavily featured on the card, but with the festivities going down a mere eight weeks after UFC 304, it’s unlikely that Tom Aspinall will be ready to go by then.

Former interim heavyweight champion, Ciryl Gane has offered to fight current interim titleholder, Tom Aspinall in a return to the Octagon atop a planned UFC Fight Night Paris card in September – denying claims he turned down fights against him, nor a clash with Russian contender, Sergei Pavlovich.

Gane, the current number two ranked heavyweight contender, has been sidelined since last September – most recently turning in a dominant second round knockout win over Serghei Spivac in the pair’s headliner.

Trotted out in his native France twice thus far since the promotion’s landing in the country, Gane had previously stopped Tai Tuivasa with a vicious knockout at the Accor Arena – before failing to land vacant gold in a heavyweight title fight against current champion, Jon Jones.

Weighing up his options ahead of a return to the Octagon this summer – potentially at a pay-per-view card in Manchester, Aspinall has welcomed the chance to fight Curtis Blaydes in a future interim title rematch, before claiming Gane had turned down multiple opportunities to fight him inside the Octagon.

Reacting to the Atherton native’s claims this week, Gane denied that suggestion, before offering to fight the Brit in a September return to the Octagon.

“I never say no to any challenge or any opponent,” Ciryl Gane posted on his official X account. “(Curtis) Blaydes was never an option. They [the UFC] said (Sergei) Pavlovich. I said yes. Don’t worry, I’ll see you in September. Stop tripping.”

Himself winning interim spoils last November at Madison Square Garden, Aspinall turned in a dominant first round KO win over the above-mentioned, Pavlovich – and has since chased a title unification bout, unsuccessfully, against the above-mentioned, Jones.

Tom Aspinall has accused Ciryl Gane of ducking multiple fighters, including himself.

Aspinall is heavily rumored to be part of the UFC’s yet-to-be-announced pay-per-view event in Manchester, England later this year. The UK-based star has been teasing his potential return, presumably to put his interim heavyweight title on the line against the only man to own a victory over him inside the Octagon, Curtis Blaydes.

Tom Aspinall and Curtis Blaydes

Appearing on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Aspinall shared some insight into his next fight — specifically who it would not be against. Asked if there’s any chance of him fighting undisputed champion Jon Jones or former two-time titleholder Stipe Miocic at the event, Aspinall was quick to rule them both out. When Ciryl Gane’s name popped up, Aspinall accused the Frenchman of ducking fights left and right.

“He’s dismissed me on multiple occasions and I’m not the first guy he’s dismissed,” Aspinall said. “I’m not the first guy that he’s ducked. It’s out there for people to see. The reason that I got the Pavlovich fight is because Ciryl didn’t want it. He ducked Pavlovich. He then ducked Curtis Blaydes. Blaydes has been on record saying that. I asked for him years ago. Ciryl Gane has come up short in two UFC title opportunities

‘Bon Gamin’ has won six of his last eight fights with his two losses during that run coming in title fights against former champion Francis Ngannou and current heavyweight king Jon Jones. After coming up short against ‘Bones’ at UFC 285, Gane bounced back with a big second-round knockout over Serghei Spivac at UFC Paris in September. Gane still sits as the No. 2 ranked contender in the heavyweight division.

Gane vs. Spivac

After winning the interim belt in November, Tom Aspinall lobbied hard for a title unification clash with Jon Jones, even going so far as to approach ‘Bones’ at one of the undisputed champ’s promotional appearances. Unfortunately, that fight is looking less likely with each passing day.

As a result, Aspinall has opted to move on from Jones and will look to score a bit of redemption against Curtis Blaydes.

Tom Aspinall scoffs at Ciryl Gane call out as soon as I get the title he wants to fight me UFC

Newly-minted interim heavyweight champion, Tom Aspinall has labelled a recent call out from former interim gold holder, Ciryl Gane “ironic” – claiming the Frenchman has now only wants to fight him, since he landed the interim title last month at UFC 295.

Aspinall, the current interim heavyweight titleholder, co-headlined UFC 295 at the beginning of last month at Madison Square Garden, landing the interim crown with a spectacular opening round knockout win over Russian striking phenom, Sergei Pavlovich in the pair’s interim title affair.

As for Gane, the former interim heavyweight champion headlined UFC Fight Night Paris back in September, retaining the number two rank in the division with a blistering TKO win over Moldovan common-foe, Sergei Spivak.

Tom Aspinall comments on Ciryl Gane fight

And receiving a recent call out from the Frenchman following his interim title success against Pavlovich, the above-mentioned, Atherton native, Aspinall has claimed it’s now “ironic” how Gane wants to challenge him, only since he landed interim spoils.

“It’s pretty ironic, he (Ciryl Gane) loves trying to do the most little amount of work to get the biggest rewards possible,” Tom Aspinall told Mirror Fighting. “I understand, because I do as well but it’s very strange that I called him out for a long time and then as soon as I get the title he wants to fight me. We’ll see what happens, we are going to fight each other one day so it’s all good.”

“I think every fight is a tough fight at the minute,” Tom Aspinall explained. “If you look at the rankings, I am ranked number one in the world but if you are top 10 in the world, you are really, really good. We can all beat each other on any given day. There is not that much between us all, we have tiny gloves and are massive guys. Anything can happen at anytime.”
