Top women’s strawweight contender Claudia Gadelha (14-2) entered her bout with Cortney Casey (6-4) coming off a loss to 115-pound ruler Joanna Jedrzejczyk. “Cast Iron” looked to shock the world by defeating Gadelha in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The upset was not meant to be, although disaster from an illegal kick in the final round could’ve changed that.

An overhand right found the mark for Gadelha early in the opening stanza. Casey landed a punch as Gadelha rushed in. Casey pushed her opponent against the fence. She landed a knee to the body, but Gadelha reversed the position. A right hand hit the chin of Casey. Gadelha ducked under a right hand and scored a big takedown. The Brazilian went for a heel hook, but thought better of it. The two stood back up. Casey completed a judo throw, but she rolled allowing Gadelha to end the round in top control.

Casey went for a clinch in the second round, but Gadelha reversed it and landed an elbow and some punches on the break. Casey’s blocked head kick allowed her to disrupt Gadelha’s offense momentarily. Gadelha kept punching her way out of the clinch. “Cast Iron” was taken down. The two returned to the feet. Casey got overly aggressive and was dumped back down as a result. Like in the first round, this one ended with Gadelha in control.

Gadelha dumped Casey down the mat with over a minute into the final frame. With Casey down looked to go for a leg, Gadelha landed an illegal head kick. Casey slowly made her way to her feet. Replays appeared to show the foot grazed the ponytail of Casey. The action resumed without a point deduction to the dismay of commentator Brian Stann. A right hand landed for Gadelha. She stung her opponent with two left hooks. Gadelha took Casey down, but she decided to stand back up. The two exchanged punches. The fight ended with Gadelha going for an arm triangle.

Final Result: Claudia Gadelha def. Cortney Casey via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Claudia Gadelha was 12-0 when she met Joanna Jedrzejczyk in 2014, falling via split decision.

The Brazilian rebounded with a decision win over Jessica Aguilar in 2015, earning herself a rematch with the UFC strawweight champion. Gadelha dropped that contest and will once again try to work her way back up the ladder starting Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 100 vs. Cortney Casey.

Prior to the fight, Gadelha moved to Jackson-Wink MMA in New Mexico for her training.

“I transformed myself into a new athlete, much more focused on what I need to do,” she said. “The time I spent in the United States taught me the right way to train and I feel very good about my body and my health.”

Gadelha knows she is the favorite and expected to do big things in front of her country, but the 27-year-old is not taking Casey for granted.

“Cortney is a very big and strong girl for the division and I believe that she will use that as an advantage over me,” Gadelha said. “I can’t stop in front of her, I have to impose my game and that is what is going to happen. I can guarantee that it will be an MMA fight, everything will happen.”

Claudia Gadelha will no longer be representing the Nova Uniao gym.

According to a report from Combate, the former strawweight title challenger was upset with head-coach Andre Pederneiras following her unsuccessful attempt at challenging for the title when she suffered a unanimous decision loss to current champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk earlier this year.

Gadelha was reportedly upset with the way her training camp for the title bout was handled within the camp, and was vocal about her concerns which sparked anger from the gym’s head-coach Pederneiras and led to a verbal argument between the two over the phone.

Due to the friction between the two Brazilians, Gadelha made the decision to start her own gym, Claudia Gadelha’s MMA & BJJ Academy, which is located in Pennsylvania.

For her next contest (which has yet to be scheduled), however, Gadelha will be training at original Nova Uniao branch gym Kimura Nova Uniao in Natal, Brazil. There she will join fellow combatants Renan Barao and Jussier Formiga under the tutelage of head coach Jair Lourenco.

I saw somewhere that we were provided almost 12 full hours of UFC action in July.

And that’s not including commercials, features, promos and other “in-between” filler.

Just in terms of total fight, in-Octagon time.

Almost 12 full hours.

Incredible.

But with all that, there was plenty of boring, slow-moving action that we had to sit through.

Let’s not relive those bouts and instead focus on the more memorable ones. Feel free to sound off on what you feel like were the “Fight,” “Knockout” and “Submission of the Month” from July in the UFC.

FIGHT OF THE MONTH

For me, this came down to the strawweight division.

Karolina Kowalkiewicz and Rose Namajunas earned “Fight of the Night” honors at UFC 201 for their three-round decision that ultimately went to the unbeaten Polish fighter, but they fell just short in this category for the month.

That honor belongs to champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Claudia Gadelha who battled for 25 minutes over the belt. Jedrzejczyk was the winner on that night, as the two also claimed “Fight of the Night” status.

Next up we just might get to see the two winners square off – and maybe even in Poland to boot.

KNOCKOUT OF THE MONTH

There were some mighty fine choices for this award, as well, but the one finish that still sticks with me came from Eddie Alvarez.

The former Bellator champion was viewed as an underdog against Rafael dos Anjos when they met for the UFC lightweight strap, but somebody forgot to tell Alvarez that.

He came out guns-blazing vs. RDA and finished him with an incredible flurry of shots. It was hard not to get emotional listening to Alvarez discuss his delayed move to the UFC and how he almost gave up on fighting because of it.

Tyron Woodley’s knockout of Robbie Lawler and John Lineker’s finish of Michael McDonald were also right there.

SUBMISSION OF THE MONTH

This was the easiest of the three.

Amanda Nunes pulled a Holly Holm against Miesha Tate, stunning the masses and submitting the female bantamweight champion in the main event of UFC 200.

For Nunes, it was an incredible moment that thrust her into the spotlight of the sport.

The Brazilian dominated Tate, who struggled to make weight the day before, leaving her a bloody mess with a broken nose and no title to take home.
