Amanda Nunes destroyed Ronda Rousey at UFC 207, now she’s going after coach Edmond…

Following one year’s absence from the sport, Ronda Rousey returned to attempt her big comeback at UFC 207. Facing the reigning champion Amanda Nunes, predictions for Rousey’s return fight were divided. Unfortunately for ‘Rowdy’ and her fans, the ex-champion came a cropper early on. Essentially making it look easy, ‘The Lioness’ battered Rousey for 48 seconds straight. Turning the tables on the formerly dominant Rousey, it was Nunes who walked away with a sub-minute finish.

Obviously the time away from MMA did not serve Rousey well, but her performance again raises old questions. Returning to Glendale and her coach Edmond Tarverdyan for the UFC 207 fight camp, should Rousey have switched things up? Having already been cast in to the spotlight before and after UFC 193, coach Edmond’s credentials have been debated intensely.

Amanda Nunes Blames Coach Edmond

Even with the assistance of an Olympic boxer in her latest camp, Rousey looked lost in the octagon with Nunes. Only after being rocked many times did she attempt a clinch, and by that time it was far too late. Speaking out about ‘Rowdy’s’ coach, the champ says she feels Edmond Tarverdyan is bad news. As per MMAFighting.com:

“I knew [Rousey] was going to strike with me, because she thinks it because her boxing coach told her she has good striking,” Nunes said. “I knew she was going to strike a little bit with me, but when I started to connect with some punches I knew she would want to start to clinch with me.”

“Yeah, because she thinks that she’s a boxer, you know?” she said. “He like put this thing in her head and make the girl believe in that. I don’t know why he did that. She had great judo, and she can go far in this division, but he put some crazy thing about boxing, and her career started to go down. And if I win that, I am the real striker. This is the only thing I wanted to look at him, to say it.”

20/20 Hindsight?

Looking back over Ronda Rousey’s career, it’s hard to deny her incredible influence on the sport. Dd her career begin steadily sliding after she joined forces with Edmond Tarverdyan? Possibly not, but it certainly did when she decided to start striking against far superior boxers. Was this a result of coach Edmond’s illustrious stand up training? That’s another argument to be had, for now, respect to Rousey for her storied career. Props to Nunes for putting on a dominant performance.

Stay tuned as the debate on coach Edmond will continue…

Ronda Rousey’s boxing has become a point of much debate over the last 12 months. Ever since her devastating loss to Holly Holm at UFC 193, fans and media have discussed both the possibility of changing camps, and the impact of training with Edmond Tarverdyan. Rousey’s own mother accused coach Edmond of being a ‘fraud’ right before her loss to Holm. Dr. Ann Maria De Mars actually predicted ‘Rowdy’s’ fight with Holm near-perfectly, claiming her training with ‘scumbag’ Tarverdyan would lead to false confidence and a big failure.

After receiving a brutal knockout last November, it was unclear as to whether Rousey would come back. During her year away from fighting, Rousey has still been working on her stand up. Sparring Olympic boxer Mikaela Mayer for her upcoming return against Amanda Nunes, ‘Rowdy’ clearly wants to develop her striking.

Was It Coach Edmond?

Pictured above is the contrasting character coach Edmond Tarverdyan, the man who famously told ‘Rowdy’ she won the first round against Holly Holm. One boxing trainer who certainly knows how to tune UFC fighters hands is Ricky Perez, boxing coach to the Diaz brothers Nick and Nate. Speaking with BJPenn.com Radio, as quoted by BloodyElbow.com, Perez reveals he actually worked with Rousey before. He says that during their time together, Rousey claimed she’d never experienced boxing training like that before:

“You know to be honest with you, I don’t know how she is being trained over there [at Glendale Fighting Club]. I know I trained her for a couple fights before and she did really good,” Perez recalled. “I mean I trained her really hard, she loved it. She said she never had anybody train her like I did. You know, I don’t know what they do over there so I can’t give an answer on how it’s gonna come out.”

Perez’s Advice

With a huge comeback fight against Amanda Nunes looming at UFC 207, Perez gives his opinion on how Rousey should approach the fight:

“When she fought Holly, she came out the wrong way,” he continued. “She came out forward, throwing and swinging and not paying attention, not trying to take her down real hard. She just didn’t set anything up. I don’t know what happened. I don’t know, maybe the training camp was good and she starts thinking. Like when I said, when a fighter gets in there, sometimes they change their mind. Once they get in there they think, ‘OK, I can do this.’ I don’t know.”

“I would definitely tell her don’t make the mistake that you did last time. Go out there forward and just focus on one thing. Be sharp, make her miss, move around, you know cause Nunes is gonna be a striker. Ronda has to focus on throwing good strikes but yet trying to shoot on her at the same time. It’s all about timing.”

Recent training footage of Rousey would suggest she’s ironed out quite a few kinks in her striking game:

OK, so not to the standard of a world-class boxer, but consider this; Here’s a compilation of how Ronda Rousey’s boxing looked as recently as UFC 190 last year:

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey is back in the game. After being crushed by Holly Holm’s iconic head kick at UFC 193, ‘Rowdy’ will attempt to win back the belt she once held with conviction. Facing Amanda Nunes at UFC 207, Rousey will have a very hard road to redemption. Whether or not she’ll get that UFC gold again remains to be seen, but there’s plenty of time for reflection before December 30. Particularly interesting in regards to her last fight-Ronda Rousey’s striking game.

Taking on a world champion boxer and kickboxer was never going to be easy for Ronda Rousey. Expecting o come in and bull rush such a seasoned striker was clearly not a good idea, though. Taking her time and capitalizing on the frequent mistakes made by Rousey in Melbourne, Holm put on a striking clinic. Rousey’s performance that night led to many questions about her training. Perhaps it was just an off-night, or maybe there was more to it. Inevitably Edmond Tarverdyan, Rousey’s coach, was put under the spotlight.

Coach Edmond

We’ve all seen the videos of Ronda Rousey’s shadow boxing, and the fruits of her labour at UFC 193. Continuing her training with Edmond Tarverdyan for her return, Rousey’s loyalty to the somewhat controversial coach will either pay dividends or end in disaster, again. Without dwelling too much on what either did right or wrong, it pays to remember the former Olympic Judoka came to MMA with no stand up striking whatsoever.

Following the announcement of Ronda Rousey’s long-awaited return to the octagon, UFC commentator Joe Rogan discusses the influence of Edmond Tarverdyan on her striking game. Here’s what Rogan had to say during his most recent podcast episode:

RoganRousey1

Joe Rogan on Coach Edmond

“Ronda can do whatever she wants to do. I don’t know what was going on in her head that night, but for her to take a year off to recover is fine. She also had a bunch of injuries too. Whether or not that guy Edmond has had success with his students, you can’t deny that he has worked wonders with her hands. When they were warming up for that Bethe Correia fight, and they were doing pad drills, she looked fantastic.”

“There’s no denying there’s some merit to what he does, unquestionably. You’d have to examine the whole camp. You have a world-class championship race horse in Ronda Rousey. You have to ask yourself, what is the best course for a girl like this. Technically, what are we trying to achieve? Everyone does it differently, some people say you don’t spar and you only do drills-that’s what Donald Cerrone has been doing. Eddie Alvarez does hundreds of rounds sparring in preparation for Rafael dos Anjos.”

“Before Holly knocked out Ronda, I said I thought Holly needed some more fights. I said I thought Amanda (Nunes) was the more dangerous fight, she’s scary. Everybody is talking about Cyborg (fighting Rousey). The thing is she just drains herself even to make 140 pounds. They should just give her a 145-pound division, give her the featherweight belt. She’s a destroyer, she’s so terrifying. That’s the 145-pound champion. I wonder if there’s a 155-pound division to be had? I think she walks around at 170-something.”

It’s certainly been a very eventful year for the UFC. The world’s largest mixed martial arts promotion has put on a number of huge shows, reportedly breaking the pay-per-view buys record that’s stood since UFC 100. Perhaps the most bizarre show in UFC history went down on September 10, 2016 in Cleveland, Ohio. UFC 203 featured a host of well-known fighters, but it was truly a heavyweight focused event. Following the success of UFC 202 just 20 days before, all eyes were on the big guys at UFC 203.

Also present during the wild show in Ohio was WWE veteran CM Punk, who made half a million dollars while getting whooped by Mickey Gall. An elevator accident struck CB Dollaway from the card just 24 hours before it started, and a number of other odd incidents made it a very unique fight week in Cleveland. The weird occurrences did not stop though, as the event itself saw some twists and turns like very few others before. The most notable moments of the evening outside the main event came from Fabricio Werdum vs. Travis Browne (and his coach).

Fabricio Werdum

Werdum vs. Everyone

The intense heavyweight showdown between ex-champ Werdum and his rival Travis Browne started just as it would finish. ‘Vai Cavalo’ opened round one with an acrobatic jumping head kick that wobbled ‘Hapa.’ As the fight went on it was clear that Browne was outgunned, then came the infamous time out. An overhand right from Werdum landed on Browne’s finger causing a compound fracture. In what should have technically been a TKO according to the rules, the referee accepted Browne’s call for time out.

After some inspection by the doctors, the fight got back underway. Werdum took home the judge’s decision in his second win over Browne, but the fight didn’t end after the final bell. ‘Vai Cavalo’ got in to it with Travis Browne’s coach Edmond Tarverdyan. In what appeared to be an adrenaline fuelled skirmish, Werdum landed a front kick to the chest of Ronda Rousey’s famed trainer. The ex-champion would later reveal that coach Edmond had verbally abused him before their physical altercation.

During his fight companion for UFC Fight Night 94 last night, color commentator Joe Rogan revealed exactly what he saw during the altercation:

Rogan

“Werdum with that insane flying kick, then the ‘this is Sparta on Edmond after the fight. I think there was a lot of pressure on Browne and his coaches. I didn’t see the kick, but when I climbed in the octagon I saw Werdum’s coach. Rafael Cordeiro was ready to throw down, he was ready to throw punches. I think he (Cordeiro) was considering what to do in that moment.”

Brendan Schaub

“Werdum was like ‘Get the f*ck outta here with your bullsh*t gym. Browne has looked like sh*t since joining Glendale, and I think the pressure was on Edmond. You could hear him in between rounds, his voice was desperate.”
