The first attempted flyweight title defence of champion, Deiveson Figueiredo has fallen to the wayside.

The Brazilian submission and knockout threat was slated to headline UFC 255 opposite divisional newcomer, one-time bantamweight world champion, Cody Garbrandt, however that pairing is now off the cards.

Suffering a torn bicep on Monday, Mark Henry mover, Garbrandt is out of the event’s curtain-closer – with the organization now attempting to link Figueiredo with streaking contender, Alex Perez for the November pay-per-view. News of Garbrandt’s removal and the promotion’s plans to slot Perez in his place was initially reported by Combate reporters, Marcelo Barone and Raphael Marinho

Scoring the vacant flyweight throne at the second time of asking, Figueiredo managed a first-round rear-naked choke win over multiple time championship challenger, Joseph Benavidez in July at a UFC Fight Night event on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Figueiredo had secured a knockout win over Texas native, Benavidez in March at UFC Fight Night Norfolk – but tipped the flyweight scales before the pairing, leaving him ineligible to claim the championship with a win.

Ohio born knockout ace, Garbrandt displayed a much more patient and composed gameplan opposite Raphael Assuncao at UFC 250 in June to score a Knockout of the Year shoo-in with a klaxon besing second-round overhand. Prior to the win, Garbrandt had dropped three consecutive defeats via strikes against Pedro Munhoz, and former Team Alpha MMA teammate, T.J. Dillashaw (x2).

For 29-year-old California born all-rounder, Perez – the streaking Colin Oyama student has won three on the trot. Rounding off his winning run, the Dana White’s Contenders Series product scored a highlight first-round leg kick finish of perennial flyweight challenger, Jussier Formiga also at the above noted UFC 250 event.

With the promotion’s plans to keep Figueiredo on the card opposite Perez, the pairing looks to round off a night of flyweight championship callings, as 125-pound queen, Valentina Shevchenko attempts to continue her dominant reign as she welcomes Figueiredo’s compatriot, former Invicta FC best, Jennifer Maia in the night’s co-headliner.

Cody Garbrandt has reportedly tested positive for COVID-19.

AG Fight was first to report the positive test. The former bantamweight champion tested positive earlier this week and is at home quarantining awaiting the results of his latest test. He also didn’t have any major symptoms other than a headache according to the report.

The good news is that Garbrandt should overcome the virus and he did not suffer from any major conditions. The outlet also reports his fight against Deiveson Figueiredo for the flyweight title at UFC 255 is still on. It was a fight Garbrandt called for as he believes he can have a lot of success in the scrap.

“I think he’s a great fighter,” Garbrandt said to ESPN. “He’s tough. Everyone is tough in the UFC. He has a lot of holes I’ll be able to tackle and see. Joe hurt him a lot in the first fight. He’s got good submission skills, good jiu-jitsu, but my wrestling and jiu-jitsu (are) probably overlooked a lot of the time because I never have to use (them).

“I feel very confident wherever the fight goes, I can dictate the pace or where I want to put it. I think he gasses a lot. I’ve been in 25-minute fights with some of the best in the world so I feel like my gas tank and cardio and conditioning will never be a problem for me.”

Cody Garbrandt returned to the win column back at UFC 250 with a knockout win over Raphael Assuncao. Before that, he suffered a knockout loss to Pedro Munhoz and back-to-back KO losses to T.J. Dillashaw to lose his bantamweight title.

Deiveson Figueiredo, meanwhile, submitted Joseph Benavidez on Fight Island to win the flyweight title. Before that, he knocked out Benavidez but missed weight so the belt was still vacant.

Who do you think will win, Deiveson Figueiredo or Cody Garbrandt?

Cody Garbrandt is happy Aljamain Sterling is getting the next bantamweight title shot.

Ever since Petr Yan became the new bantamweight champion at UFC 251, Sterling has been vocal of getting the next title shot. He no doubt deserved it as his UFC 250 scrap against Cory Sandhagen was set to be a number one contender bout.

Unfortunately, Dana White was reluctant to give Sterling the shot. When he wouldn’t confirm Sterling, many thought Cody Garbrandt would get the next shot. But, with “No Love” moving down to flyweight it paved the way for “Funkmaster” to get the shot.

“Yeah,” UFC president Dana White responded at the post-fight press conference when asked if Sterling sis next.

During the post-fight show earlier in the night, White wouldn’t give a for sure answer but says it is likely.

“I’m pretty sure it’s [going to be], it’s more than likely going to be Sterling,” White added.

With Sterling likely to get the next shot, Garbrandt is happy about it.

“Good so we can stop seeing him beg for it… that shit was blowing up my time line,” Garbrandt wrote.

Aljamain Sterling is currently on a five-fight winning streak. Last time out he submitted Sandhagen to become the top contender. Before that, he had decision wins over Pedro Munhoz and Jimmie Rivera after submitting Cody Stamann and getting a win over Brett Johns.

Petr Yan, meanwhile, is undefeated in the UFC and coming off a TKO win over Jose Aldo. During his run he also has wins over Rivera and John Dodson.

There is no question Aljamain Sterling deserves the next shot at bantamweight. When the fight would take place is uncertain. But, a scrap between Sterling and Yan is a very intriguing one with a path to victory for both men.

Who do you think wins, Petr Yan or Aljamain Sterling?
