Following a recent interview where UFC Flyweight champion Dieveson Figueiredo stated Cody Garbrandt would have to prove himself before getting an immediate Flyweight title shot, Garbrant took to twitter firing back at the newly crowned champion.

“He is only interested in a fight with me to see if I can make flyweight prior?? When his fat ass couldn’t Make his own weight class in his first title shot??”

Figueiredo had his first shot at UFC gold in February against Joseph Benavidez in a fight he won, however, he was unable to claim the title as he missed weight and was therefore made ineligible.

After the first fight, a rematch was made for the Undisputed title in which Figueiredo won in devastating fashion. Figueiredo has had a target on his back since since the victory earlier this year that saw him become the champion.

Since then former Bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt has voiced his desire to drop in weight and challenge for the Flyweight title, however, Figueiredo recently spoke in an interview with MMA Fighting stating that Garbrandt will not get an immediate title shot.

“We want him to prove he can make 125 pounds and fight someone in my weight class,” Figueiredo said. “After that, if he wins, he can come fight me. But we don’t agree with him coming down and skipping the line and going straight for the belt against me. He needs to prove he can make 125 and fight someone. It would be unfair if the UFC puts him straight for the belt. I think the UFC has to respect the others that worked hard for a title shot.”

Currently the UFC has not shared any plans for either fighter, Figueiredo stating that he believes Brandon Moreno or Askar Askarov would be a great fight for his first title defence.

“I think Brandon Moreno would be a great fight, or even [Askarov],” Figueiredo said. “It’s up to the UFC to decide which one is next. I guarantee you I can tell you right now what would happen.”

Cody Garbrandt and Sean O’Malley continue to build up a potential fight in the future.

It all started with O’Malley recently mocking Garbrandt’s intentions of dropping down to the flyweight division to fight new champion Deiveson Figueiredo.

Garbrandt was naturally not going to let that slide as he responded soon after.

“Don’t worry kid I’ll be running both divisions by 2021 hopefully by that time you’ll fight someone in the top 15….”

The back-and-forth continued from thereon out.

“I hope you don’t get knocked out at strawweight because it won’t look as good when I knock you out. Good luck.”

“Hopefully you don’t have to get carried out of the cage like a b*tch again… good luck ??

“Lolz my foot snapped champ.”

O’Malley ended things with one final message.

“You ain’t chasing greatness you are running from it.”

Garbrandt vs. O’Malley Rivalry Began After UFC 250

The rivalry between the pair started at UFC 250 in June following their impressive knockouts on the night that both received performance bonuses.

As both fighters debated as to whose knockout was better, it eventually led to trash talk between each other which has only continued since.

It will likely be a bit of time before we see them fight, but hopefully we do get to see it happen one day.

What do you make of Garbrandt and O’Malley’s online beef?

Petr Yan

UFC bantamweight champion Petr Yan was not happy to hear former 135lb king Cody Garbrandt wants to move down to flyweight to challenge Deiveson Figueiredo rather than face him for the bantamweight belt. Speaking to ESPN on Monday Garbrandt revealed he is currently in line for a shot at Yan but is leaning towards dropping 10lbs to compete at flyweight instead, he said.

“As far as I know [I’m the No. 1 contender], I don’t have a contract in hand,” Garbrandt said. “We’re trying to wait on that with Ali [Abdelaziz] and Dana and Sean [Shelby] and Mick [Maynard]. I’ve actually been vocal about going to 125 for quite some time now. We spoke about it in the past before the Assuncao fight and I feel like it’s great. I’m able to do it now, early still in my career. I just turned 29. I’m able to go to 125, challenge and win that title there, and then go back up to 135 pounds and compete with the best of them there.

“I feel like it’s a time in my life and my career where it’s very pivotal for me to make this transition into flyweight and bantamweight,” Garbrandt added. “I don’t think a lot of the flyweight guys could come up to bantamweight and compete at the elite level that I am, so I’m very blessed I’m able to do that. So yeah, hopefully I get this shot against Figueroa, Figueiredo – whatever his name is. Great guy. I think that he’s a tough, tough competitor, I just think that I’m way more skillful than him and excited for the challenge at task. Hopefully we’ll get it done and I can get in the octagon before this year’s up again.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Yan took to Twitter to react to the news “no chin” Garbrandt was opting out of a fight with thim, he wrote.

“That moment when No Chin was walking to take a piss but ended peeing himself. You only bark but don’t bite and now you running away to flyweight division. Shut up while I will fight contenders who have balls to challenge me.”
