Raphael Assuncao appears to be in good spirits.

The longtime divisional contender suffered an emphatic buzzer-beating second round knockout at the hands of Cody Garbrandt in the UFC 250 co-main event. The manner of the knockout made it go viral with many praising Garbrandt’s finish as well as all-round performance.

Assuncao, meanwhile, would lose via knockout for just the second time in his career. Although it was naturally a disappointment for the Brazilian, he is taking the setback well as he took to Twitter on Sunday.

“Sorry everyone Lt hand down from Sp bad mistake . ??I’m alright.

“Obviously ,saw the Ko few times now that was a different ? ?? I guess ? head is good shape.”

Assuncao Title Hopes Gone?

Assuncao’s hopes of fighting for the bantamweight title are unfortunately even slimmer now.

Although currently ranked No. 5, he will likely drop down significantly with his loss to Garbrandt being his third in a row following previous defeats to Marlon Moraes and Cory Sandhagen.

And given how stacked the 135-pound division continues to be along with the fact that Assuncao is now 37, it seems highly unlikely. Then again, crazier things have happened in this sport.

Do you think Assuncao can bounce back and climb into title contention?

Garbrandt: We Knew What Dillashaw Was On

Cody Garbrandt is open to fighting TJ Dillashaw a third time.

Garbrandt returned to winning ways with his impressive second-round knockout win over Raphael Assuncao at UFC 250 last night. It ended a three-fight losing streak for “No Love” who will now look to continue climbing up the ladder with hopes of becoming a bantamweight champion again.

Of course, he lost his bantamweight title to TJ Dillashaw and would lose to him again in their rematch — both times by knockout. However, Dillashaw would vacate his title last year after receiving a two-year suspension from USADA following a positive test for EPO.

Garbrandt had been highly vocal about Dillashaw’s steroid use even before the latter popped and undoubtedly feels that played a factor in their two fights. Regardless, the former champion is willing to face Dillashaw and get those losses back should the opportunity arise.

“We’re talking about TJ who is still suspended,” Garbrandt responded at the UFC 250 post-fight press conference when asked if he would like a third fight with Dillashaw. “He’s not even here but that’s a fight I’d like to get back. I mean, we all knew what he was on. We knew what he was doing. It took so many times for him to skate by USADA unfortunately. He’s serving a sentence. He’s going to always have to live with that for the rest of his life. He has a child that has eyes on him that knows his dad was a cheater. The whole world looked up to him, a lot of young kids.

“It’s sad, I kind of feel bad for the guy. He has no confidence that he has to use those kinds of aids to be a fighter. But we’ll see. I’m going to be after a world championship, I’m going to be at the top. So if he works his way back up there? Open doors, let’s get it.”

Do you think a trilogy between the pair goes a different way?

UFC 250 saw plenty of finishes, but there were two that stood out more than the others — Sean O’Malley and Cody Garbrandt’s knockouts of Eddie Wineland and Raphael Assuncao respectively.

When O’Malley knocked Wineland out in the first round of the main card opener, not many expected it to be outshone. That was until Garbrandt delivered a buzzer-beating knockout on Assuncao which went even more viral.

O’Malley tweeted his reaction to it soon after.

Although both fighters received performance bonuses, the mixed martial arts world has been debating since about which knockout was better.

“Sugar” unsurprisingly believes his was the superior knockout and explained why.

“His looked like something you’d see in a bar fight, mine was clean pure technique.”

Garbrandt vs. O’Malley Down The Line?

It’s certainly up for debate. While O’Malley’s knockout had more technique, many argued Garbrandt did it on the buzzer against a superior opponent.

Some fans have also called for them to fight each other next. It’s a fight that would definitely be enticing but for now, it’s too early for O’Malley who just completed his third UFC outing. Garbrandt seems to agree as he hinted at facing O’Malley in the future.

“I will say I like his style. I like his little flashy hair,” Garbrandt said at the post-fight presser. “It’s cool for the division. So keep doing his thing, keep getting those wins, we’ll see you at the top, buddy.”
