Former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt will make his long-awaited return to the octogen against top 135lb contender Raphael Assuncao.
Garbrandt has not fought since picking up a third straight knockout loss to Pedro Muhnoz at UFC 235 in March 2019.
According to MMA Fighting he will finally get back to fighting on June 6, the report reads.
“Former 135-pound champion Cody Garbrandt is expected to get back in action against Raphael Assuncao in a bantamweight showdown currently targeted for a UFC card on June 6.
“Multiple sources confirmed the news to MMA Fighting on Saturday with verbal agreements in place for the fight. The June 6 date is tentative for now as the UFC continues to build out its schedule in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic forcing the promotion to postpone or cancel several shows.”
Garbrandt and Assuncao were supposed to fight UFC Columbus on March 28, however the former champion was forced to withdraw from the bout due to an issue with his kidneys.
‘No Love’ willing be looking to earn a last win at 135lbs on June 6 before moving down to flyweight. Garbrandt previously announced his intentions to change weight classes, he said.
“First, we’re focused on Raphael, and that’s still the fight to make and the fight next. Then go down and really save the flyweight division.”
Assuncao will also be desperate to get the win after suffering back-to-back losses against Cory Sandhagen and Marlon Moraes.
So far, the UFC have revealed plans to host three shows in Jacksonville, Florida on May 8, May 13 and May 16. Beyond those events no further schedule has been released although Dana White has previously said he’ll be churning out cards every week to bring his schedule back into line.

Garbrandt recently announced that he would be making the move to flyweight in the future. That got a reaction out of former flyweight king and current bantamweight champion Cejudo who sent a warning to “No Love” as they started going back-and-forth.
Garbrandt decided to continue their social media warfare on Monday by commenting on the reported plan of Cejudo defending his bantamweight title against Dominick Cruz. Garbrandt — who defeated Cruz to become bantamweight champion back in 2016 — posted an image from that fight with a message for Cejudo.
“Here’s is what I think of Dom fighting that “” @HenryCejudo sit the fuck down! @ufc @danawhite @AliAbdelaziz00”
Cejudo responded with an image showing Garbrandt getting headkicked by TJ Dillashaw followed by an image of himself headkicking Dillashaw.
“Just a little reminder Cody “no Chin” Garbage. I kill the killers! #bendtheknee @Cody_Nolove”
The former bantamweight champion responded by mocking Cejudo’s defeat to Demetrious Johnson back in 2016.
“You got stopped by Mighty Mouse with a body shot! no heart!! Doughboy @HenryCejudo”
Interestingly, both fighters are represented by Ali Abdelaziz so it is very possible all these messages are tongue-in-cheek.
However, it is certainly building up the possibility of a Cejudo vs. Garbrandt title fight in the future. That is, if Garbrandt is able to end his three-fight losing streak against Raphael Assuncao.
What do you make of Garbrandt and Cejudo taking shots at each other?

Before the move, Garbrandt is supposed to face long-time contender Raphael Assunção. The bout was originally scheduled to co-main event the now postponed UFC Columbus card but the former 135lb champion was forced out of the fight due to injury.
Speaking to ESPN, ‘No Love’ said he still wants to face off against Assunção before stepping down to 125lbs and helping save the flyweight division. “First, we’re focused on Raphael, and that’s still the fight to make and the fight next. Then go down and really save the flyweight division.”
Current 135lb champion and former flyweight king Henry Cejudo was quick to respond to Garbrandt, he said via Twitter.
“I own that weight class too! No where to hide @Cody_Nolove #bendtheknee”
The pair went on to share a few messages and create a new rivalry out of thin air – check out the Twitter exchange below.
Garbrandt: We will see you. If you are calling the shots and picking your fights. Then I’ll see you soon. We all know when you’re the champ you call the shots. No easy way out for you at any weight class.
Cejudo: Did Ali write that for you?
Garbrandt : We all know @AliAbdelaziz00 bends you over both of his knees
Cejudo: Cody Garbage you are funny!
Garbrandt captured the 135lb title beating all-time great bantamweight Dominick Cruz in an emphatic fashion almost four years ago. Since then Garbrandt is on a three-fight losing streak after suffering consecutive knockout losses to TJ Dillashaw (twice) and Pedro Muhnoz.
In contrast Cejudo has been in fine form. The Olympic gold medallist has hit his MMA peak and captured titles in two weight divisions. He holds high profile wins over Demtrious Johnson, TJ Dillashaw and Marlon Moraes.
