Bantamweight prospect Nathaniel Wood has been chasing a fight with Marlon Vera since joining the UFC last year.  Vera was the last man to defeat Brad Pickett – who coaches 25-year-old Wood.

Many believe the pair will square off on 21 March 2020 at UFC London but “the prospect” isn’t so sure. Speaking on the MMA Fighting Eurobash Podcast he expressed doubts about the fight. (H/T MMA Fighting)

“I’d like to think it’s going to happen, but I don’t think that he wants to fight. He said, ‘I’ve got the pen ready and all of that’, but he said that a year and a half ago and nothing’s happened from it.

“He said to me once on Twitter about fighting me, I had set a date and he said, ‘No, you do nothing for me,’ and that kind of stuff. I just said, ‘Fine, whatever,’ and then he went and fought a guy that I had just beat, a guy that I beat last year, he’s only just gone and fought him. That just leaves me in confusion – do you want to step up or not?

Former Cage Warriors Champion Wood is beginning to look elsewhere for opponents and Cody Garbrandt is top of his wish list.

“If he doesn’t want to fight, me versus Cody – I’d love to have that fight. That excites me. He’s obviously ranked a lot higher than me at the moment, but then, he’s on a three-loss streak and I’m on a three-fight win streak. To me, for the UFC, it’s win/win. If he beats me, cool he’s back in the win column. If he doesn’t beat me, as far as I’m concerned, the UFC has a new title contender.”

Do you think Nathaniel Wood is ready to take on ex-champ Cody Gardbrandt?

TJ Dillashaw is in the midst of a two-year suspension for intentionally using EPO to get an advantage in his flyweight title fight with Henry Cejudo back in January. Dillashaw still lost the fight via first-round TKO and was subsequently busted for EPO use before being handed his suspension.

Speaking on “The Ariel Helwani MMA Show” yesterday, Dillashaw was asked if this was the only time he has used performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) for competition. Dillashaw confirmed it was the one and only time he had.

“Absolutely, man. I’ve been under a microscope,” Dillashaw said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday. “I got alerted from USADA when they first started the tests. Since the [Dominick] Cruz fight, I got email after email saying ‘you have been tested.’ They went back and retested all my old samples, obviously which is completely understandable to make sure there was nothing that slid by.

“Everything’s out in the open. I’m under a microscope, I’ll continue to be. I’ll continue to get drug tested left and right which is completely understandable. But yeah, I have nothing to hide.”

However, one man who isn’t buying this is Dillashaw’s former Alpha Male teammate-turned-rival, Cody Garbrandt. Taking to his Instagram story, Garbrandt called Dillashaw a “coward,” claiming Dillashaw has been using EPO for years.

Former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt is targeting a return early next year.

Garbrandt is currently on a three-fight losing streak with all those defeats coming via knockout. His most recent defeat was to Pedro Munhoz at UFC 235 earlier this year in March.

“No Love” hasn’t competed since and is currently nursing a wrist injury. However, he hopes to return in March 2020 in what would be a year since his last outing. The caveat is that he wants to fight in his home state of Ohio:

“I’m hoping for March return, hopefully sooner,” Garbrandt told MMA Junkie. “I talked to Dana a few days ago. I would like for the UFC to come back to Ohio in March. There’s the Arnold Classic there. It’s a great time to go and do that, so we’ll see.

We got Stipe (Miocic) as the champion again, so Stipe fighting in Ohio the home state, I would love to, and that’s where I’m at with that. I’m excited to come back.”

Despite his recent losing streak, Garbrandt is still young and believes he can get his title back. He is also very eager to return due to just how exciting the bantamweight division is becoming:

“I’ve been a little injury prone these last few fights and camps, but I’m taking my time, and I just turned 28. I have a lot of life and fight in me,” Garbrandt added. “My hunger is still – everyday I wake up excited to get back.

My division is one of the most entertaining, best divisions in the UFC. You got Frankie coming down, you got Edgar, you got Marlon (Moraes), you got Henry (Cejudo), Dominick’s (Cruz) making his comeback, you got T.J. ‘Pillashaw,’ he’ll probably be back. You know he’s taken his steroids, so it’s a good division. Those are all good guys, so it keeps me excited.”

Are you excited to see Garbrandt back? Who do you want to see him face next?

Cody Garbrandt will not return to the Octagon until 2020.

The former bantamweight champion has been dealing with a bevy of injuries and was set to return by the end of 2019. Yet, that is no longer the case. His manager, Ali Abdelaziz told MMAJunkie by text message.

He reportedly suffered another injury in training last week and has a surgery scheduled. The report says Cody Garbrandt suffered a torn tendon. This, of course, comes just weeks after he said he was cleared to return and was eyeing a late 2019 return to the Octagon.

Garbrandt last fought back at UFC 235 in March where he was knocked out by Pedro Munhoz in the first round. It was his third loss in a row, all of which came by knockout. Before the loss to the Brazilian, he was knocked out in back-to-back fights at UFC 217 and UFC 227 by rival, T.J. Dillashaw.

“No Love” is 11-3 as a pro and currently ranked seventh in the division but should fall even more once the rankings are updated after UFC 241.

The exact timeline of when he will return is unknown, but it should be in early 2020. Who he will fight is also unknown at this time.

Who do you think Cody Garbrandt should fight upon his return in 2020?
