One-time UFC bantamweight world champion Cody Garbrandt has made his pick for the bantamweight throne at UFC 280. TJ Dillashaw will be looking to regain his lost crown against the reigning champion Aljamain Sterling in Abu Dhabi.
The US-born TJ Dillashaw is a two-time champion with three total defenses, including two wins over former training partner ‘No Love’ Garbrandt. He was stripped of his title and suspended for two years due to testing positive for recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO). Dillashaw made a successful return when he earned a decision victory against the top-ranked Cory Sandhagen earlier this year. Now, at UFC 280, he has an opportunity to take back his lost title.
Cody Garbrandt picked his former training partner and adversary to take back the throne against ‘Funk Master.’ In a post on his Instagram, ‘No Love’ explained:
“What a stacked card we have … UFC matchmakers, hats off to you guys … Aljamain silenced a lot of critics with his last fight, with his dominant win over Yan. I just feel like TJ is a different fighter. Stylistically, movement, he blends the mixed martial arts really well. Even though he’s a piece of sh*t. For some reason I just have TJ winning this fight against Aljamain.”
Cody Garbrandt chooses Petr Yan over ‘Sugar’ Sean O’Malley
‘No Love’ Cody Garbrandt will also have a close eye on the other bantamweight showdown on the main card. The colorful-haired Sean O’Malley will face a stiff top-five test against the Russian-born Petr Yan. While speaking on Instagram, Garbrandt explained his pick:
“‘Sugar’ Sean versus Petr Yan fight, very intriguing stylistic matchup. ‘Sugar’ Sean being put to the test. Petr Yan [rebounds] from his previous performance to Aljamain Sterling in a title fight. I’m going to go with Yan in that one.”
‘Sugar’ Sean O’Malley will look to break into the top ten with a solid win over Petr Yan at UFC 280. In the co-main event, the bantamweight world championship will be on the line between the defending Sterling and former titleholder Dillashaw.
Since his loss of the world title at bantamweight, Cody Garbrandt has gone 1-4. Most recently, ‘No Love’ attempted to drop down a weight class to flyweight however suffered an authoritative TKO loss to Kai Kara-France. Since then, he has been booked against Rani Yahya twice but this bout was canceled each time. Garbrandt has no confirmed booking for his next fight.

Cody Garbrandt is without an opponent for his next fight.
Former UFC Bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt was scheduled to return to action against Rani Yahya at the UFC Apex, Las Vegas on July 9 at UFC Vegas 58.
Cody Garbrandt will no longer fight Rani Yahya
Yahya has been reportedly forced to withdraw from the match due to a neck injury. He’s expected to remain on the sidelines from training for at least four weeks with no concrete timeline for his return to the octagon as of yet, as reported by MMA Fighting. Having dropped only one in the last five years, Yahya was looking to extend his win streak to three after dispatching both Ray Rodriguez and Kyung Ho Kang.
It remains to be seen whether Garbrandt will remain on the card and be matched up with a timely replacement or if he will be scrapped from the card for a future event.
‘No Love’ was going into the bout reeling off five losses in his previous six. Of those five losses, four were by knockout or technical knockout. His last outing and debut at flyweight against Kai Kara-France did not go his way as he got knocked out in the first round at UFC 269. The sole win for Garbrandt since December 2016 was against Raphael Assuncao, who he knocked out right before the bell in round two in June 2020.
Garbrandt was moving back up to the 135-lbs division, a weight class he ruled before succumbing to two consecutive defeats to TJ Dillashaw.
UFC Vegas 58 will be headlined by Rafael dos Anjos who faces Rafael Fiziev at the UFC Apex Arena this July 9.
Following the change, UFC Vegas 58’s card stands as below:

Former UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw has an idea of what Cody Garbrandt needs to do to get back on track in his career.
Dillashaw is expected to face Aljamain Sterling later this year for the next bantamweight title shot. He lost his belt after getting suspended for two years by USADA for EPO use.
Dillashaw returned last summer with a split decision win over Cory Sandhagen in one of the best fights of 2021. But, he suffered a nasty leg injury early on in the fight that required surgery and paused his comeback.
Dillashaw and Garbrandt battled twice in the Octagon, with Dillashaw winning both title fights. He took Garbrandt’s belt at UFC 217 before winning an immediate rematch at UFC 227.
Garbrandt’s struggles have continued after his Dillashaw fights, with knockout losses to the likes of Pedro Munhoz and flyweight Kai Kara-France. He’s slated to return later this year against Rani Yahya after his loss to Kara-France.
“He’s a pretty freak athlete,” Dillashaw said. “He’s fast. He’s the fastest guy I’ve ever sparred or fought, by far the most speed, but I’m not trying to be a complete a**hole, but he’s not the smartest human being inside that cage. To be able to stay on the top, you’ve got to change who you are and fight to fight to fight, he’s the exact same fighter. He’s a wrestler. He knows how to wrestle. Why not learn some jiu-jitsu and stop relying on your chin and hands because your chin is not there.
“So change up who you are as a fighter, and he’s just not willing to do that. He’s gonna keep his head in the same spot, his hands are gonna be low, and he’s gonna throw hard, fast hooks. So after everyone sees where his weaknesses are at, and his left hand is in his pocket as he throws the right hand, just keep your left hand high and smoke him with the right. I mean, game over. We’ve seen it like five fights in a row.” (h/t MMA Junkie)
Garbrandt has lost five of his last six fights, with four of those losses coming by knockout and with his lone decision loss coming against Rob Font. A loss to Yahya later in 2022 could be potentially the end of Garbrandt’s run in the UFC.
That said, Dillashaw doesn’t believe that Garbrandt’s mistakes aren’t correctable, and he thinks Garbrandt still has what it takes to be a matchup nightmare at bantamweight and flyweight.

According to a report from MMA Fighting, it was a neck injury that forced Yahya to withdraw from the bout. There is currently no word yet on if Garbrandt will remain on the card.
Garbrandt is coming off of a UFC flyweight debut that didn’t go according to plan, as he was knocked out by Kai Kara-France in Round 1 back at UFC 269. Before that, he suffered losses at bantamweight to Rob Font and Pedro Munhoz.
It’s unclear if Garbrandt is done competing at flyweight or if his return to bantamweight is for the short term.
Garbrandt earned the UFC bantamweight title by defeating Dominick Cruz at UFC 207. He would go on to lose back-to-back title fights to TJ Dillashaw at UFC 217 and UFC 227.
Yahya has won his last two fights in the Octagon, including most recently against Kyung Ho Kang last November. He also earned wins over Luke Sanders and Ray Rodriguez.
Garbrandt had been expected to potentially compete for the UFC flyweight title before his flyweight debut loss. He has fought at bantamweight for the majority of his career.
The July 9 UFC Fight Night event includes a women’s flyweight matchup between Cynthia Calvillo and Nina Nunes, and the return of The Ultimate Fighter: 29 finalist Tresean Gore against Josh Fremd. The card will be headlined by Rafael dos Anjos taking on fellow lightweight “Rafael,” Rafael Fiziev.

Former two-division UFC champion, Henry Cejudo has revealed that he reached out to Cody Garbrandt to assist him with coaching.
Since announcing his retirement, Cejudo has attracted many top names in the UFC to train alongside himself and his coach Eric Albarracin at the Fight Ready gym. Stars such as Jon Jones, Jiri Prochazka, and Zhang Weili have also recently attended the gym to hone in on their skills.
Newly anointed flyweight champion, Deiveson Figueiredo had high praise for ‘The Messenger’, moving to train with Cejudo for his trilogy bout against Brandon Moreno. “It feels great training with him. Figueiredo said to Dazn, “I enjoy it a lot. I’ve learned a lot, and I’ve learned to like him as a person as well.”
Henry Cejudo Reaches Out To Cody Granbrandt
One fighter that Cejudo feels that could use with his guidance is former bantamweight champion, Cody Garbrandt. Garbrandt is currently 1-5 in his last six bouts, with four of those coming by knockout; ‘No Love’ is also coming off an unsuccessful drop down in weight to the flyweight division.
However, when speaking to Helen Yee, The Olympic gold medallist had shared that he still has belief in Garbrandt had contacted him to come and train at the gym.
“I talked to Cody Garbrandt, too, a little bit because I think he still has the talent,” said Cejudo. “There’s a lot of opportunity for him to continue to keep growing, and I think whatever he’s done in the past, I just want to guide him. (Transcribed by BloodyElbow)
“I don’t necessarily want him here full time, but just give him a two cents of how is it that I think he should probably train. How is it that he should probably take the distance because Cody is so technical, he shouldn’t be in fist fights. He needs to just technically pick you apart.
“We talked to him on the phone,” continued Cejudo. “He’s good friends with Ali [Abdelaziz]. I’m looking out for him. I think his career, it blossomed in the beginning, and it’s just a lot of trial and error, and just fighting emotional has cost him.
If Cody Garbrandt was to train with Henry Cejudo, What do you think he could add to his game?
