At UFC Tampa in the promotion’s final event of 2024, Colby Covington makes a somewhat unexpected return to face Joaquin Buckley in the main event on December 14. The former interim welterweight champion has been linked with a lot of different match-ups since his last fight against Leon Edwards in December of last year but none of them have come together.

Covington will now be replacing Ian Machado Garry to take on the surging Buckley after Garry moved into the co-main event of UFC 310 to face Shavkat Rakhmonov. Though “New Mansa” is in the best form of his life right now, many see Buckley as a more winnable fight for Covington than some of the other names he has been linked with.

For as good as his winning streak at welterweight has been, he’s got some losses on his record and in some of those, he was outwrestled which is where the former three-time title challenger could get his hand raised.

Josh Thomson and “Big” John McCarthy raised this point during a recent episode of the Weighing In podcast where they said that “Chaos” may be underestimating Buckley for this very reason. McCarthy spoke about why Covington has decided to come back for this fight in particular.

“I look and I think Colby actually bit on this fight thinking ‘Alright, I’ve seen people out wrestle Buckley in the past and I can out wrestle him and take him down’. Now, that’s a different Buckley though too, Buckley’s a different fighter.”

McCarthy also made reference to Buckley’s 2018 loss in Bellator to Logan Storley, using this as a comparison to his next match-up.

“You can look at that and say well, Logan just outwrestled him and dropped him anytime he wanted and takedown stuff. Logan’s a better wrestler than Colby Covington ever was okay, sorry, and Buckley is way better now than he was back then.”

Joaquin Buckley is confident that the doors to a UFC title shot will open wide with an exciting win over Colby Covington.

Buckley and Covington are set to headline the UFC’s end-of-the-year event in Tampa, Florida, on December 14th. On paper, the fight looks to be a promising banger, and it could have significant implications for the welterweight title picture.

While Buckley still hasn’t cracked the top five in the welterweight rankings, this fight could still give him enough star power to potentially surge past other competitors if he can finish things with enough of a bang. According to Buckley, there couldn’t be any arguments against it.

Joaquin Buckley Is Hungry for a title Shot if he is successful over Colby Covington at UFC Tampa

“I really feel like it wouldn’t be no arguments once I go out there and put on a dominant performance on Colby Covington. It’s just, yet again: Why not give me an opportunity to fight for the title?” Joaquin Buckley said, speaking to MMA journalist James Lynch (H/T BJ Penn.com).

“You know it’s going to be fun to watch. Whether I win, lose, it doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, it’s the entertainment business. So why not give me the chance and opportunity to fight for the belt?”

Currently riding a five-fight winning streak, with his last victory over Stephen Thompson in spectacular fashion, it seems like the sky is the limit for ‘New Mansa’ right now. Another factor that aids Buckley in his quest for a title shot is that he is usually an exciting fighter. We have seen time and time again that excitement and star power trump meritocracy in the UFC, and we shouldn’t expect any different with Buckley. So, the road to a title shot could finally be paved if he can pull off a wild enough finish.

Joaquin Buckley says that Colby Covington is Broke

UFC athlete Joaquin Buckley will get a chance to face former top-ranked welterweight ‘Chaos’ Colby Covington in a UFC Fight Night main event on December 14. The US-born ‘New Mansa’ Buckley says that Covington needed to take this match to help build back his bank account.

Joaquin Buckley says that Colby Covington is Broke

Joaquin Buckley has been on an impressive run since moving down to the welterweight division. He’s currently undefeated at 170 pounds, with a 4-0 record in this weight class. Joaquin Buckley has made waves in the division with notable victories over top contenders like Vicente Luque and former title challenger Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson.

After a year-long absence, former interim champion Colby Covington will be stepping back into the octagon. His last fight was in December 2023, when he lost to Leon Edwards in a title bout. ‘Chaos’ is best known for his mouth, not so much for his fights. He’s been relatively inactive lately, having fought only five times since December 2019.

‘New Mansa’ Joaquin Buckley said that Covington would still be inactive if he hadn’t spent all of his money. In an interview with James Lynch, Buckley explained:

“If you’re out there spending your money on females, promo videos, and hanging with TikTokers and other entertainers, money runs dry. I feel like, financially, he probably had to take this fight. I don’t think the UFC forced him, though.”

In recent social media posts, Covington was filmed hanging out with influencers Kaz Sawyer and Vitaly Zdorovetskiy, plus rapper Lil Pump. According to former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub, Covington hires models for his videos. In an interview, he said:

“He did his gimmick and this is the best part, he rented two chicks and I was like ‘do you have to do this?’ and he was like ‘I’m sorry man, I got to.’ So, they don’t know who he is and they hate being in there. They may have been strippers, I don’t know. Lovely ladies. So when they’re back he goes…you can tell he is always thinking, he goes ‘oh, while I’m talking to Brendan, can one of you rub my shoulders?’ and she goes ‘I’m not rubbing your f**king shoulders’”

This main event promises to be a clash of styles between Covington’s wrestling-heavy style and Buckley’s explosive striking. It’s a crucial fight for both men, with Covington looking to bounce back from his title loss and Buckley aiming to continue his ascent in the welterweight division.

New Mansa’ Joaquin Buckley was set to face Ian Machado Garry, but his opponent got switched and now he will face former top-ranked welterweight Colby Covington. This is set to be a headlining fight on December 14. At first, Buckley wasn’t sure if the match was actually happening.

Joaquin Buckley Was Surprised by Colby Covington

Since moving to welterweight, Joaquin Buckley has been on an unstoppable run including his most recent knockout win against former title contender Stephen Thompson. Interestingly, the fight with Covington came together on short notice. Initially, Buckley was scheduled to face Ian Machado Garry, but plans changed when Garry was moved to a different event. Covington stepped in as a replacement, creating this matchup.

Chaos’ Colby Covington has been relatively inactive lately and is better known for supporting Donald Trump. Covington is known for his outspoken nature and has been involved in various public feuds with other fighters.

The US-born Joaquin Buckley explained how this fight came together, speaking in an interview with James Lynch, he said:

When I saw the news and the rumors going around on social media, I was like, “Nah, this can’t be happening.” I’d already signed my bout agreement and everything. So I thought, why not go ahead and make that post real quick to let people know the fight was still on? But then, before I knew it, Dana White came out with the announcement, like, “Nah, we got the two undefeated kids fighting each other.”

“Then I got a call from Hunter, telling me they had a great opportunity for me to fight Colby Covington. So they just made the switch. Why did they make the switch? I can’t tell you. But other than that, I just know I’ve got another good fight, and I’m still the main event. That’s all I care about.

Now, Colby Covington is a must-win position while the streaking Buckley is looking to climb the competitive welterweight rankings. ‘New Mansa’ concluded with:

“Beating someone like this shows people the level I’m on. I can’t wait to show the world how great I am”
