'I don't see it': Shavkat Rakhmonov unfazed by Conor McGregor's potential welterweight push

Amid his own quest for a title charge at the welterweight limit, unbeaten divisional challenger, Shavkat Rakhmonov is unfazed by a potential future push to gold by former two-division champion, Conor McGregor — amid links to an end-of-year UFC 310 return clash.

Rakhmonov, the current number three ranked welterweight contender, most recently improved to 18-0 as a professional back in December on the main card of UFC 296, laying waste to former title challenger, Stephen Thompson with a stunning second round rear-naked choke win.

Shavkat Rakhmonov claims Belal Muhammad is unable to fight at UFC 310: 'He isn't ready'

As for former two-division champion, McGregor, the former featherweight and lightweight gold holder was scheduled to snap a three year hiatus at UFC 303 back in June, taking on Michael Chandler in a matchup at the welterweight limit.

However, amid claims to stake a shot at a record-setting third championship charge, McGregor’s presence at the weight class against Missouri veteran, Chandler is not causing any concern or finishing talent, Rakhmonov.

Belal Muhammad declined to face Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 307, explains Shavkat

“He’s (Conor McGregor) been getting ready to fight a long time but wasn’t able to do that yet so in my head, I don’t even think about him winning this one fight in three years is going to do something,” Shavkat Rakhmonov told MMA Fighting. “I understand he’s a big star but in my head, I don’t see it being possible.”

“I believe UFC is the best and the most fair organization so I believe they’re gonna do everything right,” Shavkat Rakhmonov continued.

Earlier this week to boot, Uzbekistan finisher, Rakhmonov claimed current welterweight champion, Belal Muhammad flat out rejected the chance to fight him in October in a heated grudge fight between the duo.

“Yeah, actually, I’ve already been offered a fight to fight Belal (Muhammad), and I accepted the fight against Belal,” Shavkat Rakhmonov explained. “But unfortunately, he declined to fight me due to timing issues. He wasn’t ready to defend his belt at this time. So, we’ll see what’s going to happen and when he’s going to be ready, so I will be able to fight him.”

Conor McGregor pays off £60 plumbing tool debt 15 years later

15 years after borrowing a measly £60 pounds to pay for plumbing tools and equipment to help with a faltering plumbers apprenticeship, Conor McGregor has paid in full his loan to a prior friend — amid continued speculation regarding his return to the Octagon.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight champion and a featherweight titleholder, has been out of action since he headlined UFC 264 back in 2021, fracturing his left tibia and fibula in a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss to former interim champion, Dustin Poirier.

And forced from a return to action three years into his lengthy hiatus, former two-division champion, McGregor fractured a toe on the same foot as his prior leg injury just two weeks out from a welterweight weight class move in a UFC 303 return against Michael Chandler at the end of June during International Fight Week.

Conor McGregor finally pays back £60 plumbing tools debt

However, earlier this week, McGregor — a one-time apprentice plumbing during his teenage years, was forced to borrow £60 from a colleague to buy tools for his trade, namely from Patrick Brady.

And 15 years later, the Crumlin counter striker has finally rewarded Brady’s patience, repaying the loan in full.

“I’m a plumber all my life, retired now, but Conor (McGregor) wanted to be a plumber so when he started off, he’s 16, I said I’ll get him his tools,” Brady told the Sun during a recent interview.

“I knew a fella that worked in the trade that could get the tools for cheap,” Brady explained. “I said, I’d get him the tools and he can pay me back week by week because he used to be at the club (Crumlin Boxing Club). I said, ‘ You got them?’ He said, ‘Yeah, I’ll pay ya back.’ But he never did.”

And years later, having trained with Brady and his boxing coach, Phil Sutcliffe ahead of his infamous boxing match with Floyd Mayweather, McGregor invested some significant funds into the gym in Crumlin — before paying back his £60 debt.

Chael Sonnen claims Conor McGregor targeted to make UFC 311 return in California next year

“It was 15 years later he (Conor McGregor) paid me back, that’s when he wanted to get on the show,” Brady explained. “He gave us a few things, a new ring and things like that, tracksuits and all that. He said, ‘Are you happy with that?’ I said, ‘Yeah, but one more thing — I want my 70 quid.”

Michael Chandler on Conor McGregor

The former Bellator world champion ‘Iron’ Michael Chandler has become a standout fighter in the UFC’s competitive lightweight division. Win or lose, Chandler has created a reputation for being a highly exciting athlete.

‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor made history when he captured two titles in the UFC, earning both by way of stunning knockout. Later on, he would have a blockbuster boxing fight against the all-time great Floyd Mayweather. But since a leg break a few years ago, Ireland’s McGregor has not been active in combat sports.

Chandler and Conor McGregor coached a season of The Ultimate Fighter against one another but they have been unable to book a fight date as of yet. ‘The Notorious’ has been injured or non-committal.

Speaking in an interview, Michael Chandler opened up about his self-doubts when it comes to fighting Conor McGregor. He explained:

“He [my inner voice] does not think I deserve this fight [with Conor]. But I do. He never would have, man, he never would have, and I think we all have that little guy or that little gal inside of us. And it’s okay to have them. And I think it’s also okay to open up about it.

“It seems more genuine, and it’s more authentic: to speak about your struggles, to speak about your shortcomings, to speak about your doubts, because if you act like you are impenetrable and you’re bulletproof, it’s an unattainable psychology. I do hear the doubters, and I do hear the naysayers, and I do hear the haters, of course.

“But we just keep on moving forward, and even though that little guy from that little town doesn’t believe that we were created to create this crazy life that we have. We just pat them on the back and say, it’s okay. Just keep on coming. We’re gonna keep on climbing.”

He concluded with:

“”I have definitely learned how to silence my [inner voice] more. I was a small guy from a small town who was taught to do small things, and I think there’s just so many people that do resonate with that message…

“I was mad at the little guy for a very long time, and then once I began to acknowledge him and became friends with him, and realised that there are a lot of great things that I have accomplished, and great things that I have acquired in this life because of him. I stopped hating him, and just started to embrace him and enjoying the ride. And we’re on this journey together.”

MMA teams led by former UFC champions Frank Mir and Henry Cejudo will go toe to toe at the United Fight League 5 on August 30, 2024, at The Gila River Wild Horse Pass Casino in Arizona. The sold-out event will be streamed on Kick and Rumble for free as well.

Mir and Cejudo coach UFL’s Team Las Vegas and Team Phoenix, respectively. Although the fighting rules are the same, the state-inspired teams and the team-based scoring system in the promotion are like a breath of fresh air in MMA. It is also the first and only combat sports league to provide health insurance to fighters.

Here’s how the UFL aims to set a new standard for combat sports promotions through its newly introduced scoring system…

Frank Mir Explains How Relying On Stars Like Conor McGregor Produces Inconsistent Results For The UFC

Mir appeared on the talkSPORT MMA YouTube channel to discuss UFL 5’s format and innovative scoring system. Including Las Vegas and Phoenix, UFL will have a total of eight teams with Rashad Evans and Quinton Jackson confirmed to lead Team Florida and Southern California, respectively.

Here’s how teams will score points at UFL 5:

  • Finishing a fight in the first round grants 4 points in a standard bout and 6 points in the main event.
  • Finishing a fight in the second round grants 3 points in a standard bout and 5 points in the main event.
  • Finishing a fight in the third round grants 2 points in a standard bout and 4 points in the main event.
  • Finishing a main event fight in the fourth round grants 3 points.
  • Finishing a main event fight in the fifth round grants 2 points.
  • A decision win grants 1 point in a standard bout as well as the main event.

In case there’s a tie after all the fights, the team with the least cage time will get the nod, bragging rights, and $50,000.

As per Mir, this is how the UFL aims to tackle the problem of being overly dependent on a limited number of stars. He claimed that the UFC benefitted heavily from Conor McGregor but the promotion will always produce fewer numbers when he isn’t fighting.

“It made sense to me because I was like, you know, it sucks because when fighters come and go. You know, he’s like, Conor is a phenomenal example. Conor moved the needle like no other fighter, but when he’s not on the card, or he’s not part of there, everybody suffers. He doesn’t know, not as many people are going to view the fights because he’s not fighting. And so, I was like, how can we get around that. And I always watch college wrestling and seen how, here in the States, you can have a guy from Iowa, you know, wrestling Penn State, Minnesota, and Ohio, and all these powerhouses of wrestling that have long traditions and they have, you know, a car stadium, it fills up 60,000 people.”

The two-time UFC heavyweight champ also stated how this isn’t an issue in wrestling. For instance, team-based college wrestling events in the United States attract thousands of viewers constantly despite the absence of huge names. Mir believes that a team-based setting helps them build loyal fans who care more about a team’s progress instead of just wanting to see one fighter.

It is too early to predict how commercially successful UFL’s new format will be in the long run. For now, fans can enjoy Team Phoenix vs. Team Las Vegas which features a bantamweight championship main event bout between Hunter Azure and Vince Morales.
