Conor McGregor is Begging for Freedom in Cryptic Message

Conor McGregor yearns to be free.

It’s been more than three years since we’ve seen ‘Mystic Mac’ grace the Octagon. His drought was scheduled to end on June 29th in Las Vegas, but McGregor ultimately bowed out of his UFC 303 headliner with Michael Chandler due to, of all things, a broken pinky toe.

Since then, McGregor has been lobbying for a date in December, but even more than that it looks like McGregor wants to be free from the shackles of his UFC contract.

Recently, the former two-division titleholder took to social media with a four-word post that had everyone speculating about its meaning.

“When I get free,” McGregor wrote on X.

McGregor also posted a training clip on Instagram with the hashtag #FreeTheMac.

Conor McGregor’s Comments come days after speculation over UFC 310 headliner

Interestingly, McGregor’s comments come days after newly minted welterweight world champion Belal Muhammad revealed that his first title defense could headline UFC 310 in December, the date McGregor desperately wanted for his rescheduled scrap with Chandler.

It’s possible that Muhammad versus either Shavkat Rakhmonov or Kamaru Usman—the two fighters heavily favored to get the first crack—could be situated as the co-main event under a McGregor vs. Chandler headliner, though no such thing has happened since 2016 when Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz main evented UFC 196.

The co-main event that night was Miesha Tate’s win over Holly Holm to capture the women’s bantamweight title.

"He's Gone:" Conor McGregor is not fighting again according to Matt Brown

Conor McGregor is done. At least, Matt Brown thinks he is.

It’s been over three years since the Irish megastar graced the Octagon. In June, McGregor was scheduled to headline UFC 303 in Las Vegas, but a broken pinky toe forced ‘Mystic Mac’ out of his headliner with former Bellator champion Michael Chandler.

Conor McGregor

Now, fans and fighters alike are calling into question whether or not we’ll actually see the former two-division titleholder fight in the Octagon ever again.

Brown, who announced his retirement from mixed martial arts in May after logging 30 fights with the UFC over the course of 15 years, believes that McGregor’s days of competing in the UFC are over.

“He’s gone,” Brown said of McGregor on The Fighter vs. The Writer. “I’ve said it for a long time now. How many years have I been saying it? He’s done. I don’t discount that there’s a chance that he comes back, but the chances of him coming back are way lower than the chances of him not fighting again. He’s at, like, a 20-percent chance of coming back, I think.

“He’s doing great staying in the news, doing great keeping his name out there. We’d all love to see him fight still. I’d love to see him fight Chandler, whoever I’d love to see Conor fight — if he’s training properly, staying off the various substances, or whatever it is. Come in the real Conor. Live your life all want when you’re 45 and you’re retired and you’re totally out. Enjoy it then, but for now, let’s see all the fights. Let’s see them. I want to see you fight” (h/t MMA Fighting).

Brown believes Michael chandler will live to regret waiting around for conor mcGregor

McGregor’s quote-unquote “greatest comeback in combat sports history” was first announced in early 2023 when it was revealed that he would compete as a coach opposite Chandler on last year’s season of The Ultimate Fighter. That has since come and gone, yet the two seem no closer to clashing in the cage than they were 18 months ago.

Conor McGregor

It’s an especially frustrating situation for the 38-year-old Chandler who has been waiting on McGregor for the last two years, giving up a big chunk of the precious little time he has left to compete at the highest level.

“In my view, you only live once and this is a short window of time in your life that you get to compete at the highest level,” Brown said of Chandler’s situation. “I think he’s going to look back when he’s 50, 60 years old and be like, ‘I missed out on a couple of years there just waiting for a payday.’ I don’t think he’s hurting for money anyways [but], ‘I waited for this payday and I could have been out there putting myself on the line.’

“I think Michael Chandler’s a competitor. I think he wants to be out there putting it on the line. I think he’s going to end up regretting this someday.”

Michael Chandler

Chandler may not necessarily agree as he’s kept himself fairly busy over the last couple of years, but if the fight with McGregor never comes to fruition, we can’t help but wonder how many other interesting matchups he’s left on the table.

Former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor has cryptically asked to be freed in some new training footage posted — amid links to a potential return at the end of the year in a rescheduled pairing against Michael Chandler in the main event of UFC 310 in a welterweight matchup.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight champion and featherweight gold holder, was slated to headline UFC 303 at the end of June, taking main event honors against the above-mentioned, Chandler during International Fight Week.

And amid links to an end-of-year comeback at UFC 310 in the final pay-per-view event of the year for the organization, Conor McGregor posted some new bag work training footage, questioning to be freed — with fans pointing to the sole fight remaining on his current deal with the promotion.

And while McGregor has campaigned for a comeback fight before the end of the year, McGregor may not get his wish according to former title challenger, Chael Sonnen, who allegedly heard through the grapevine how a January return is currently being targeted in California.

I’m hearing the organization would like him (Conor McGregor) to fight in California in January, I can’t confirm that for you but I would like to say this one thing Daniel (Cormier), as long-winded as I’m being,” Chael Sonnen said on Good Guy/Bad Guy. “I believe him. I believe that he wants to fight. I believe that he is going behind the scenes, see he loves to feint power — he loves to let people know it’s all my decision.”

Sean O’Malley: Conor McGregor is UFC’s biggest star, but I’m coming for that spot

Ahead of his return at Noche UFC next month in a title fight with the surging, Merab Dvalishvili, current undisputed bantamweight best, Sean O’Malley is well aware that ex-champion, Conor McGregor is still the standard for stars in the sport, however, he claims he is fast coming for that crown.

O’Malley, the current undisputed bantamweight champion under the banner of the organization, is slated to take main event honors at the Las Vegas Sphere next month — headlining Noche UFC in a title showdown with Georgian grappling ace, Dvalishvili.

Last featuring at UFC 299 back in March, Montana striker, O’Malley landed a one-sided unanimous decision win over former-foe, Marlon Vera — avenging his sole professional loss against the Ecuadorian striking veteran.

And while former two-weight titleholder, Conor McGregor has yet to return following a leg injury over three years ago, the Dubliner continues to draw heavy links to a return at UFC 310 before the end of the year in a welterweight clash with Michael Chandler.

However, amid uncertainty over his future in the sport, Contender Series product, O’Malley claims he is coming for the crown from McGregor — starting with his showdown against Dvalishvili.

“Right now, it’s Conor McGregor, 100 percent,” Sean O’Malley told ESPN. “He’s a dork, but it’s the truth. For me to get to that, I need to go out there and knock out Merab (Dvalishvili), I go up to [145lbs], I beat Ilia (Topuria), I beat Max (Holloway), I beat Umar (Nurmagomedov), I’m three fights away from being one of the greatest of all-time, one of the most exciting of all-time. There’s [a] difference.”

“No one thinks Conor’s the greatest fighter of all-time,” Sean O’Malley explained. “He was lacking skills, lacked title defenses, but entertainment-wise, he’s the best in the world. Entertainment-wise, he was the best.”

Gilbert Burns criticizes Chandler’s wait for McGregor: 'That’s crazy. Even though it’s Conor McGregor, I don’t care'

Former welterweight title challenger, Gilbert Burns has claimed it’s “crazy” how his teammate, Michael Chandler remains sidelined from action for so long — particularly with a matchup opposite Conor McGregor failing to materialize so far this year.

Burns, the current number six ranked welterweight contender and former title challenger, most recently featured at UFC 299 back in March, suffering a third round knockout loss to surging Australian contender, Jack Della Maddalena in the pair’s high-stakes pairing.

For Chandler, the Kill Cliff FC staple has been out of action for the last two years, remaining sidelined since he suffered a third round rear-naked choke loss to former interim lightweight gold holder, Dustin Poirier at Madison Square Garden.

And chasing a grudge fight with McGregor in the time since to no avail, Chandler was booked to headline UFC 303 against the Dubliner earlier this summer, however, a toe injury ruled the ex-champion from a comeback to the Octagon.

Gilbert Burns urges Michael Chandler to move on from Conor McGregor

With Chandler still hoping to secure a fight with McGregor at the welterweight limit before the end of the year — potentially at UFC 310 in December, Chandler has been labelled as “crazy” by his training partner, Burns for chasing the bout still.

“I would never wait that long for any opponent,” Gilbert Burns told MMA Fighting during a recent interview. “I would never wait, especially (at) my age. He (Michael Chandler) just turned 38, too. I would never wait two years. That’s crazy. Even thought it’s Conor McGregor, I don’t care. I would never wait.”

He’s already waiting that long, like you said, I would wait until December,” Gilbert Burns explained. “If the guy shows up, good, we’re here. If not, I think it would have moved on a long time [ago] already.”

Slated to return later this year at UFC Vegas 97, Burns will tangle with fellow grappling talent, Sean Brady in a main event bout in September.

Conor McGregor Sees Himself in Michael Jordan’s Iconic Moves: "I’ve done it multiple times!"

Conor McGregor compared himself to NBA icon Michael Jordan.

There’s no denying that Conor McGregor is the most successful athlete in the history of mixed martial arts. Aside from being the promotion’s first-ever simultaneous two-division world champion, he’s also responsible for eight of the 10 highest-grossing pay-per-view events in UFC history.

Apparently, that’s good enough to stand side-by-side with the man who went from being cut by his high school basketball team to becoming the greatest player (sorry LeBron) the game has ever seen.

Recently, the popular X account @HoopsMixOnly posted a clip of ‘Air’ Jordan doing ‘Air’ Jordan things. Sharing the video, McGregor compared himself to the six-time NBA champion.

“Unless you’ve hit moves they’ve never seen before you are in no talks,” McGregor wrote. “I’ve done it multiple times! Respect to Jordan. BIG GOAT TALK.”

Conor McGregor and Michael Jordan May Be More Similar Than You Think — Careerwise

McGregor’s self-comparison to Michael Jordan may seem like a bit of a stretch at first, but once you run the numbers, it’s not all that crazy to consider. The former Tar Heel won six championship rings for the Chicago Bulls between 1991 and 1998, three-peating twice.

Michael Jordan

McGregor has won five world titles when you factor in both the interim and undisputed UFC featherweight championship, the lightweight title he took off Eddie Alvarez, and his two belts under the Cage Warriors banner.

Conor McGregor

Sure, Michael Jordan was a five-time MVP, but as we mentioned above, McGregor has headlined eight of the 10 biggest UFC PPVs of all time. He’s also responsible for three of the biggest gates in UFC history.

At the peak of his popularity, Jordan walked away from basketball to try his hand at baseball. He signed with the Chicago White Sox and completed one season, primarily playing for the Birmingham Barons, a Double-A club.

McGregor did something similar, leaving behind the UFC and both his belts for a professional boxing match with Floyd Mayweather.

After their unsuccessful stints competing elsewhere, both men returned to the sport that made them megastars.

In the twilight of his career, Jordan played for the Washington Wizards for two seasons. The team went 60-75 in games where the Brooklyn native saw time on the court. McGregor, who also finds himself in the waning years of his own career, has lost four of his last five fights, including his 2017 matchup with ‘Money’ in the sweet science.

Thoughts?
