Alexa Grasso hand surgery ready for a trilogy title fight with Valentina Shevchenko in UFC

Undisputed flyweight champion, Alexa Grasso has successfully undergone surgery to address a fracture suffered in her right hand, and is already preparing for an expected trilogy championship clash with former titleholder and arch-rival, Valentina Shevchenko.

Grasso, the incumbent undisputed flyweight champion and pound-for-pound number one, most recently headlined Noche UFC back in September in an immediate title rematch with Krgysztan native, Shevchenko.

And emerging with her championship belt in tow, Mexican favorite, Grasso retained her title in a hugely-controversial and debated split decision draw with Shevchenko – with the two battling for five rounds.

Scooping the divisional crown in a massive upset victory at UFC 285 back in March in the pair’s co-headliner, Grasso rallied to submit Shevchenko with a third round neck crank, minting herself as flyweight champion for the first time in her organizational tenure.

Alexa Grasso undergoes surgery on fractured hand

Immediately pegged to fight Shevchenko in a trilogy title fight, Grasso has emerged from surgery to address a fracture to her right hand, and has vowed to enter her planned third scrap with the ex-champion fully prepared.

“What are the odds huh?” Alexa Grasso posted on her official Instagram account. “In the fight I fractured my hand, we are used to not letting the pain stop us in anything and although in hurt I didn’t think it was serious until I wanted to go back to training and I realized my hand was still very bad.”

“The surgery was a success thank you very much Doctor Arroyo and Doctor Zarate, you are angels,” Alexa Grasso continued. “I fully trust my healt in your hands #ANDSTILL and I know I will be MEGA ready for that trilogy.”

Valentina Shevchenko set for hand surgery ahead of trilogy fight with Alexa Grasso UFC

UFC flyweight Valentina Shevchenko will now undergo surgery after her recent fight with Alexa Grasso.

The rematch between Shevchenko and Grasso concluded in a rather odd draw. It was an unfortunate night for Shevchenko, who was unable to reclaim her 125lb title, and will not be side-lined due to a hand injury.

Following the fight, Shevchenko revealed via the MMA Hour that she broke her thumb in the very first round of the fight.

“I injured my hand in the first round,” Shevchenko said. “I hit with a cross and it landed on the side and affected my thumb. I could feel it right away, in the first round. That was the reason I could not finish my submission. This affected me to pull my grip. I had the position when I was on her back but I couldn’t close my arm because of the finger. But again, I’m not here trying to find excuses why that happened. If I would try to find excuses, I would say, ‘Oh my God, I broke my finger, I can’t continue the fight.’ But no, I fought four more rounds with a broken finger.” (H/T MMA Fighting)

Shevchenko will now be in a cast for a month, but will also have to have a couple months of no contact before she can get back to a title charge.

What’s next for Valentina Shevchenko?

While Shevchenko definitely would rather get the trilogy matchup, she also seems keen to fight other top contenders to prove her worth.

“If people want to see the trilogy, I’m here and I think it’s deserved as well. If they want to see me move up [in weight], I’m moving up. If they want to see something else, I want to fight anyone, because this is my mindset. I’m not choosing my opponent, I just go and fight,” said Shevchenko.

Demetrious Johnson was on the edge of his seat during Saturday’s epic title fight between 125-pound queen Alexa Grasso and former champion Valentina Shevchenko.

The reigning ONE flyweight world champion was taking in the festivities at Noche UFC from the comfort of his own home and offered a look at his live reaction to some of the evening’s more exciting moments. However, Johnson’s kids weren’t overly fond of the excitement that their father was exuding. In a clip, which you can see below courtesy of ‘Mighty Mouse’ on social media, the pound-for-pound great very loudly reacts to Raul Rosas Jr.’s epic knockdown of Terrence Mitchell in the opening seconds of their main card clash.

Johnson quickly apologizes to his daughter who can be heard crying in the background after being startled, but ‘Mighty Mouse’ couldn’t help himself. He did it once again when Alexa Grasso dropped Valentina Shevchenko in the second round of their instant classic.

Demetrious Johnson Shares His Take on the Big Moments at Noche UFC

Demetrious Johnson offered up his full reaction to the critically acclaimed event on his YouTube channel, which you can watch via an embed at the bottom of this article.

Noche UFC offered fans a spectacular night of fights from beginning to end. Unfortunately, much of it was forgotten after Octagon announcer Bruce Buffer revealed to the crowd that the main event clash between Grasso and Shevchenko had been ruled a split draw, courtesy of an inexplicable 10-8 score turned in by judge Mike Bell. It was revealed that Bell had ‘Bullet’ up 3-1 going into the final round. Had he scored the fifth in favor of Grasso via 10-9, Shevchenko would be a two-time world champion. Instead, Bell scored it 10-8 for Grasso, resulting in a 47-47 scorecard.

With the other two judges split on the winner, the bout was ruled an anticlimactic split draw.

Shevchenko was quick to condemn the score and even went so far as to blame the Mexican Independence Day setting for swaying the judge’s decision. Fans were not thrilled by those comments, but ‘Bullet’ proceeded to double down on that statement during the post-fight press event and during her appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani on Monday. Shevchenko also condemned Mike Bell’s 10-8 score, suggesting that it is a mistake he will have to live with for the rest of his life.

Erin Blanchfield calls for title fight with Alexa Grasso Noche UFC I should be next

Claiming potential trilogies between a championship holder and hopeful most definitely hold-up a division, surging flyweight challenger, Erin Blanchfield has staked her claim for a title affair with the incumbent Alexa Grasso after Noche UFC – laying out her winning résumé as of late.

Blanchfield, the current number two ranked flyweight contender, most recently turned in an impressive unanimous decision win over one-time title challenger, Taila Santos back in August in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night Singapore – improving on her so-far promotional-perfect run.

And touted to challenge for flyweight gold at the very least in the future, Blanchfield, who boasts an impressive 12-1 professional record, has been entertained as a potential opponent alongside Manon Fiorot by undisputed champion, Grasso, following her split draw decision against Valentina Shevchenko over the course of the weekend at Noche UFC.

Erin Blanchfield stakes claims for title fight with Alexa Grasso after Noche UFC

Furthermore, despite suggestions of a trilogy title fight between Grasso and Shevchenko amid their controversial draw, New Jersey native, Blanchfield has claimed she should “definitely” compete for flyweight spoils next.

“I feel like I definitely should be next,” Erin Blanchfield told The Schmo during a recent interview. “I feel like trilogies sometimes can clog up the divisions. Putting in some new blood for the title would be super helpful. I know Manon (Fiorot) is right behind me, so if anything, I could beat her up, too, if they [the UFC] did a trilogy next. But i want to be next.”

“That was a crazy fight,” Erin Blanchfield continued. “Sitting there, I thought Valentina (Shevchenko) won. I thought she did enough, I’ll definitely have to watch it back and see, but crazy fight. I think she did [win]. I’d have to watch it back to kind of remember what happened each roun and see what girl capitalized on what. But in the moment, I thought Valentina won.”

Prior to her decision win over Brazilian contender, Santos, former Invicta FC standout, Blanchfield had turned in consecutive submission win overs Molly McCann, and a hugely-impressive stoppage of former undisputed strawweight champion, Jessica Andrade in her premiere headlining clash.

Shavkat Rakhmonov eyes UFC 295 return Jack Della Maddalena fight I can beat him

Amid links to an eventual clash with undefeated welterweight finishing ace, Shavkat Rakhmonov – Jack Della Maddalena has been suggested as the ideal opponent to welcome the Uzbekistan native back to the Octagon, after the Australian previously claimed he believed he could beat the former.

Rakhmonov, the current number six ranked welterweight contender, has been sidelined from active competition since he stopped Geoff Neal with a third round standing rear-naked choke back in March at UFC 295 – improving his stunning professional record to 17-0, retaining his blistering 100 per cent finishing rate to boot.

And expected to return at Noche UFC over the course of the weekend, the highly-touted, Shavkat Rakhmonov saw a pivotal clash with former interim middleweight title challenger, Kelvin Gastelum fall to the wayside amid an injury during sparring for the latter.

Shavkat Rakhmonov teases return at either UFC 294 or UFC 295

Not receiving a re-worked pairing for the Mexican Independence Day card, Rakhmonov appeared to be tuning in to watch the above-mentioned, Della Maddalena’s split decision win over Kevin Holland, posting “I’m still available for UFC 294 or UFC 295.” on his official X account

In the midst of a stunning five fight winning spree, Rakhmonov, who has been widely tipped to contender for Octagon spoils in the future, has landed consecutive wins over Alex Oliveira, Michel Prazeres, Carlston Harris, Neil Magny, and the above-mentioned, Neal during his brief Octagon tenure.

And fans have immediately linked Rakhmonov to a potential comeback in November at Madison Square Garden against Australian talent, Della Maddalena – particularly after recent claims from the Aussie that he had the beating of the former.

“I think Shavkat (Rakhmonov) would be a good fight,” Jack Della Maddalena said. “I would like to test myself against him. I think I can beat him.” (H/T Essentially Sports)

Valentina Shevchenko shocked at 10-8 round at Noche UFC I couldn't believe it

Former undisputed flyweight champion, Valentina Shevchenko – amongst many others, has been left perplexed by a 10-8 round in favor of opponent, Alexa Grasso, in the fifth frame of their flyweight title rematch at Noche UFC over the course of the weekend.

Shevchenko, a former undisputed flyweight champion under the banner of the promotion, fought Mexican favorite, Grasso to a split draw decision (48-47, 47-48, 47-47) in a heralded title rematch between the two – questionably dropping a 10-8 to Grasso on judge, Michael Bell’s scorecard, resulting in the pair’s split draw judging.

However, many in the mixed martial arts community have disputed the round and judging from Bell, in particular, including Shevchenko, in fact, who even went as far as to boldly claim that the judges in attendance at Noche UFC were likely pressured due to the bout taking place on Mexican Independence Day.

Valentina Shevchenko questions 10-8 round loss in Noche UFC split draw

And in the immediate aftermath of her judging draw, competitive striker, Shevchenko claimed that was entirely surprise to learn she was on the wrong side of a 10-8 round scoring in the fifth frame.

“From my experience, a 10-8 is when one fighter completely cannot do nothing,” Valentina Shevchenko told assembled media after Noche UFC. “It’s like running around waiting, looking for an escape from the Octagon, it’s miserable. In the fifth round, it was, like, four minutes or however many minutes in stand-up, and she (Alexa Grasso) didn’t land one punch. She could only take the back position in the last minute, minute and a half. I don’t remember now. But even there, it was not damage. It wasn’t too much damage to succeed with this 10-8.”

“I couldn’t believe that it happened in this fifth round,” Valentina Shevchenko said of Michael Bell’s scorecard. “It’s a 10-8? It was surprising to me, very surprising.” (Transcribed by Bloody Elbow)

As far as a potential trilogy to settle their rivalry goes, however, Shevchenko may have to weigh-up new opponents, as Grasso has already noted her interest in fresh matchups against the likes of either Erin Blanchfield, or Manon Fiorot next.
