It’s looking more and more like Conor McGregor will not be returning to the Octagon this month.
After more than a year of rumors and reports, we appeared to finally be closing in on the Irishman’s “greatest comeback in combat sports history.” Then suddenly, it all seemingly fell apart. At this point, neither the UFC nor McGregor have offered any insight into the situation, leaving much of the reporting to Ariel Helwani.
Last week, Helwani said that there was “great positivity” that the fight would go down as scheduled on June 29. In the week since there’s been a complete 180° turn with the cancelation becoming more and more likely.
“UFC is not intentionally trying to drag out this 303 saga,” Helwani wrote on X. “They are burning the midnight oil trying to find a replacement solution. The issue is there aren’t a ton of options available right now. If there was they would have announced it all already and moved on.”
When one fan asked the MMA Hour host for clarification on the status of the fight, Helwani added that while the bout is not “100% off,” all signs currently point to someone not named Conor McGregor headlining on June 29.
“It’s not 100% off but I’d be extremely surprised at this point if it remains and they are actively negotiating with multiple camps to find a replacement,” he added. “It’s all up in the air still but they are proceeding at this time like they need a replacement.”
Ariel Helwani Offers Additional Insight into the Conor McGregor Drama
Helwani continued to field questions from fans on X, revealing that the cancelation of McGregor vs. Chandler is a “formality at this point” and that the promotion would not cancel the event like it did when Dan Henderson pulled out of his UFC 151 fight with Jon Jones back in 2012.
He also offered some insight into whether or not fans who have already purchased tickets will be eligible for a refund.

Amid reports overnight detailing how the planned UFC 303 headliner between Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler was now currently in “limbo” ahead of their showdown at the end of the month, fans on social media have claimed the Dubliner is most definitely out – after he shared footage of him speaking about the susceptibility of suffering injuries.
McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion under the banner of the promotion, has been sidelined from the Octagon since he fractured his left tibia and fibula back in 2021 in a doctor’s stoppage TKO defeat to Dustin Poirier.
And expected to take on Chandler this month during International Fight Week, McGregor’s ability to feature at UFC 303 is most certainly in a period of “limbo” at the time of publication – with the organization hoping to find a resolution in the form of a replacement fight.
Conor McGregor speaks publicly of injury worries
Overnight, speculation was rife regarding the status of the pairing, with rumors again swirling of an injury preventing McGregor from competing this month – after he shared footage of himself speaking about the chances of suffering an injury.
“I think the more resistance you train with, the less movement and the more injury,” Conor McGregor shared on his Instagram story. “But the less resistance you train with, the more movement and less injury.”
Just over the course of last weekend, prior to this week’s latest developments regarding the pairing, Chandler has confirmed his fight with McGregor would be taking place as planned at UFC 303 – before vowing to meet the Dubliner in a spectacular “car crash collision” fight on June 29. in Las Vegas.
Do you expect to see Conor McGregor fight Michael Chandler at UFC 303?
As it stands, Conor McGregor’s “greatest comeback in combat sports history” is up in the air as a new report from MMA Hour host Ariel Helwani suggests that the bout is “very much in limbo” a little more than two weeks out from fight night.
With the status of McGregor vs. Chandler up in the air, reigning bantamweight world champion Sean O’Malley is willing to step up and help save the card—so long as he gets to pick his opponent.
It didn’t take long for ‘The Problem Child’ to respond, accepting O’Malley’s challenge.
“MMA fight before Tyson,” Paul replied alongside a green checkmark. He also tagged the Professional Fighters League, the promotion expected to host Paul’s mixed martial arts debut sometime down the line.
It’s not the first time Paul has made mention of the drama surrounding the UFC’s pay-per-view event on June 29. Earlier this month, he claimed to have some insider information on the turmoil but refused to spill the tea.
“People keep asking me about Conor McGregor / UFC 303 Obviously, I know a lot about it, but I’m not going to talk about it publicly,” Paul posted. “For the first time probably ever in my life, I have no comment on something. That’s their world, and you know, they get pissed at me every time I talk about that stuff. Good for them and they’ll figure it out
Jake Paul already has a big money fight lined up for the fall
Of course, Paul has his own big-money match lined up. On November 15, he will step back inside the squared circle for a clash with former unified heavyweight boxing world champion ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson inside the 80,000-seat AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Originally the fight was scheduled to go down this summer on July 20, but after suffering a medical episode during a cross-country flight out of Miami, Tyson was forced to take a break from training. Fortunately, the incident was attributed to an ulcer flare-up and won’t affect the 58-year-old’s ability to compete later this year.
Paul is 9-1 in his pro boxing career with his lone loss coming against Tommy Fury, the younger brother of former WBO heavyweight titleholder Tyson Fury. Paul has since bounced back with a couple of first-round knockouts against a pair of no-name opponents under his Most Valuable Promotion’s banner.
Tyson, on the other hand, holds a career record of 50-6 with 44 of his victories coming by way of knockout. His scrap with Paul will be his first professional bout since a 2005 loss to Kevin McBride.
