UFC light heavyweight contender Anthony Smith offered some words of advice to Corey Anderson.

Anderson is coming off a TKO victory over Johnny Walker at UFC 244 earlier this month. In the process, he established himself as a potential next contender to face current champion Jon Jones.

However, he has long been vocal about not getting a title shot before and notably traded words with Smith as he felt “Lionheart” wasn’t deserving of his opportunity at Jones earlier this year.

Smith, on the other hand, believes it’s not that complicated — he earned his way to a title shot by beating the top contenders:

“I just beat the next guy,” Smith said in a recent interview (via MMA News). “When the UFC said, ‘Oh, what do you think’s next?’ ‘Whoever you think is next. Who do I gotta beat to get to a title shot?’ ‘Well, Volkan Oezdemir’s number 2.’ ‘Give me that f*cking guy then.’ And that’s what I did. Sometimes you gotta put your head down, and you gotta work, and stop complaining all the time.”

Anderson notably told the UFC to release him if he didn’t get the next title shot after Dominick Reyes. However, Smith advised him to simply keep working hard and continue to beat the fighters ranked above him.

“Overtime” can start by facing him:

“Just put your head down, and beat the next guy, and don’t complain about it,” Smith continued. “And then, every once in awhile, try to be a little bit exciting and stop talking sh*t about the guys that are doing it right.

“You want to talk sh*t about Thiago Santos? Thiago Santos got a title shot. You want to talk sh*t about me? I got a title shot. So instead of talking sh*t, maybe emulate what we do a little bit, try to get a goddamn finish, stop talking sh*t about the UFC and just beat the next guy. It’s that simple.

“I don’t understand this formula in his head, it’s like he’s doing brain surgery. It’s not that hard. I’m the next guy that you have to beat. It’s that simple.”

Do you agree with Smith?

Jon Jones had two choices for his next light heavyweight title defense. Those choices being between Dominick Reyes or Corey Anderson.

Anderson comes off a first-round TKO of Johnny Walker, while Reyes just knocked out former 185-pound king Chris Weidman in the first round of their UFC Boston headliner. Ultimately, Jones chose to fight Reyes next.

In the meantime, Anderson is content to wait and fight the winner, but he has also been called out by former title challenger and top-ranked 205-pounder Anthony Smith. Anderson has made it clear he has no interest in fighting Smith right now.

Speaking to the UFC Unfiltered podcast, Smith chimed in on the current situation at 205 pounds. In regards to Jones opting to fight Reyes over Anderson, Smith believes “Bones” simply picked the easier fight. (H/T MMA Junkie)

“I honestly think Jon probably chose the easier opponent between Corey Anderson and Dominick Reyes,” Smith said. “I think that Reyes is absolutely more dangerous, as far as explosiveness and size and his length.

“I think he may give Jon some problems on his feet a little bit and Jon will have to dodge some bullets. But look at everybody Jon’s beat – they’re one-dimensional, and that’s what Jon wants.”

Smith pointed to Reyes’ controversial decision win over Volkan Oezdemir to comment on what he believes are some holes in the heavy-handed prospect’s game.

“Like we’ve seen in the Volkan Oezdemir fight, Dominick Reyes isn’t necessarily dominant on the ground and his takedown defense isn’t that great,” Smith said.

“Even though he was able to stuff some of Weidman’s (takedowns) … he did have some improvements there, but Volkan Oezdemir took him down several times and Jon Jones is a much better wrestler than Volkan Oezdemir, that’s for sure.”

As for Anderson, Smith had nothing but praise for the veteran’s skillset, and deemed him a much more well-rounded fighter than Reyes.

“I think Corey is more well-rounded,” Smith said. “He’s got fundamental boxing. His kicking game isn’t super high level, but he keeps his hands in the right spot. He moves his head well. His wrestling is good.

“His takedown defense is really good. His top pressure is good. His cardio is phenomenal. Corey presents a lot more problems than Dominick Reyes does, so I do think that Jon picked the easier fight.”

Do you think Jones simply chose Reyes because he’s an easier matchup than Anderson?

Corey Anderson has been very vocal in regards to believing he deserves a title opportunity next. Anderson realizes Dominick Reyes is the likely next challenger for the strap, and is fine to wait and fight the winner of Reyes vs. Jon Jones.

However, he has also been called out by fellow top contender Anthony “Lionheart” Smith as well. Anderson has since claimed he has zero interest in that fight, and doubled down on those claims in a recent interview with MMA Fighting.

“Get off my wave baby, it’s my time,” Anderson said. “I called every single one of those people in front of me out. From Jon Jones to DC [Daniel Cormier], Jan Blachowicz, Anthony Smith, Thiago, Dominick Reyes, I called them all out for nine months straight, and every single one of them avoided it.

“They said other names, but nobody said me, or they had to say, ‘I don’t want to fight Corey Anderson.’ Well guess what? I don’t want to fight you now. It’s my time. I earned this. So after I get my shot whenever it is, then they can come fight me for the belt. Come on. Until then you’ve had a whole year to say yes, and you picked every other fight.

“Dominick Reyes, they offered me him, and now all of a sudden his nose is broke. Two days later he was looking for a fight. Everybody tries to avoid me. Now I’m hot, and they want to ride my waves. Get off my coattails.”

Anderson comes off of a big first-round TKO win over Johnny Walker at UFC 244 – a contender many believed would give Jones a run for his money if they ever shared the Octagon. As for Smith, he hasn’t fought since June when he submitted Alexander Gustafsson in Sweden.

Should Anderson take a fight with Smith, and beat him, there would be no denying him the next shot at the title.

Do you think Anderson should have to fight Smith before getting a title shot?

The New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) has fined three people following UFC 244 last week, per MMA Fighting.

Those being middleweight Kelvin Gastelum, his coach Rafael Cordeiro, and light heavyweight Corey Anderson. Gastelum was fined $1,000 for making contact with Cordeiro during his weigh-in. Also, Cordeiro himself has been fined $200.

Anderson was fined $10,000 for what the commission described as “unsportsmanlike and disorderly conduct” following his TKO victory over Johnny Walker in the featured preliminary bout. After his win, Anderson yelled at Walker before seemingly pushing the referee.

The NYSAC has suspended all those who have been fined indefinitely, until their fines have been paid in full. UFC 244 went down from Madison Square Garden in New York City. It was headlined by a Baddest Mother F*cker Championship fight between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz.

Masvidal wound up winning the main event via TKO in the third round due to a Doctor Stoppage. As for the co-main event, Gastelum was defeated by Darren Till via split decision.

What do you think about the NYSAC fining Gastelum, Cordeiro, and Anderson?

Corey Anderson will likely not be receiving the next shot at UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.

Earlier today (Thurs. November 7, 2019), Jones took to Twitter and revealed he’ll fight Dominick Reyes next, who Jones said is “definitely” the more dangerous of the pair. Anderson has offered his reaction to that comment already.

However, Anderson also spoke to Sirius XM’s Fight Nation, and addressed fellow top contender Anthony “Lionheart” Smith calling him out. Anderson said he has zero interest in that fight. (H/T BJPenn.com)

“I have no interest in fighting Anthony Smith. I called Anthony Smith out after I fought at UFC 232 (beating Ilir Latifi), and he answered back like two minutes back and said ‘No.’ Now this time he’s gotta wait,” Smith said.

Anderson noted that he’s unsure who he’ll be fighting next, but doesn’t see any other fight for him that makes sense except for Jones.

“I don’t see anybody in front of me. That’s the point. I’ve beaten Jan Blachowicz. I’ve beat everybody who’s fought for the title, I’ve beaten all these guys, just give me my due.

“I’ll let my manager figure out the rest of it. I’m just here to fight. I’m going to train and I’ll be ready,” Anderson said.

What do you think about Anderson having no interest in fighting Smith next?
