Corey Anderson could find himself closer to a title opportunity with another win but he isn’t obsessing over Jon Jones. Anderson vs. Blachowicz 2 will be held inside the Santa […]
Corey Anderson still believes he is the one who will eventually dethrone UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. Jones defended his title after a close unanimous decision victory over Dominick Reyes at UFC 247 this past weekend. That was despite many believing Reyes had done enough to get the win. Although Reyes put up an […]
Corey Anderson still believes he is the one who will eventually dethrone UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.
Although Reyes put up an impressive performance, Anderson believes it was more of a case of Jones showing that he was in fact, beatable.
“I knew he was beatable,” Anderson told TMZ (via MMA Junkie). “I was the one that always said, ‘I know I can beat Jon, I know ways to beat him.’ I see the holes, I see what you got to do to beat him, and Dom went out there and did pretty much a lot of it. He went out there and did another blueprint of things that I had already seen, but I see so much more.”
Anderson was notably impressed with how Reyes performed. “The Devastator” seemingly did enough to win the first three stanzas in many observers’ eyes but faded in the championship rounds.
That won’t happen with “Overtime” who believes he has more tools than Reyes to trouble and eventually dethrone Jones:
“I got more in my tank, and I got more in my style in the way I fight that Dom doesn’t that I think is going to be a problem for him,” Anderson explained. “But at the end, I’m happy that Jon got the win because I get to be the one to dethrone him.”
However, Anderson needs to get past Jan Blachowicz first. The light heavyweight contenders battle in the main event of UFC Rio Rancho this weekend with the winner likely being next in line to face Jones:
“… I got to wait and see what happens this weekend,” Anderson added. “This is my championship fight. I got to go out there, do what Corey does and put on a dominant show. It’s five rounds, just like it’s a title fight.”

Things didn’t go Johnny Walker’s way in his last outing this past November. Walker suffered a first-round TKO loss to Corey Anderson at UFC 244 in Madison Square Garden.
It was a stunning defeat for the young Brazilian prospect, who was streaking through the light heavyweight division, and likely could’ve received an early title opportunity against Jon Jones with an explosive finish over Anderson. However, it was Anderson who left with the big win instead.
”I don’t accept this loss because I can beat him,” Walker said. “I know that. But I had a little problem during the fight, fight week as well, before the fight some stress with my team. So I learned a lot and it’s not going to happen again. I don’t train with my old coach any more because the problem is with him.
“During fight week he stressed me out twice and before the fight he almost hurt my shoulder because he don’t know how to hold the pad properly. We don’t match too well on fight week. For a long time I start having these, you know, because we live together, about respect as well. Somethings are not getting met. So now I have no coach and I’m trying to go to Tristar and look for a new coach and new experience and new guys. And I’m ready to restart again.”
Now, Walker will take on Nikita Krylov at UFC Brasilia in March. Ahead of the matchup, he’s working on all aspects of his game to ensure he doesn’t see the same result as his last outing in Madison Square Garden.
“I’m gonna work in everything,” Walker said. “Wrestling, jiu jitsu, strike, box, everything that I can work. I always learn and improve myself everyday. So I’ll be better and I’ll be back. Soon. The 14th of March. Brazil. My time to get the bonus of the night again.”
