Cory Sandhagen now fights Rob Font at UFC Nashville in headliner August

Cory Sandhagen will now face Rob Font after both of their opponents pulled out for the pairs upcoming fights.

Cory Sandhagen was scheduled to face Umar Nurmagomedov on August 5 in the main event of a fight night. However, the latter has been forced out from the contest after suffering a shoulder injury during a training session. It did not take long for them to find a replacement, enlisting the help of Font to fill in for the 27-year-old Dagestani.

This was only made possible however, after Font’s original opponent, Song Yadong, pulled out from their August 19 fight at UFC 292. Nothing has been made public regarding Yadong’s injury and when he is expected to make a full return.

Cory Sandhagen Vs. Rob Font set for main event fight

In a story which was first reported by ESPN on Thursday, and further confirmed by MMAJunkie, Sandhagen and Font will fight one another in the main event slot on August 5. The event will be held in Nashville, Tennessee and the clash will be contested at a 140lb catchweight. The card will also feature a clash between former champion, Jessica Andrade and the undefeated Tatiana Suarez. The rest of the undercard will host a cast of experienced veterans and young up-and-comers such Dustin Jacoby, Ovince St. Preux, Billy Quarantillo and Jake Hadley.

Sandhagen will be searching for his third successive victory, defeating Yadong and Marlon Vera, after dropping two back-to-back losses in competitive and highly entertaining clashes with Petr Yan and T.J. Dillashaw.

As for Font, he will look to build off his first round stoppage victory over the surging Adrian Yanez in April. While he dropped two decisive losses to Vera and Jose Aldo before that, Font has also captured victories over Cody Garbrandt, Marlon Moraes and Sergio Pettis.

Who will win come fight night, Cory Sandhagen or Rob Font?

Former UFC champion reacts to Umar Nurmagomedov pulling out for his fight against Corey Sandhagen.

Nurmagomedov was around six weeks out from the biggest opportunity of his blossoming career, as the 27-year-old was scheduled to face Sandhagen on August 5. After numerous cries that no one was accepting to fight him, Nurmagomedov would have the opportunity to leapfrog half the division with Sandhagen being ranked No.4.

However, the No.11 ranked Nurmagomedov has been forced to withdraw from the contest after suffering a shoulder injury. The news of course was disappointing to fans, not only because of the intriguing matchup not playing out, but also to not getting to see the highly touted Nurmagomedov the anticipated step up in class.

Conor McGregor reacts to Umar Nurmagomedov’s withdrawal

It’s no secret that Conor McGregor and the Nurmagomedov clan do not see eye-to-eye, and it also probably wouldn’t shock you to learn that Conor McGregor took the opportunity to land a quick jab at the young Nurmagomedov’s expense.

In a now-deleted Tweet, the Irishman sent out the message ‘C’est de famille’, translating to ‘runs in the family’.

McGregor has been vocal throughout his career about his disdain for pulling out of fights, in fact refusing to do so on multiple occasions with significant injuries. Even so, it is unfair to criticize Nurmagomedov, or any fighter for that matter, for pulling out due to serious injuries.

There has been no official time frame for when Nurmagomedov is expected to return to action, and it will be a serious blow to the Dagestani after building up a good run of form and activity last year.

The UFC have now found a replacement for Nurmagomedov in the form of Rob Font, who will now fight Sandhagen over five rounds.

Both Cory Sandhagen vs. Song Yadong And Giga Chikadze vs. Sodiq Yusuff Made official For Sep. 17 Fight Night Card

During last night’s UFC broadcast, the promotion announced both their main event and co-main event slots for their UFC Fight Night card on September 17th.

The main event will be host to an intriguing bantamweight matchup between former interim title challenger, Corey Sandhagen and one of the best young talents the UFC has to offer in 24-year old Song Yadong.

Sandhagen is coming off two back-to-back losses, but both have been extremely competitive affairs against two former 135lb champions in Petr Yan and T.J. Dillashaw. Before this skid, Sandhagen had produced some highlight-reel performances knocking out both Marlon Moraes and Frankie Edgar within five months. Sanhagen also holds credible wins over Raphael Assuncao, John Linekar, and Mario Bautista.

Sanding opposite ‘The Sandman’ will be the highly touted Yadong, who has been competing in the UFC since he was just 19 years old. The Chinese 135lber already has some impressive names on his record such as Marlon Vera and Casey Kenny and most recently savagely knocked out a former title challenger in Moraes.

Giga Chikadze Vs. Sodiq Yusuff

In the co-main, No.8 Giga Chikadze and No.12 Sodiq Yusuff are set to do battle over three rounds. Chikadze will hope to continue the form he was on before he met Calvin Kattar, who would hand him his first loss in the UFC. Before this bout, the 33-year-old Georgian held a seven-fight win streak, capped off by back-to-back knockout victories over Cub Swanson and Edson Barboza.

Dana White Contender Series Alum, Yusuff will now have the chance to jump into the top-10 rankings in what is the biggest fight of his career. ‘Super’ Sodiq holds a 5-1 record in the UFC, having only lost to Arnold Allen but would bounce back with a win over Alex Caceres back in March.

Aljamain Sterling Has No Regrets About Getting His Neck Surgery

Aljamain Sterling

Aljamain Sterling has spoken about the neck surgery that he needed which prevented him from defending his title against Petr Yan at UFC 267.

Sterling had surgery on his neck after his fight with Yan at UFC 259. Sterling won the title from Yan by way of a disqualification after Yan landed an illegal knee while Sterling was still on the ground. Many MMA fans had a lot to say about how Sterling won the gold, mostly because Yan was pretty dominant in the lead up to that devastating moment.

A lot of fans have even proclaimed that Sterling may have been faking the injury so he didn’t have to go on with the fight. After the fight, Sterling went under the knife and thought he would be back in time for UFC 267. That didn’t work out and Corey Sandhagen has stepped in for him in an interim title fight against Yan.

Sterling recently appeared on the ‘The Fighter vs The Writer’ and had this to say about his injury, “I couldn’t be happier with the decision I made. To wake up, sleep, stand, and walk and not have constant radiating pain down my neck, it’s life-changing. The quality of life is so much higher. I can’t believe I didn’t do this sooner, if I’m being honest.” (MMA Fighting)

“Just to clarify — I know a lot of people thought I was injured. I’m not injured. I don’t know how many times that I can say those exact words. I’m not injured. I had a major neck surgery that just needed more time for the neurological stuff to get to where it’s supposed to be. It didn’t happen fast enough in six months. Obviously, it makes sense. It’s a big procedure. It’s something that I was dealing with for such a long time that once I finally got the problem taken care of, you need time to recover and time to heal. Like relearning for the nerves, to reconnect to all the muscles and do what they’re supposed to do so that they start firing.

Sterling is shooting to return sometime between February at the earliest, and March at the latest. It will be interesting to see who Sterling will be fighting, since technically he has a win over both Yan and Sandhagen. Although, it would be a shame if we don’t see Yan and Sterling square off in a rematch so many have been waiting for.

T.J. Dillashaw Plans To Beat ‘Douche’ Cory Sandhagen, Reclaim 135lb Title

T.J. Dillashaw

T.J. Dillashaw will make his return to the octagon against bantamweight contender Corey Sandhagen as the main event of UFC Fight Night on May 8th. Coming off his USADA suspension, Dillashaw is not here for the trash-talking Sandhagen is sending his way.

In a recent interview with Brett Okamoto for ESPN, Dillashaw addressed Sandhagen’s comments about his suspension and title contention. (H/T MMAFighting.com)

“He’s become a little bit of a douche lately, talking that s*** which he’s gotta do, that’s the name of the game, but I like Cory Sandhagen. I like all of his coaches, I like Elevation Fight Team, but that’s the business. We’re gonna get out there, we’re gonna handle it, and I’m gonna come back and get my belt.”

While showing Sandhagen some respect, Dillashaw went on to further explain his frustration. “Oh just talking s*** about how me failing a drug test and then something about me taking the worst steroid you could possibly take. Which I wasn’t even taking a steroid,” Dillashaw added. “Just running his mouth on certain interviews and stuff of things he knows is complete nonsense. Just pumping himself up and making himself feel like he’s got a chance in this fight.”

Sandhagen’s comments have struck a nerve with the former champ, likely since they previously trained together. Things went south when Sandhagen’s post-fight comments after his KO of Frankie Edgar threw shade at Dillashaw. Sandhagen even went further to insinuate that Dillashaw didn’t want to fight him. Sandhagen suggested Dillashaw was ducking him by getting the title shot to then refuse to fight him if he won.

Now that the fight is official, Dillashaw is excited about his return. “It wasn’t the only option, but it is the one that is great,” Dillashaw commented. “I love this fight. He’s got a lot of hype behind him. He has two good wins, people are blowing him up right now, but it’s such a good fight for me to get right back on top, right where I left off. I’ll have the belt around my waist by the end of the year.”

Whether or not Dillashaw will regain title in 2021 remains to be seen. However, fight fans everywhere should be excited for the fireworks to come from his match-up with Sandhagen.

Do you think T.J. Dillashaw defeats Corey Sandhagen on May 8th?
