UFC bantamweight contender Cory Sandhagen is looking past former champion TJ Dillashaw in his upcoming fight, but there’s no doubt that he has title aspirations and big goals for his UFC career.
Sandhagen spoke in an exclusive interview with LowKickMMA’s James Lynch and provided an insight into his life and career in MMA. He will face Dillashaw at UFC on ESPN 27 later this month at the UFC Apex in a massive fight in the bantamweight division.
Sandhagen is also open to a potential number-one contender fight with Rob Font if he can get past Dillashaw in his next fight, but has a title shot in mind in case the negotiations between the champion, Aljamain Sterling, and Petr Yan for their rematch falls through.
“Everything under the sun has crossed my mind,” Sandhagen said. “A dream possibility would be that I fight for the title right afterward. But I have no problem fighting another tough guy after TJ to help build my name value. Right now, I’m working on becoming the best athlete I can be, and gaining experience is very important to me too.”
Sandhagen is looking to win his third straight fight since his devastating first-round submission loss to Sterling at UFC 250 last summer. He has accumulated knockouts over former title challengers Frankie Edgar and Marlon Moraes since his first loss in the UFC.
Dillashaw is making his return to the UFC octagon after a two-year hiatus from competition stemming from his USADA suspension for EPO use. Before that, he was widely regarded as one of the best fighters in the world and served as the UFC bantamweight champion after upending Cody Garbrandt to earn the title, and once more in his first title defense during his second reign as the belt holder.
Sandhagen vs. Dillashaw is one of the most highly-anticipated fights of the year and an extremely important fight in the UFC’s bantamweight title picture. Both Sandhagen and Dillashaw have a lot on the line leading up to their bout at the UFC Apex.
Do you think Cory Sandhagen deserves a title shot if he beats TJ Dillashaw?

Cory Sandhagen is a fan of Sean O’Malley’s style, but not his recent track record of opponents when it comes to his time in the UFC to this point.
Sandhagen spoke with LowKickMMA ahead of his highly-anticipated main event bout with former bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw at UFC on ESPN 27 later this month. O’Malley is slated to face Kris Moutinho on the UFC 264 main card, who will make his promotional debut after Louis Smolka had to withdraw from the bout due to an undisclosed injury in fight camp.
Many around the MMA community have been frustrated with the lack of competition that O’Malley will face on paper at the upcoming pay-per-view, and Sandhagen is one of them.
“I’d like to see him fight some tougher guys,” Sandhagen told LowKickMMA’s James Lynch. “I don’t know how much of that is on him, or on the UFC. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt because when I hear him speak, you can tell he wants to be a champ.
“But he’s fighting guys that won’t make him a champion. I don’t think too many guys in the division stepped up so he was stuck with a debuting guy.”
Moutinho will make his UFC debut on short notice after brief stints with Cage Fury and CES MMA. This will by far be the biggest stage that he’s been on to this point in his career on the biggest card of the summer, featuring the trilogy between Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor.
O’Malley has won four of his last five fights, with his lone loss coming against Marlon Vera at UFC 252. He is coming off a dominant knockout win over Thomas Almeida at UFC 260 after a seven-month hiatus.
O’Malley vs. Moutinho will still garner the attention of viewers, but not nearly the excitement as opposed to if O’Malley faced someone like Tim Elliott or Ricky Simon. Regardless, all eyes will be on O’Malley as he attempts to continue his rise through the UFC.
What do you think about Cory Sandhagen’s comments about Sean O’Malley?

Cory Sandhagen isn’t looking past his upcoming fight with former bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw later this month, but he’s more than willing to fight another top contender with a win in his next fight.
Sandhagen spoke in an exclusive interview with LowKickMMA’s James Lynch and gave an analysis of where he sees himself in the UFC bantamweight title picture. While a title shot would be preferred, he wouldn’t mind a fight with Rob Font following his dominant unanimous decision win over Cody Garbrandt at UFC Vegas 27.
“I’d be open to a Rob Font fight, but a dream possibility would be a fight for the title after this,” Sandhagen said. “He looked great against [Cody Garbrandt] and I was really happy for him. He had a breakout performance and I know how hard it is to have that breakout fight.”
“I have no problem fighting another top guy after this to make my name value even greater. We’ll see what the UFC says and in the meantime, I need to make sure I’m the best possible athlete and fighter I can be.”
Sandhagen has been on a roll since his devastating loss to Aljamain Sterling at UFC 250. He is coming off of back-to-back knockout wins over former UFC title challengers Marlon Moraes and Frankie Edgar leading up to his fight with Dillashaw.
After a two-year hiatus from the sport, Dillashaw will make his long-awaited return to competition as he hopes to make his way back open to the title. Dillashaw was issued a suspension from USADA for testing positive for EPO following his loss to Henry Cejudo for the UFC flyweight title in January 2019.
A fight between Font and Sandhagen would be extremely entertaining, as both are very diverse strikers and have a plethora of viral finishes on their feet. Sterling is expected to make his first title defense in a rematch with former champion Petr Yan later this year, although no formal announcement has been made.
What are your thoughts on a potential Rob Font vs. Cory Sandhagen fight depending on what happens with the TJ Dillashaw bout?
