Sandhagen, who currently holds the number four rank in the official bantamweight pile, most recently turned in his second consecutive victory, landing a one-sided split decision win over the then-streaking, Marlon Vera at UFC Fight Night San Antonio back in April.

The victory followed a prior dominant win over Song Yadong, defeating the Chinese upstart with an eventual fourth round doctor’s stoppage TKO win in another headliner – this time at the UFC Apex facility.

And remaining on this weekend’s card in ‘The Volunteer State’, Sandhagen was initially scheduled to fight the surging, Umar Nurmagomedov in Nashville, until an injury forced the Russian talent to withdraw from proceedings.

Pulled from a planned UFC 292 fight with the aforenoted, Yadong in Boston next weekend, East Coast favorite, Font books his fourth headlining clash in his last five Octagon pairings in his impromptu pairing against Colorado native, Sandhagen this weekend.

Snapping a run of back-to-back losses to both former featherweight kingpin, Jose Aldo, and common-opponent, Vera, New England Cartel staple, Font most recently snapped his losing skid with an impressive first round win over Adrian Yanez at UFC 287 back in April. The victory earned Font a Performance of the Night bonus to boot.

However, despite his recent turn of form, Font has some ways to go in convincing the bookies ahead of his return, with Sandhagen currently riding a -333 betting favorite line with Betway to secure victory this weekend in his pursuit of an undisputed bantamweight title fight.

‘The Sandman’ will look to continue his march toward the top of the bantamweight top ten as he meets undefeated submission machine Umar Nurmagomedov on August 5. Coming off impressive back-to-back wins against Song Yadong and Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera, Cory Sandhagen will look to stop the hype train Nurmagomedov has been riding since making his promotional debut in 2021.

Of course, that will be much easier said than done as Nurmagomedov makes his fifth walk to the Octagon with a perfect 16-0 record, including seven wins by way of submission. As is the case with every man that shares his famous last name, Umar Nurmagomedov plans to put his world-class grappling skills on display en route to a debut in the division’s top five. However, Nurmagomedov’s name and ground game won’t intimidate ‘The Sandman’ who is more than confident in his own skills on the mat.

“Everyone still thinks I suck at wrestling, even though, when you think about it, I can’t really think of a time outside of the (Aljamain) Sterling fight where I was on my back for longer than maybe five or 10 seconds,” Sandhagen told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto. “The time where I think I was on my back for the longest was against (TJ) Dillashaw, and I ripped his knee in half. So everyone still thinks my grappling isn’t that good.

“The Dagestanis kind of have this aura of being these superhuman people still, and that’s like, not true,” Sandhagen continued. “They’re just doing different things that people haven’t picked up on yet. I have a really good and smart team of coaches to help me navigate that, and then I also have a decent amount of training partners from that type of world that can also help me get really good at it too” (h/t MMA News).

Cory Sandhagen is 4-2 in his last six outings, coming up short against former bantamweight world champions Petr Yan and T.J. Dillashaw. With a win over Umar Nurmagomedov, ‘The Sandman’ could stake his claim for a 135-pound title opportunity once reigning champion Aljamain Sterling settles some business with No. 2 ranked contender Sean O’Malley at UFC 292 in August.

Scoring his second successive victory with his judging win over Chone favorite, Vera, Sandhagen – who has suffered a submission loss to current bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling, offered to fight the Uniondale native’s teammate, Dvalishvili next.

“Merab (Dvalishvili), you’re hungry? Well I’ve got something for you to eat,” Cory Sandhagen said during his post-fight Octagon interview. “And it don’t taste good.”

On Saturday night, Marlon Vera and Cory Sandhagen stepped into the main event spotlight for a high-stakes bantamweight showdown at The AT&T Center.

Going into the bout riding a four-fight win streak, ‘Chito’ Vera finds himself on the cusp of a UFC bantamweight title opportunity. Hoping to stop Vera’s momentum was Sanghagen, a division staple who has gone 3-2 in his last five with wins over Marlon Moraes, Frankie Edgar, and Song Yadong. ‘The Sandman’ could add his name to a very short list of potential title contenders with a win over the No. 3 ranked Marlon Vera.

As expected, Cory Sandhagen was the aggressor early as Vera is a notoriously slow starter inside the Octagon. Sandhagen put his calf kicks to work early, but picked up the pace nearly the halfway point of the first, moving in for a takedown. Sandhagen works Vera to the canvas and immediately begins firing away with heavy shots and slicing elbows through the end of the round. Sandhagen’s aggressiveness continued in the second with him pushing the pace and taking things to the ground a minute into the round. Vera was able to get back to his feet with 80 seconds left in the round but offered little offense after 10 minutes.

Marlon Vera picked up the pace in the third, mixing up his kicks and punches in an attempt to make the fight much more competitive. However, Sandhagen was still clearly in control, mixing up his strikes with the occasional takedown attempt. As a result, Vera was unable to truly get his offense going through the third and fourth rounds. In the final five minutes, Sandhagen relied heavily on his wrestling early, tying up and taking down Vera. ‘Chito’ fought his way back up, but was still unable to land anything dangerous. With 10 seconds left, Vera finally kicked it into high gear, but by then it was too little too late.

With the Octagon returning stateside for the first time in a week, the UFC most recently touched down in London, England for UFC 286 – with undisputed welterweight champion, Leon Edwards successfully defending his championship in a trilogy rubber match win over former gold holder, Kamaru Usman.

And this weekend, bantamweight division striking aces, Vera, and Sandhagen share the battlefield in search of weight class supremacy – and potentially, their first respective opportunities at undisputed spoils.

Headlining once again, last time out, Vera managed to stop former two-time undisputed bantamweight champion, Dominick Cruz with a stunning fourth round high kick KO back in August in the main event of UFC Fight Night San Diego.

For Sandhagen, the Eliot Marshall trainee returned to the winner’s enclosure with an impressive fourth round win of his own back in September – taking out Song Yadong with a doctor’s stoppage TKO victory at the UFC Apex facility.

And at the time of publication, surging Chone native, Vera (+140) is sat as a betting underdog, albeit short, to defeat Colorado native, Sandhagen (-160) – per BetWay, with the due facing a pivotal matchup to determine the potential next title challenger at the bantamweight limit.

4-0 in his last four Octagon walks, Vera, a trainee under the renowned Jason Parillo – managed to add the above-mentioned Cruz to a winning streak which includes a win over Davey Grant, and Rob Font – as well as a front kick KO win over former undisputed lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar.

Challenging for interim bantamweight spoils on short notice in October 2021, Sandhagen dropped a decision loss to Petr Yan, which followed a close, debated summer defeat against former two-time bantamweight champion, T.J. Dillashaw.

Himself holding impressive knockout victories over the likes of Marlon Moraes, Iuri Alcantara, and common-foe, Edgar – Sandhagen may stick out at the moment as the outright betting favorite, however, the top-5 contender is a +500 underdog to hand Vera his first knockout loss. The Ecuadorian, on the other hand, has drawn lines himself – quite high, as -375 to finish Sandhagen with strikes.
