Former interim bantamweight title challenger, Cory Sandhagen has revealed a hilarious reason for accepting a fight with the undefeated, Umar Nurmagomedov – atop an upcoming UFC Fight Night Nashville card in August.

Sandhagen, the current #4 ranked division contender, is slated to headline his second consecutive event of this year, having most recently taken main event status at UFC Fight Night San Antonio back in March – defeating Ecuadorian fan-favorite, Marlon Vera in a split decision win.

The victory came as the Elevation Fight Team staple’s second successively to boot, having previously stopped Song Yadong with an eventual fourth round doctor’s stoppage in a headliner at the UFC Apex facility last year.

And now slated to return against the undefeated, Nurmagomedov, who has so far found opponents hard to come by during his five-fight Octagon tenure, Sandhagen, who puts his status as a top contender on the line against the Russian in Tennessee this summer, gave a rib-tickling reason for taking the bout.

“Hey, I know you guys saw the announcement,” Cory Sandhagen said in a video posted on his official social media. “I’m fighting August 5. against Umar Nurmagomedov. I’m getting a lot of haters, saying, ‘Why would you fight this far down in the rankings?’ He’s going to beat my ass, blah, blah, blah. Two reasons; one, Umar is a great fighter, and I’m not trying to be world champion if I’m not the actual best in the entire world. So fighting Umar is a great challenge and I accept it.”

“And number one;” Cory Sandhagen continued. “Because I’m a beast, b*tch. That’s why. Peace, I’ll see you guys in Nashville.”

Fighting for a potential slot in the top-5 of the bantamweight ranks, Nurmagomedov, the cousin of former undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov – has landed a stunning 16-0 professional record throughout his career.

Most recently featuring back in January of this year in ‘Sin City’, Nurmagomedov stopped the highly-touted Brazilian veteran, Raoni Barcelos with a blistering body kick KO win.

Off the back of his impressive victory over the surging Marlon Vera atop last night’s UFC San Antonio card in the ‘Lone Star State’ – Cory Sandhagen has called for a bantamweight title-eliminator against the #1 ranked, Merab Dvalishvili next.

Headlining his second consecutive Fight Night billed card, Sandhagen, who most recently secured an impressive TKO win over Song Yadong back in September of last year, turned in another impressive performance in Texas this weekend.

Displaying his often overlooked grappling and wrestling chops, Colorado native, Cory Sandhagen battled to a rather one-sided, split decision (47-48, 50-45, 49-46) over the #3 ranked challenger, Vera.

Scoring his second successive victory with his judging win over Chone favorite, Vera, Sandhagen – who has suffered a submission loss to current bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling, offered to fight the Uniondale native’s teammate, Dvalishvili next.

“Merab (Dvalishvili), you’re hungry? Well I’ve got something for you to eat,” Cory Sandhagen said during his post-fight Octagon interview. “And it don’t taste good.”

Welcoming the potential number one contender decider clash, Dvalishvili replied to Sandhagen’s call on Instagram – writing, “The Machine says let’s go.”

In the midst of his own lenghty winning run under the promotion’s banner, Tbilisi native, Dvalishvili most recently took out common-foe, former undisputed bantamweight titleholder, Petr Yan in a clear-cut decision win at UFC Las Vegas earlier this month

Throughout his Octagon tenure, Sandhagen, who has only suffered losses against former champions, Sterling, Yan, and a close decision loss to T.J. Dillashaw, clutches the #5 ranked at the time of publication.

During his UFC stint, the Elevation Fight Team mainstay has defeated the likes of John Lineker, Raphael Assuncao, Marlon Moraes, and former lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar.

As for champion, Sterling, the undisputed gold holder headlines UFC 288 in May – attempting his third title defense against the returning former two-weight champion, Henry Cejudo.

On Saturday night, Marlon Vera and Cory Sandhagen stepped into the main event spotlight for a high-stakes bantamweight showdown at The AT&T Center.

Going into the bout riding a four-fight win streak, ‘Chito’ Vera finds himself on the cusp of a UFC bantamweight title opportunity. Hoping to stop Vera’s momentum was Sanghagen, a division staple who has gone 3-2 in his last five with wins over Marlon Moraes, Frankie Edgar, and Song Yadong. ‘The Sandman’ could add his name to a very short list of potential title contenders with a win over the No. 3 ranked Marlon Vera.

As expected, Cory Sandhagen was the aggressor early as Vera is a notoriously slow starter inside the Octagon. Sandhagen put his calf kicks to work early, but picked up the pace nearly the halfway point of the first, moving in for a takedown. Sandhagen works Vera to the canvas and immediately begins firing away with heavy shots and slicing elbows through the end of the round. Sandhagen’s aggressiveness continued in the second with him pushing the pace and taking things to the ground a minute into the round. Vera was able to get back to his feet with 80 seconds left in the round but offered little offense after 10 minutes.

Marlon Vera picked up the pace in the third, mixing up his kicks and punches in an attempt to make the fight much more competitive. However, Sandhagen was still clearly in control, mixing up his strikes with the occasional takedown attempt. As a result, Vera was unable to truly get his offense going through the third and fourth rounds. In the final five minutes, Sandhagen relied heavily on his wrestling early, tying up and taking down Vera. ‘Chito’ fought his way back up, but was still unable to land anything dangerous. With 10 seconds left, Vera finally kicked it into high gear, but by then it was too little too late.

Official Result: Cory Sandhagen def. Marlon Vera via split decision (47-48, 50-45, 49-46)

Taking main event honors at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas – a bantamweight division title-eliminator between the surging #3 ranked division challenger, Marlon Vera, and one-time interim championship challenger, the #5 rated, Cory Sandhagen closes the curtain on the organization’s return to the United States.

With the Octagon returning stateside for the first time in a week, the UFC most recently touched down in London, England for UFC 286 – with undisputed welterweight champion, Leon Edwards successfully defending his championship in a trilogy rubber match win over former gold holder, Kamaru Usman.

And this weekend, bantamweight division striking aces, Vera, and Sandhagen share the battlefield in search of weight class supremacy – and potentially, their first respective opportunities at undisputed spoils.

Headlining once again, last time out, Vera managed to stop former two-time undisputed bantamweight champion, Dominick Cruz with a stunning fourth round high kick KO back in August in the main event of UFC Fight Night San Diego.

For Sandhagen, the Eliot Marshall trainee returned to the winner’s enclosure with an impressive fourth round win of his own back in September – taking out Song Yadong with a doctor’s stoppage TKO victory at the UFC Apex facility.

And at the time of publication, surging Chone native, Vera (+140) is sat as a betting underdog, albeit short, to defeat Colorado native, Sandhagen (-160) – per BetWay, with the due facing a pivotal matchup to determine the potential next title challenger at the bantamweight limit.

4-0 in his last four Octagon walks, Vera, a trainee under the renowned Jason Parillo – managed to add the above-mentioned Cruz to a winning streak which includes a win over Davey Grant, and Rob Font – as well as a front kick KO win over former undisputed lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar.

Challenging for interim bantamweight spoils on short notice in October 2021, Sandhagen dropped a decision loss to Petr Yan, which followed a close, debated summer defeat against former two-time bantamweight champion, T.J. Dillashaw.

Himself holding impressive knockout victories over the likes of Marlon Moraes, Iuri Alcantara, and common-foe, Edgar – Sandhagen may stick out at the moment as the outright betting favorite, however, the top-5 contender is a +500 underdog to hand Vera his first knockout loss. The Ecuadorian, on the other hand, has drawn lines himself – quite high, as -375 to finish Sandhagen with strikes.

Two of the most poised and cerebral strikers the bantamweight division currently has to offer, Vera, and Sandhagen are not currently expected to not just get each other out of their – but neither are backed to do so in timely fashion, with a stoppage between the two inside 60 seconds coming in as high as +5,000.

Unbeaten in the last thee years, RVCA mainstay, Vera dropped a close decision loss to former undisputed featherweight champion, Jose Aldo back in 2020 – which returned him to the losing circle after an eye-catching first round knockout win over the current #2 ranked contender, Sean O’Malley

Vera and Sandhagen’s showdown this weekend comes ahead of a busy schedule at 135lbs, with undisputed bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling slated to defend his crown against former two-weight best, Henry Cejudo at UFC 288 in May.

Number four ranked UFC bantamweight contender Cory Sandhagen has already fought many of the top fighters in his weight class.

His last outing against Umar Nurmagomedov was seen by many as a title eliminator but after losing that contest, he’s back to the drawing board.

In the aftermath of the division crowning a new champion this past weekend at UFC 306, “The Sandman” has called for a fight that a lot of fans have wanted to see for some time.

Unfortunately for Sandhagen, it looks like former champ Sean O’Malley is going to be taking some substantial time off – meaning that if he wants to stay active, he’ll need to look elsewhere.

Cory Sandhagen Says That Henry Cejudo Isn’t Interested In Fighting Unless It’s A Perfect Opportunity For Him

When looking at the other top bantamweights that Sandhagen could fight next, a few names stand out.

Former champion Petr Yan is one spot ahead of him in the rankings but the Russian hasn’t been able to remain active for some time now.

MMA legend José Aldo could be an option, but he would need to get past Mario Bautista at UFC 307 first which would, again, leave Sandhagen waiting.

Deiveson Figueiredo is a very exciting option but “The Sandman” recently revealed that the former UFC flyweight champion turned down a fight in December.

That leaves former flyweight and bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo – but Sandhagen isn’t very confident in this fight being booked.

He believes that Cejudo is far too focused on calling his shots and taking the most favorable fights that he possibly can, remaining on the sidelines until they appear.

Sandhagen told James Lynch in a recent interview with Fanatics View that he sees “Triple C” as someone who isn’t interested in a fight, until it suits him perfectly.

“Henry’s another guy that kind of makes me nervous. It’s not in like a fight sense but in like a way like is this guy actually gonna show up? I feel like Henry’s kind of thing right now is to say that he’s hurt until there’s a match-up that he really wants and then he goes after that one, you know?

“it does irk me a little bit that Henry gets to just come back and then have every single fight that he’s asking for and I think that that’s gotta like, that can’t be the case. Like he just got beat pretty significantly by Merab. You can fight down the rankings a little bit and fight some guys that we’ve beaten before if you want to work your way up, but you don’t get to just be like this figure that calls his fights and gets them every single time.”
