Earlier today (Dec. 22, 2016), it was announced that the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) had informed Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino of a possible anti-doping violation. The UFC quickly released a statement on the news, although the promotion did not say exactly what substance Justino tested positive for.

The Brazilian’s team, however, is claiming that the failed test was ‘not for a steroid’:

“Not for a steroid, and she has a prescription as part of the post fight therapy she’s been receiving due to the severe weight cut,” Justino rep Ray Elbe wrote on the popular MMA message board The Underground (Via MMAJunkie). “This has been known for a few days, and Cris’ doctor has been in direct contact with USADA turning over all the necessary patient files to document the reasons Cris needs the medication.”

It appears as if Elbe is relating the failed test to the brutal weight cut “Cyborg” puts herself through to get down to the 140-pound limit, where she has fought at in her last two UFC appearances:

“Cris had issues with her kidneys and blood pressure, and that’s part of a prescription she’s been seeking for therapy,” Elbe wrote. “Cris doctor works with several Olympic and UFC athletes who are also under USADA testing and this was part of the treatment given to her the Monday after the weigh-ins.”

“Cris has not misused the prescription and has been assisting USADA with every request. I’m not a doctor, and so I don’t know the specifics of the prescription and the treatment purpose of each ingredient, but this treatment process is the reason Cris turned down a fight Feb. 11, as her doctor said the three cuts in eight months were damaging her body.”

“I suspect her doctor (will) speak to the media about the specifics eventually.”

As far as turning down fights goes, it was reported recently that “Cyborg” had turned down multiple fights for the UFC’s inaugural 145-pound championship, which will be on the line when Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie fight in February.

Elbe also admitted that Justino will likely receive a ‘penalty’ no matter the situation:

“It’s really a shame,” Elbe wrote. “Cris will inevitably receive some penalty from this. She needed the medicine to recover from the weight cut. People slammed her for not fighting Feb. 11, but she was recovering from the extreme weight cut and was in treatment. Her doctor told her the three cuts in eight months were becoming dangerous.”

Holly Holm Is Focused On Making UFC History

The UFC has decided to finally implement a female 145-pound division, something heavily campaigned for by Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino, and has granted former bantamweight champion Holly Holm and No. 11-ranked Germaine de Randamie the opportunity to win the inaugural belt.

Holm recently spoke to MMA Junkie about the exciting opportunity, something that ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ said she couldn’t refuse when approached with the chance:

“I guess I thought that it could be a step that would happen,” Holm said. “I just didn’t think I would be involved in it. I thought I would still be at the 135 (division).

“But gosh, this opportunity is right in front of me. How do you not take it?”

While Holm may have some unfinished business in the 135-pound division, suffering two straight losses since defeating Ronda Rousey for the bantamweight throne in Melbourne, she remains completely focused on the task at hand in her new division:

“You know, this is the fight that’s in front of me, and this is what I’m focused on,” she said. “How awesome to be able to fight for a new division and to be able to fight for the belt? Two belts, two different weight classes. That’s awesome.

“My goal obviously – who wants to gain a belt and then lose it? So (losing the 135-pound title) is definitely a sore spot for me, so I want to be able to fight for the 135-pound belt, as well, but that’s not something I’m of right now because I have this other opportunity in front of me.”

Ronda Rousey vs Holly HolmHolm’s ultimate goal in the sport is not only to win as many titles as she possibly can, but also make history by standing in a class of her own by conquering unheard of accomplishments:

“For me, it’s not necessarily about what other people think about me – it’s what I want,” she said. “And I want to be able to accomplish things that haven’t been accomplished before.”

Holm and De Randamie will meet for the inaugural women’s featherweight championship at UFC 208 live on pay-per-view (PPV), from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on February 11, 2017.

Dana White Blasts Cyborg, Teases Rousey vs. Holm II

The UFC has announced that the first ever women’s 145-pound title will be contested for between former bantamweight champion Holly Holm and No. 11-ranked Germaine De Randamie at UFC 208 this upcoming February.

The news comes as a bit of a shock given the fact that Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino, who has already made a successful UFC debut with two knockout victories, has been heavily campaigning for the creation of the weight division since joining the promotion.

‘Cyborg’ has taken being left out of the mix for the inaugural title as a sign of disrespect, to which UFC President Dana White recently scoffed at during a recent interview with ESPN (courtesy of MMA Mania):

“We’re out to disrespect Cyborg?” White said. “She said she couldn’t make 145 pounds in eight weeks. We offered her a second and a third fight. She turned them down. With everything I’ve got going on in my life, the last thing I’m thinking is, ‘Hey, let’s get together and disrespect Cyborg.’

“We offered three fights, and she turned them all down,” White said. “This is a business. I had two girls who wanted to fight for the 145-pound title. This is the pros. If you play for the Patriots, you don’t sit around and say, ‘I don’t feel like playing this weekend.’ We brought her in because she said she could make 135 pounds. When she couldn’t, the weight cut was too hard, we created the 145-pound division — and she still doesn’t want to fight.”

White also said that if a scenario in which Holm and and Ronda Rousey both hold UFC gold, a rematch between the two could be the next step for the 145-pound title. Not an immediate title shot for Justino:

“This is a business of opportunity,” White said. “When opportunity arises, you jump up and take it. If you don’t, the bus is gone, and it passes you by. If Holly wins and becomes a champion, and that’s the scenario [Rousey regains the title]? I guarantee people will want to see it.”

The only way for that scenario to play out is for ‘The Rowdy One’ to regain the 135-pound strap when she takes on current champ Amanda Nunes at UFC 207 later this month. If both Rousey and Holm are able to emerge victorious in their respective title bouts, one of the biggest rematches in mixed martial arts (MMA) history could be on our horizon.

‘Cyborg’ Hands The UFC An Ultimatum

Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino has taken her campaign for a female 145-pound UFC weight division to a whole new level. Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino has taken her campaign for a female 145-pound UFC weight division to a whole new level.

Justino has ruled female mixed martial arts (MMA) alongside Ronda Rousey since 2011, and with Rousey having suffered her first professional loss, ‘Cyborg’ is left to sit atop the women’s MMA mountain alone. Now that Justino has finally found her way into the UFC, owning two early round knockout wins over her adversaries, she has been forced to compete at catchweights of 140 pounds since the UFC does not currently have a female featherweight division.

The weight cut has been a strenuous one for the Brazilian champ, resulting in her heavy campaign for the UFC to build a 145-pound division around her. Recently speaking to Peruvian news outlet El Comerico, courtesy of MMA Fighting, ‘Cyborg’ has now threatened to leave the promotion if her championship weight class is not implemented into the UFC after the remaining two fights on her contract are up:

“The main thing is that I have two fights left in my division [featherweight],” Cyborg said. “I’m going to stay in my division, and see if the UFC opens up my division, or if they don’t do it, I’m going to leave.”

Furthermore ‘Cyborg’ has named Rizin and Bellator as possible landing spots for herself if the UFC does not open up her featherweight division, but says that she will continue her campaign until the conclusion of her contract and assess the situation from there:

“I’ll keep fighting so that hey open more divisions,” Cyborg said. “If I don’t have a division in the UFC, I’m going to go to another company like Rizin or Bellator or another organization where they have my division. I’ll keep fighting for that.”

Not having fought since September with her second round knockout over Lina Lansberg Brasilia, ‘Cyborg’ is eying a return early next year and is ready to take on anybody at 145 pounds:

“I don’t know yet, probably next year,” Cyborg said. “In February, I’ll be available to fight. I’m ready for whoever at 145 pounds.”

The UFC has not shown much interest in following up on ‘Cyborg’s’ requests, as it seems more likely that a 125-pound female division would be implemented first. If the UFC does want to hang on to ‘Cyborg’ for the foreseeable future, it seems they’ll have to grant her wish of introducing her championship weight class of 145-pound first.

Miesha Tate Is Not A Fan Of A UFC 145-Pound Women’s Division

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champ Miesha ‘Cupcake’ Tate is looking to rebound after her devastating title loss to Amanda Nunes in the main event of UFC 200 in July, where the Xtreme Couture team member ate a nasty barrage of strikes from the heavy-handed Nunes, to where she was subsequently choked out via rear-naked choke.

Tate will take on the No. 8-ranked Raquel Pennington in the opening contest of the main card on UFC 205 live on pay-per-view from Madison Square Garden, looking to get back on track en-route to reclaiming UFC gold. Tate recently took part in a media lunch to promote the event, and was asked her thoughts on the possibility of the UFC adding a 145-pound weight class to the women’s divisions.

The conversation for a women’s featherweight class begun to catch wind when the dominant force in women’s mixed martial arts (MMA) known as Cris ‘Cyborg’ made her long-awaited UFC debut, where the Brazilian beast currently reigns as the 145-pound champion under the Invicta FC banner.

‘Cyborg’ currently struggles to make it down to the catchweight of 140 pounds at which she competes in her UFC bouts, and has been campaigning hard for the creation of a women’s featherweight class in the UFC in order for her to compete at a healthier weight. Tate, however, sees no need for the addition of the weight class at the moment, opting for a 125-pound weight class to be created first instead:

“Personally, I think that 145 should either be in Invicta or Cyborg should make the catchweight of 140, or go to 135,” Tate said (courtesy of MMA Fighting). “I think putting a 145 should come behind adding a 125. So, in order of preference, I think the 125 makes more sense before adding a 145. The depth at 145 is getting there, but I don’t think there’s enough 145ers to make it a really quality 145-pound division yet.”

“I don’t see myself probably coming down to 125 in the near future, unless it really is appealing financially,” Tate said. “I’ll probably just stay fat and happy at 135. … Show me the money. Show me the money and I might diet. I’ll only eat half that steak that I just ate.”

As for ‘Cyborg’s’ issues making the cut to 135 pounds, Tate believes it is possible for the Invicta chance to potentially make the maximum weight limit of 136 with a proper diet, noting that Justino came in at 139 pounds for her bout with Leslie Smith in May:

“Maybe there’s more that can be done to help her get her weight down and make that final cut,” Tate said. “I know she made 139 the fight before her last one. Those three more pounds is a lot, but I think with a proper diet that maybe it could be possible. I don’t know. I guess it really just depends.”

Cyborg Weight CutTate believes there is no shortage of challengers that will fight ‘Cyborg’ at 140 pounds, herself included, and that she is just glad she isn’t the one who has to make those decisions:

“I’m glad I don’t have to answer that question,” Tate said. “That is a tough spot. I think they’ve been doing the best that they can, having a catchweight at 140. There’s plenty of women at 135 that will step up to the challenge and fight her.”

‘Cyborg’ has yet to be booked for another bout inside the Octagon as of this writing, but as for Tate, she has quite the task in front of her in Pennington who is riding the momentum of a three-fight win streak, with aspirations to hold UFC gold of her own.

Tate and Pennington will meet on the main card of UFC 205 live on pay-per-view (PPV), from the Madison Square Garden arena in New York City on November 12, 2016.

Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino openly criticized the UFC for not promoting her as heavily, as opposed to if she had “blonde hair and blue eyes” when she appeared on FS1’s Speak for Yourself.

Recently UFC President Dana White appeared on the same program to respond to the Brazilian’s comments, courtesy of MMA Fighting, and explained the differences between ‘Cyborg’ and former UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey when it comes to becoming a star:

“Let me ask you a question: what makes somebody a star?” White said. “What has been done with Ronda (Rousey) that hasn’t been done with Cyborg, as far as being a star? Ronda is a world champion, had the belt and everything else. We don’t have a belt in that (featherweight) division. We don’t have that weight division for Cyborg … because there aren’t enough good women at 145 pounds to create an entire division.”

“I actually run the business, I actually know what’s going on. She can say it’s B.S. (that there aren’t enough women). I actually know.”

092416-UFC-Cris-Cyborg.vadapt.980.high.81[1]White would then go on to discuss the possibility of the long awaited ‘Cyborg’ vs. Rousey bout that fans have been clamoring for, which White promised would happen if ‘Rowdy’ emerges victorious in her next bout come December:

“Ronda Rousey makes a lot of money,” White said. “She gets a lot of attention. She’s doing movies. She has all kinds of other sponsorship deals and all these other things outside of the Octagon too. And listen, other people look at them and say, ‘hey, I should have that too. Why do I not have that too?’ And of course, that’s my fault. You know what I mean? That’s my fault because it’s not happening.

“But the reality is this: Cris Cyborg is devastatingly good,” White continued. “She’s been destroying everybody right now. Her popularity is actually starting to go [up]. She’s getting bigger. Everybody wants it right here, right now. It doesn’t happen that way. I promise you this, Ronda has to come in and fight on December 30th. Okay? Ronda has to win, and the girl that she’s fighting is no pushover. She’s nasty and tough and Ronda’s got a fight on her hands there.

“She wins that fight, her and Cris Cyborg are eventually going to fight. Ronda wants that fight. It will be the biggest pay-per-view in UFC history.”

When pressed with the question of when ‘eventually’ actually is, White wouldn’t budge and said the UFC would have to wait and see after the result of Rousey’s upcoming bout with Amanda Nunes:

“We’ll see what happens,” White said. “This thing’s got to play out first and we’ll see what happens.”

Cyborg-RouseyNunes will meet Rousey in the main event of UFC 207 for the UFC women’s bantamweight title live on pay-per-view (PPV), from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on December 30, 2016.
