Originally, Cris Cyborg Justino was scheduled to take on Megan Anderson at July 29’s UFC 214 from Anaheim, California for the vacant UFC featherweight title, but late last night, it was announced that Anderson had withdrawn from the bout. Now, Cyborg will be taking on Invicta FC bantamweight champion Tonya Evinger.

In a statement released to Combate, Cyborg blamed the opponent change on the ‘irresponsibility’ of Anderson, although she also said that a bout with Evinger will be more ‘exciting’:

“I’m always training to evolve technically with each fight,” the statement, in her native Portuguese, reads. “I’m prepared to fight anyone. As for the change in opponent, we can say it’s the result of Megan’s and her manager’s irresponsibility. As for Tonya, she’s a great opponent. She’s been winning her past 10 fights and is an example of how the world rankings should be independent from the UFC’s rankings.

“Tonya is a top-10 bantamweight and certainly deserves to be in a big platform. It will be a great fight and I believe that, with Tonya, it will be an even more exciting fight for the fans than the fight with Megan. The focus and the plan remain the same: going for the belt. Thank you to all my fans #CyborgNation.”

In her last 11 bouts, Evinger has compiled an impressive 10-0-1 record, while defending her 135-pound title three consecutive times to date. Despite her impressive record, Evinger will undoubtedly face the toughest test of her career when she meets Cyborg.

Cyborg has scored back-to-back stoppage victories inside the Octagon over the likes of Leslie Smith and Lina Lansberg.

UFC 214 is currently set to be headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between champion Daniel Cormier and returning ex-titleholder Jon Jones.

Invicta FC featherweight champion Megan Anderson will have the opportunity of a lifetime when she steps into the Octagon at UFC 214 on July 29, 2017 in Anaheim, California to take on Cris Cyborg for the vacant UFC featherweight championship.

Cyborg is considered by many to be the very best female fighter in the world, and she is undoubtedly one of the most feared fighters in the world. Anderson, however, is planning to prove just ‘how human’ Cyborg is:

“She’s human like everybody else,” Anderson told the Fight Society podcast (via FOX Sports). “I think a lot of people go into that fight fighting Cyborg the name and they’ve already lost before they’ve got into the cage. I don’t give a [expletive] about how many followers she has. I don’t give a [expletive] about how much reach she has. She’s a human being and I have no doubt come July 29 everyone who’s doubting me will find out how human Cris Cyborg can really be.”

Justino has fought twice in the UFC to date, scoring back-to-back stoppage victories over Leslie Smith and Lina Lansberg in 140-pound catchweight bouts. Earlier this year, the UFC introduced a women’s featherweight division, but Cyborg was not featured in the inaugural title fight. Instead, Germaine de Randamie scored a somewhat controversial decision victory over Holly Holm this past February to become the promotion’s first female 145-pound titleholder.

De Randamie, however, refused to fight Cyborg, which led the UFC to strip her of her title, and book Cyborg against Anderson, who was scheduled to headline an Invicta card in July. As far as de Randamie goes, Anderson feels as if she ‘held up’ the fledgling division:

“I think she didn’t want to come up against someone who’s going to have a lot of size advantage over her. I understand her reasoning behind [not taking the fight] but the rules aren’t what she’s wanting them to be. So you have to fight the top contenders regardless whether six years ago Cris had [tested positive] for performance enhancing drugs or not. She doesn’t get the choice. You’re the champion, you fight the No. 1 contender.”

“And while it’s great that a new champion will be crowned this summer, it will still leave UFC with plenty of problems, as there aren’t a lot of 145-pound women on the roster to keep the division busy, especially since the former champ is going back down to 135 pounds.”

Cris Cyborg: Germaine De Randamie ‘Never Wanted To Fight Me’

The UFC essentially created a women’s featherweight division for Cris Cyborg, which is why it was odd to see the promotion book Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie, two bantamweights, in the inaugural featherweight title fight at UFC 208 last February.

De Randamie ended up winning the bout in somewhat controversial fashion, but she has not fought since. In fact, the promotion recently stripped her of her title after she refused to fight Cyborg and expressed her interest in dropping back down to 135 pounds.

This didn’t come as a surprise to Cyborg, who recently claimed that de Randamie ‘never wanted to fight’ her:

“We knew she never wanted to fight me,” Cyborg told Combate. “There was some people in her camp that warned me about it, they said she wasn’t going to fight me. I wanted to close the fight as soon as possible. I believe she knew they would do that. I don’t think it came as a surprise, or that she learned about it on the internet. The UFC was in touch with her manager, they wanted to put me against her, but I knew it wouldn’t be that quick.”

“Maybe she was dropping to bantamweight to become a two-division champion. I guess that was her excuse, but she thought she couldn’t defend and keep her belt. She didn’t want the fight. Her first excuse was saying her hand was hurt, then she said she had family problems, then she called me a cheater. It was a new excuse everyday.”

Now, Cyborg is set to take on Megan Anderson for the vacant UFC featherweight title at UFC 214 on July 29, 2017 in Anaheim, California. The bout, as she labeled it, is a ‘real featherweight fight’:

“This fight against Megan is a big opportunity. She has the Invicta belt, which I vacated, so it’s a perfect match. It’s a real featherweight fight.”

UFC 214 is currently set to be headlined by a light heavyweight grudge match between champion Daniel Cormier and returning former champion Jon Jones.

It looks as if Cris Cyborg’s next opponent could be made official in the near future.

The former Invicta FC featherweight champion has expressed interest in competing at UFC 214 on July 29 in Anaheim, California. UFC President Dana White has also confirmed that the Brazilian slugger would indeed be competing on the card, but the promotion has yet to announce an opponent for her.

Originally, the UFC was targeting a bout between Cyborg and former 135-pound title challenger Cat Zingano, but Zingano revealed that she wouldn’t be healthy enough to fight at UFC 214. Cyborg, however, didn’t even appear to be interested in fighting Zingano, instead suggesting that the UFC book her against Invicta champion Megan Anderson.

Anderson was recently scheduled to headline Invicta FC 24, but that could soon change, as MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani recently reported that a bout between Cyborg and Anderson is ‘very close to being finalized’ for UFC 214:

Anderson is currently riding a four fight win streak, with all four of those victories coming by way of TKO. She most recently scored a stoppage victory over Charmaine Tweet this past January.

Cyborg, on the other hand, has scored back-to-back victories in the Octagon, stopping both Leslie Smith and Lina Lansberg in 140-pound catchweight bouts. Many consider the Brazilian to be the best female fighter on the planet and she is without question one of the most feared fighters actively competing.

UFC 214 is currently set to be headlined by a light heavyweight title rematch between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones.

Cris Cyborg Says She’s Received UFC 214 Bout Agreement

For quite some time now, former Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris Cyborg Justino has expressed interest in fighting at UFC 214 on July 29, 2017 in Anaheim, California. UFC President Dana White has also said that she will indeed be fighting on the card, although an opponent for the Brazilian slugger has still yet to […]

For quite some time now, former Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris Cyborg Justino has expressed interest in fighting at UFC 214 on July 29, 2017 in Anaheim, California. UFC President Dana White has also said that she will indeed be fighting on the card, although an opponent for the Brazilian slugger has still yet to be named

That could change very soon, however, as Cyborg took to her official Twitter account yesterday (June 10, 2017) to announce that she’s received a bout agreement for UFC 214:

The bout was not officially announced during UFC Fight Night 110 last night, but recent speculation has indicated that her opponent could be reigning Invicta FC featherweight champion Megan Anderson. Last week, it was announced that Anderson would be headlining Invicta FC 24, but MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani recently reported that a potential bout between Cyborg and Anderson was not off the table:

Cyborg had also expressed interest in fighting Germaine de Randamie, who currently holds the UFC’s featherweight title, but de Randamie has refused to fight Cyborg, while also revealing her intentions to drop back down to 135 pounds. The UFC then said a bout between Cyborg and former bantamweight title challenger Cat Zingano was being targeted, but Zingano said she wouldn’t be healthy in time for UFC 214.

With that being said, Anderson appears to be the leading option to take on Cyborg on July 29.

UFC 214 is currently set to be headlined by a light heavyweight title rematch between bitter rivals Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones, although Cyborg could slide into that headlining role if she is officially booked to fight on the card.
