Pump the brakes on talk of Cris Cyborg leaving the UFC.

The former UFC women’s 145-pound champion’s UFC deal is set to expire in March. In her last Octagon appearance, Cyborg was defeated for the first time in over a decade. After the fight, many questioned whether or not Cyborg would return to the UFC, especially with her contract expiring.

But Cyborg’s coach, Jason Parillo, shut those rumors down in a recent interview with MMAjunkie:

“We’re not going to leave the UFC,” Parillo said. “We’re going to stay there, plug away and get back the title that Cris had. She has the time and ability to do it.

“If we could get a fight between now and March, that would be wonderful, but I don’t know if that’s going to happen. The negotiations are obviously the manager’s job, and I just want the best for Cris.”

Cyborg was finished in just under a minute by 135-pound champion Amanda Nunes. She lost her featherweight title in the process. With the victory, Nunes became the first-ever female dual-weight champion in UFC history. After the fight, Cyborg called for a rematch with Nunes. That doesn’t seem very likely, as Nunes said she’d like to make her fellow countrywoman wait two years for a rematch.

UFC President Dana White doesn’t believe a rematch makes much sense. If she does, in fact, decide to leave the UFC, there are plenty of options for Cyborg. She could always pursue a career in boxing, which she has said interests her. Also, other promotions like Bellator or ONE Championship would be happy to add her to their roster.

It will be interesting to see how Cyborg’s situation plays out in the coming months.

Cris Cyborg to Amanda Nunes

Heading into 2019, Cris Cyborg had just suffered her first MMA loss since her debut in 2005 when Amanda Nunes shocked the world by knocking her out at UFC 232 in December. As her contract was coming to its end, many wondered if there would be a rematch or if Cyborg would even remain with the promotion.

In the following article, her coach sounded confident that she’d remain with the UFC. Nine months later, however, she signed with Bellator MMA and has been dragging Dana White and the UFC frequently ever since.

Former UFC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg is nearing the end of her UFC deal. Cyborg’s deal will expire in March, and there’s a real possibility she could leave the promotion.

The former Invicta FC champ has teased a career in boxing. She could even test herself in other promotions such as Bellator MMA, or even ONE Championship. Cyborg’s last Octagon appearance was a shocking one, to say the least.

She co-headlined UFC 232 from California opposite Amanda Nunes. Nunes made quick work of Cyborg, knocking her out in under a minute. With the win, Nunes became the first-ever female “Champ Champ” in UFC history. Heading into the fight, Nunes was already the 135-pound champion. With the defeat, and Dana White shooting down an immediate rematch opportunity, many are skeptical about Cyborg’s future.

Her coach, Jason Parillo, was recently interviewed by MMA Junkie. Parillo seems confident that Cyborg isn’t going anywhere, and will remain with the UFC:

“We’re not going to leave the UFC,” Parillo said. “We’re going to stay there, plug away and get back the title that Cris had. She has the time and ability to do it.”

“If we could get a fight between now and March, that would be wonderful, but I don’t know if that’s going to happen. The negotiations are obviously the manager’s job, and I just want the best for Cris.”

What do you think about Cyborg’s coach saying she won’t leave the UFC?

A lot of fans were shocked at how quickly Cris Cyborg’s loss came at UFC 232.

Last month (Sat. December 29, 2018), UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes finished Cyborg in under a minute. With the win, she also became the new 145-pound champion. “The Lioness” is now the first-ever women’s “champ champ” in UFC history. Cyborg’s coach, Jason Parillo, told MMA Junkie that he believes the Brazilian beat herself in California:

“I saw Cris go out there and beat herself,” Parillo said. “I’ve said it in many interviews before, and it was always my biggest concern – which is her just going for broke, losing the plot and swinging wild. Just going back to old school Cyborg.

“Because I told her that the higher we climb the ladder, we’re not going to be able to get away with this style. We need to think a little bit more and stay behind the jab.”

Before her loss to Nunes, Cyborg hadn’t been defeated since her MMA debut in 2005. After that, Cyborg had established herself as the most dominant female fighter in the history of the sport. She went on to become the UFC’s first-ever female featherweight champion. Cyborg picked up the biggest win of her career in December of 2017, besting former bantamweight champion Holly Holm to defend her title at UFC 219.

However, her dominance was ended by Nunes in front of millions of fight fans watching around the world. Now, Cyborg is gunning for a rematch with her fellow countrywoman.

But it looks like that isn’t very likely to occur as of right now.
