She may be considered by far the best pound-for-pound fighter in women’s MMA, but former Invicta FC featherweight champ Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino hasn’t felt that success translate over into the Octagon just yet.

The dominant knockout artist has made as many headlines for her controversial weight cuts, drug test issues, and ongoing battles with the UFC as she has for her seemingly never-ending knockouts, and many believe she should be towards the top of MMA’s stars. According to Justino, who spoke up on Twitter recently, she’ll soon be on the sixth fight of her UFC deal, but more of those fights should have came in the world’s biggest MMA outfit rather in Invicta.

If they had, according to Cyborg, her brand would already be much bigger than it currently stands:

Cyborg then detailed the UFC’s lack of – or just outright negative – promotion of her, and it’s impossible to deny she has a decent argument there. Citing YouTube videos where UFC President Dana White likened her to ‘Wanderlei Silva in a dress’ and Joe Rogan’s infamous post-UFC 193 screwup, Justino noted those two instances were damaging to her image and marketing:

A prominent MMA expert soon spoke up in half-defense of Justino when retired combatant and current Octagon announcer Brian Stann appeared on SiriusXM show ‘Toe-2-Toe’ (via MMA Junkie) to state while the UFC probably should have promoted her on a bigger stage than Invicta, she and her manager are notoriously difficult to work with:

“I agree with ‘Cyborg’ in terms of her Invicta (FC) fights. If we (could’ve found) a way to have put her on the undercard or other portions instead of Invicta, maybe that would have been great to build her brand, no doubt. But there are things that she and her manager, who her manager is primarily the one who controls her Twitter account, have to realize here: They are not easy to work with, and I can attest to this.”

“The All-American” described his experience when he tried to set up an interview with Cyborg’s team before her first UFC fight at UFC 198 in 2016. He was reportedly given a sort of runaround by George Lockhart that allowed scant facilitation of Stann’s ability to promote her in a pivotal debuting situation:

“When I set up a time to speak to her, her manager gave me a time that was my appointment to speak to her. I call. (He) doesn’t answer. I go back to him to get a meeting and set up a time, and he gives me another time. I call. No answer. I call. No answer. So then I call George Lockhart, who I knew was sitting with her or was with her handling her weight cut. George answers the phone, and I say, ‘Hey George, is Cris busy right now, I had a time set to speak to her before this fight at UFC 198.’

“(He said), ‘Bro, she’s sitting right next to me.’ I said, ‘OK, is her phone in her hand?’ He says yes. I go, ‘OK. Does she just no longer want to do this appointment?’ (He said), ‘I guess not, bro. I don’t know what to tell you.’ OK, no problem. But that doesn’t help me promote you. I actually told her manager, look, I understand what’s been said about this woman before – I am only looking to focus on the positive things and promote her as a fighter. I’ve never said anything negative about her, so she didn’t give me that opportunity to do so. OK. Fine.”

Stann then launched into some details about this reported difficulty, remind listeners that while even though she had a nutritionist the UFC paid for, she lied about her weight and also turned down big fights like a featherweight title bout with Germaine de Randamie at UFC 208, making her valid points contrast with the fact that she rarely made matters run smooth:

“The other thing about her. She gets George Lockhart to live with her and be there for her entire camp – cook all of her food. She didn’t pay for that. UFC paid for that. That’s a pretty massive advantage. That’s special treatment. That’s pretty awesome – an entire weight class made for her. She did turn down fights; I know that that did happen. She was hard to work with with them and did turn down fights. More importantly, there was a time where she decided to lie about her weight and talk about her weight cut. For some reason, she started tweeting out her weight at a current time during her cut; the UFC was able to verify and they didn’t really go too public with this, but there were some issues there too where she was lying about her weight at the time.

“I’m not saying she’s 100 percent wrong in some of the things she’s putting out there, but she’s not doing herself any favors on the flip side by being so difficult to work with.”

Cyborg then had a tattle-tale sort of response on social media, noting she hoped longtime matchmaker Sean Shelby would bring up the negative things he said about her during a meeting with UFC owner Ari Emanuel:

But Stann’s perspective wasn’t all negative, as he ended by voicing his hope that her team and the UFC could work the situation out so she could be promoted in a better fashion that truly utilized all of her unique skills and talents as one of the best competitors in the sport:

“I am hoping they can fix this. I’m hoping they can find a way to move this forward and … there’s still time to patch this up and do a better job on both sides of promoting this. But man, in my experience, she is one of the more difficult fighters to work with from my perspective, and it’s a shame because I’ve done nothing but say positive things about her and her training.

“I’ve said it before – people want to associate her with the steroids and things of that nature. I’m telling you, this woman is a phenomenal athlete. It’s a shame she ever got caught up with that early in her career, because she never needed it. I’ve watched her train. I’ve watched her cut the weight. I’ve watched her work out. Wow. It’s impressive. Very impressive, and it’s a shame that conversation can’t be had because of other things, and I think it needs to be had, and I think people will recognize over time, and I’d love to be an analyst that helps usher in that conversation about this athlete. So we’ll see what happens. I wish her and her camp the best in the future, and I hope that this can get healed and she can get promoted better.”

Earlier today the MMA world was thrown into a virtual upheaval when news arrived that Invicta FC champion and rising UFC competitor Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino had been flagged by USADA for a banned substance stemming from an out-of-competition test on December 5.

Cyborg had been involved in one of MMA’s hottest stories in recent weeks when news came she had turned down two title fights for the women’s UFC 145-pound belt, and while it’s unknown if the UFC knew about the test failure before they booked Holly Holm vs. Germaine de Randamie at February 11’s UFC 208, it certainly could have played into the decision.

Many were quick to jump on her back after her previous failure during her days in Strikeforce, but Cyborg and her representatives affirmed their stance that the substance was due to a medical treatment she had been receiving after her draining cuts to 140 pounds for her two fights in the Octagon this year. According to Ariel Helwani, she’s facing a potential maximum punishment of a one-year suspension. However, Justino claims to know what the substance was and says it was not an anabolic agent in a statement released on Facebook.

Read her entire statement right here:

I have been notified today by USADA of a potential violation stemming from an Out of Competition Sample collected Dec. 5 2016.

USADA is an independent administrator of the UFC Anti Doping policy and will be responsible for the review and any sanctioning if imposed.

It has been brought to my attention that my recent sample contained a banned substance known as Spironolactone. The substance is part of a therapeutic treatment being administered to me by doctor that started the 26th of September and is suppose to last for a period of no less than 90 days, requiring blood exams at the completion. In addition to the treatment administered to me by Dr Ulyssea M Da C O Pinto (CRM-PR19062/CRM-RJ 30150-9/CRM SC 2740/ CRM -RO 2630) I was given a medical suspension by her not to enter into competition style training or weight cutting practices during the period of recovery. It is for those reasons why I declined the UFC fight Feb. 11th 2016 for the first 145lbs belt.

I am proud to be a member of USADA, and was the first fighter to complete 1 year of testing under USADA programs before competing in UFC competition.

I have been tested 14 times since entering the program, twice in Q4 in 2016 and have never had a flagged sample.

My Dr. is experienced with USADA testing and informed me there were no additional steps needed for approval with the associated treatments given to me following my UFC Brasilia fight.

we are being fully cooperating with USADA at this time and have already started the process of applying for a retroactive therapeutic use exemption.

For my fans who are disappointed in the news, I am sorry.

You can feel confident that the substance they are inquiring about is not for performance enhancing use, and is needed for my specific treatments. (International Medical Codes CID E 87.6, CID 87.8, CID E 44.0, CID N 83.2, CID 115.9, CID Z73.3 CID E 06.3) Sept. 24. Feel confident that I am a clean athlete.

It is my hope that my experiences will continue to bring awareness to the dangers of extreme weight cutting. I cut weight 3 times in 8 months during 2016 competing twice at 140lbs. It is because of the measures needed to make the required 140lbs weight limit Sept 24 that my body is needing the on-going medical treatment.

I am glad the UFC has created the 145lbs division and look forward to fighting for the belt once my body is recovered and ready to compete. Additional information or statements will be provided at the appropriate time as the process moves forward.

Cyborg’s Nutritionist: Commision Allowed Her To Fight Overweight

Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino’s second Octagon appearance has come and gone this past Saturday (September 24, 2016), once again ending with her opponent succumbing to her superior power and striking ability in the early rounds of the contest.

The big news leading up to fight night last week, however, was if the Brazilian powerhouse would be able to make weight during her strenuous cut to 140-pounds for the catchweight contest.

A one pound allowance was to be granted to ‘Cyborg’ for the 140-pound contest, and come weigh-in morning it seemed as though all was well when Justino took the scale, before a picture of her weight hit the internet that is:

Screen Shot 2016-09-26 at 5.11.05 PMIt appears as though Justino should have handed over a bit of her fight purse over to opponent Lina Lansberg, but ‘Cyborg’s’ nutritionist George Lockhart told The MMA Hour today, courtesy of MMA Mania, (September 26, 2016) that the Brazilian Athletic Commission allowed her to come in overweight:

“From my understanding with the commission, that was allowed. God’s honest truth, man, I’m going to get you down like any UFC fighter I work with knows, they are going to be 146 on the dot, 156 on the dot and I am not going to make you cut anymore weight that is absolutely necessary.

That’s exactly what we needed so that’s exactly what we got her down to. That was up to the commission, I believe. I think you get a variable in there and a lot of people don’t know this, when you step on the scales a digital scale, especially in the US, it only goes by .5. So if you are 171.2, it rounds down to 171. If you are 171.3 then it rounds up. A lot of people don’t know that.”

Lockhart also stated that his client walked into the cage at 170-pounds on fight night, meaning that in only 24-hours Justino was able to put on 30-pounds before stepping inside the cage with Lansberg.

‘Cyborg’s’ UFC future is still unknown, however, it is believed she will continue to fight at 140-pounds for ‘super-fights’. If that is the case it would definitely be beneficial to both Justino and the fans if she received a hefty step up in competition.

Joe Rogan: UFC Needs To Build Division Around Cyborg

Beloved UFC commentator Joe Rogan may have cut down on his work load going forward with the powerhouse mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion, but that doesn’t mean the life-long fight fan wasn’t watching UFC Brasilia from the comfort of his own home. Beloved UFC commentator Joe Rogan may have cut down on his work load going forward with the powerhouse mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion, but that doesn’t mean the life-long fight fan wasn’t watching UFC Brasilia from the comfort of his own home.

Shortly after Invicta FC featherweight champion Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Justino did what she does best when she finished UFC newcomer Lina Lansberg in the second round of their main event contest at UFC Fight Night 95, Rogan took to Twitter to campaign for his employers to implicate a new 145-pound weight class for the dominant Brazilian competitor who has been struggling to make 140 pounds for catchweight bouts in the UFC:

As Rogan notes, women’s MMA has made ‘leaps and bounds’ in the past few years with dominating competitors such as ‘Cyborg’ and Ronday Rousey paving the way for young up-and-coming female stars such as UFC strawweight champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Paige VanZant:

Rogan also went on to state that if the UFC were to open up more weight classes as they have for its male competitors, it would help the women’s division of MMA grow even more:

‘Cyborg’s’ championship weight currently sits at 145-pounds where she rules as the division’s champion in Invicta FC, however, since making her Octagon debut in her past two 140-pound catchweight bouts the weight cut has been a grueling process for the dominating featherweight.

The highest weight class the UFC currently carries for women is bantamweight at 145-pounds, and if the UFC decided to indeed create a women’s featherweight division around the mythical being that is Justino it could pay huge dividends for the promotion.

Invicta FC featherweight champ Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Justino is set to make her second UFC Octagon appearance this Saturday (September 24, 2016), when she takes on Lina ‘The Elbow Princess’ Lansburg.

Justino has publicly expressed in the past the difficulty it is for her to meet the highest weight division that the UFC provides for women (bantamweight 135-pounds), and has since been taking catchweight bouts under the UFC banner at 140-pounds.

While it is only 5 pounds shy of her championship weight in Invicta, it is still a strenuous weight cut for the Brazilian phenom who is campaigning hard for the UFC to implicate a 145-pound division for its female combatants.

‘Cyborg’ recently joined Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, courtesy of MMA Fighting, and revealed that she is currently sitting at 165-pounds just days out of her contest against Lansburg:

“I fly from America to Brazil [five days ago] 168 pounds,” Justino said. “Today, I wake up 165.”

“In this camp, my nutrition coach, he starts giving to me birth control, and I never take this in my life, and I take this three months, every day,” Justino said. “My coach says it will be good for me, I believe in him, and, man I fly from America to Brazil 168 pounds. My body will hold more water than normal, and I don’t think this will really help my body.”

051616-UFC-Cris-Cyborg-PI.vresize.1200.675.high.12[3]Justino also expressed concern that she has not yet reached 150-pounds at this point in her camp, and says the only difference in her preparation for this contest and the last is that she is now taking birth control:

“This camp I don’t touch 150,” she said. “It’s really scary, I look in the mirror, I trained double and I don’t know why I don’t touch ’50. Just something different in this camp is I take birth control. Last fight, I make 140, it was successful.”

“I don’t want to say I’ll never fight 140 again, that’s probably not true,” Cyborg said. “But a lot of things have to change. If I make 140, I sacrifice a lot of things in my life, my diet, my training, my thyroid, its insane to make 140, I think a lot of things have to be put on the table before I make 140 again.”

‘Cyborg’ will meet Lansburg in the main event of UFC Brasilia live on FS1, from the Ginasio Nilson Nelson arena in Brasilia, Brazil on September 24, 2016.
