10. Michael Bisping vs. Dan Henderson

UFC 204 on October 8, 2016 – Manchester, England:

“The Count” began his unlikely title reign with a most unlikely defense, and it turned into one of the best fights of the year. Many fans and pundits – and other top contenders – maligned Henderson getting a title shot after going 3-6 in his previous nine fights. But the story was too good to pass up.

Bisping sought revenge on the man to hand him his most devastating loss, the infamous, brutal knockout at UFC 100. “Hendo” had been hinting at retirement for some time, and when the fight was announced, he claimed that it would be his swan song. The narratives were set: would Bisping redeem himself or suffer another humiliating loss to his greatest rival? Would Hendo finally capture the UFC belt that had eluded him during his hall of fame career and go out on top?

The bout was extremely tense from the outset. The stakes could not be any higher, a loss for either man a crushing blow. As many expected, the champion had success with his diverse and high-volume kickboxing, while the challenger had his bazooka right hand cocked. Toward the end of the first round, Henderson detonated his famed “H-Bomb” on Bisping’s chin, but the Brit hung on, clinging to consciousness as his American counterpart hammered him relentlessly.

The pattern repeated in round two. Bisping got out to a lead before being felled by another massive right hand. Again, he refused to go away. Henderson failed to connect with a third “H-Bomb” and thus saw his lead slip away over the final three rounds. Observers were split as to who should emerge with the victory, many even scoring the fight a draw. When the judges’ scores were announced, it was Bisping who escaped with his title reign intact.

The UFC’s year-end article ranks the top ten bouts that took place this year and although things could always change depending on how the action goes inside the Octagon at next Saturday’s UFC 207: Nunes vs. Rousey event — the final UFC show of 2016 — the number one fight of the year should be a lock regardless.

Although it may have been plagued with several near-misses and injuries, last Saturday’s (December 10, 2016) UFC 206 from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto ultimately ended up providing mixed martial arts (MMA) fans with one of the most riveting cards of the year.

The biggest part of that is definitely the card’s “Fight of the Night” (watch highlights here) between No. 4-ranked Cub Swanson and touted prospect Doo Ho Choi. The two threw down in a legendary brawl that will be remembered as quite possibly the Fight of the Year and one of the best 145-pound bouts in Octagon history.

“Korean Superboy” had rolled through all of his prior UFC competition and looked for a huge step up in competition when he called out the veteran. While the up-and-coming star fell short i his bid to skyrocket into the division’s Top 10, he certainly didn’t lose any fans because of his bout with Swanson. Both fighters threw, landed, and absorbed a seemingly never-ending streak of full power shots, resulting in a unanimous decision – and statement – win for “Killer Cub.”

It appeared the Jackson’s MMA stalwart was well on his way to stopping Choi at several points, but somehow the Korean knockout artist was able to weather the storm and fight back. Swanson told Luke Thomas on his MMA on SiriusXM show that he had never faced a fighter with such an iron chin when asked about his otherworldly ability to take damage:

“No, definitely not. I was telling my coaches backstage that I don’t even try to hit a heavy bag that hard. I remember wanting to turn around a couple of times. Toward the end, I had him on the fence, I wanted to turn around and look at the ref, like, ‘Are you serious?’ But, he just kept reviving.”

Indeed he did, and the result was one of the most scintillating fights in MMA history from start to finish. Choi has vowed to rebound even stronger and to never lose again, and his fight with a crafty vet like Swanson should only serve to motivate him to fix the leaks in his game and come back to the cage stronger and more well-rounded.

The sky’s certainly the limit for the “Korean Superboy,” and he proved he could take a full assault from one of the top featherweights in the world, who admittedly hit him with everything he had and then some.

But for now, it’s “Killer Cub’s” time to enjoy his reserugence following a downward trend against top-ranked Max Holloway and Frankie Edgar, two fights he could be looking to rematch following his return to the spotlight.

Fallout: UFC 206 Delivers On Battles For The Ages

UFC 206 was in some real trouble. The loss of the Daniel Cormier/Anthony Johnson main event made it seem like the event would be less than stellar. When Anthony Pettis and a number of other fighters missed weight the day before the event it seemed like UFC 206 was doomed (more on that later). But after all was said and done the show ended up being one of the more exciting events of the year, namely for some featherweight action at the top of the card.

The battle between Donald Cerrone and Matt Brown was one of grit, heart, and skill. Both men traded blows, both men hurt the other, and yet both men still came back for more. It was a display of what two elite level martial artists can accomplish in the cage if they just keep pushing forward. The bout was punctuated by a thrilling head kick knock out suffered by Brown and brilliantly set up by Cerrone. It was emphatic and announced to all the elite welterweights in the division that Cerrone is here to stay at 170 lbs.

The main event was also a great display of technical ability as Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis stood toe to toe trying to figure out riddle of each others styles. It made for a pretty intriguing striking battle in which both men utilized their full range of skills. It’s just unfortunate that Pettis hurt his right hand in the beginning of the fight because things were shaping up to be pretty exciting. If Pettis can find a way to make the weight at featherweight then a rematch between the two is a fight that no one would be arguing against seeing. If not, then at least we were able to see the two clash in a technical main event.

But the main and co-main event aren’t the fights that everyone has been talking about. The real show stealer at UFC 206 was clearly Cub Swanson versus Doo Ho Choi. While Choi looked strong early it was Swanson who would eventually take over and land some hellacious shots on the “Korean Superboy” nearly ending the fight on several occasions. But Choi landed some heavy leather of his own and showed that he wasn’t deterred to having a good old fashioned slugfest. The biggest take away for me in this fight was the chin and the heart of Doo Ho Choi. Like Max Holloway before him, Choi lost and lost emphatically. But this experience is likely to make him an even better fighter. Going through a war like that can sometimes show you what you’re made of and if it didn’t break Choi, it’s likely that it’s sparked a fire within him instead. In the coming years look for Doo Ho Choi to become a real monster in the featherweight division.

What was your favorite fight at UFC 206?
