An overzealous fan thought they could get the better of Curtis Blaydes with a prank phone call, but it wound up blowing up in their face.

Blaydes is coming off a knockout loss to Derrick Lewis in the main event of UFC Vegas 19. After controlling the first round, Blaydes telegraphed a takedown in the second and shot straight into an uppercut from Lewis. The mistake not only cost him the fight, but most likely a chance to fight for the heavyweight title in his next bout.

In an interview with James Lynch for LowKickMMA, Blaydes reflected on the loss and the fallout from it, particularly from one fan who thought it would be funny to kick the fighter while he’s down.

The morning after the fight, Blaydes’ girlfriend got a call from an unknown number. Confused, she handed the phone to Blaydes, who answered.

“When he called, it was like 8 AM,” Blaydes said. “It had been a long night -obviously- and he called and I looked at her face she’s like looking at her phone… I’m like, ‘Let me grab it, who is it?’ I see the area code, it’s a Pennsylvania area code. I’m like, ‘We don’t hang out with nobody who lives in Pennsylvania,’ so this is weird. I answer it and -you’ve seen the video- dude is like ‘Hey, you suck! You got knocked the f— out!’ I’m like, ‘Okay?… Bye?”

“I’ll never understand trolls,” Blaydes continued. “I get it, ‘Oh, I got Blaydes to answer the phone!’ But bro, it lasts for a minute, and what do you get from it?”

Whatever the caller thought he would get out of it, he most likely got the opposite. The man ended up having to put his social media accounts on private after being harassed by fans of Blaydes who called him out for his foolish behavior.

“Bro, as an adult, as a realist, you trolling me is going to last two minutes,” Blaydes said. “Then what do you do with the rest of your life? If that’s how you have to get happiness and satisfaction and attention, it’s not going to last very long.”

Lynch mentioned that he had brought up the call on a live stream he hosted, which was seen by a friend of the man. The caller then DM’ed Lynch a video where he claimed that he had apologized to Blaydes. ‘Razor’ said that may have been the case, but he has yet to see the apology himself.

“No, he got blocked, so how could he apologize to me?” Blaydes answered. “He might have apologized and sent the DM, but I can’t open it because I don’t know who he is. He might have been honest there, he might have, but I don’t know.”

The caller, who Lynch said “looks like the Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons,” told him that he though the call would be funny, something Blaydes obviously disagrees with.

“How’s that funny? That’s stupid,” Blaydes said. “You’re too old for that. He’s obviously over eighteen, right? Yeah, you’re too old for that. That’s a dumb answer, ‘I thought it would be funny.’”

As for how the caller ever got a hold of Curtis Blaydes’ girlfriend’s number, that remains a mystery.

“We have no idea,” Blaydes said. “I’ve asked other people that I know who are more technical, who know how to do all this stuff. They don’t know either. Her number isn’t on Facebook, it’s not on Instagram, it hasn’t been publicly posted, I don’t post it… this dude must have done his research. He hacked into a database, something, I don’t know. He put energy into this, which is really weird.”

At the end of the day, Blaydes is able to laugh the incident off and the caller ended up getting his just desserts. Perhaps this will serve as a warning to anyone else who wants to try to taunt fighters after a loss. As for this particular fan? Well, James Lynch probably put it best.

“That was a total d— move.”

Curtis Blaydes has spoken out for the first time since suffering a shock knockout loss to Derrick Lewis on February 20.

Blaydes and ‘The Black Beast’ squared off in a highly anticipated main event at UFC Vegas 19.

‘Razor’ started well and clearly won round one with superior striking.

The tables turned in round two when Blaydes shot in for a takedown and was caught clean with a picture-perfect Lewis uppercut.

Blaydes fell statuesque to the floor and the fight was over.

Speaking to James Lynch for LowKickMMA, Blaydes took the time to reflect on the fight.

“First round, I won it hands down,” Blaydes said. “I was faster, I was early. I was touching him up (with) calf kick, jabs, elbows (and) knees. We were doing what we had discussed, and everything was going great.

“The next round Sometimes when I get aggressive and I’m hunting the takedown, I forget everything else and I just go into takedown mode. That’s where he got me.”

“I put my head down there and ate an uppercut,” Blaydes continued. “Lessons were learned and I wanna grow. I have already grown mentally, and I think physically the skills are going to continue to grow. I don’t know if we are going to get the rematch because I know Derrick is a little older and he doesn’t really seem like the type of guy who’s going to be around four or five years from now.

Despite losing at UFC Vegas 19, Blaydes maintains he is a better fighter than Lewis and would beat the fan favourite 90 percent of the time.

“I’m not too worried about it,” Blaydes said. “He was the better fighter that night. But, in no way do I think he is better than me. Nine out of ten times I think I smash him. I think, he just got me you know.”

UFC heavyweight contender Curtis Blaydes has spoken out for the first time since he was knocked out by Derrick Lewis this past weekend.

Blaydes was a considerable favourite heading into the UFC Vegas 19 main event opposite ‘The Black Beast’.

‘Razor’ was riding a four-fight win streak dating back to 2018.

He’d consecutively beaten Justin Willis, Shamil Abdurakhimov, Junior dos Santos and Alexander Volkov to establish himself as a legitimate title contender before fighting Lewis.

‘The Black Beast’ had won three straight before UFC Vegas 19.

Lewis edged past Blagoy Ivanov before unanimously beating Ilir Latifi.

In August 2020, he knocked out Russian submission specialist Alexey Oleynik.

‘Razor started the fight well and was able to dictate round one with his boxing.

Things changed in round two when Blaydes ducked down in an attempt to drag his opponent to the mat.

Lewis let off a picture-perfect uppercut that knocked Blaydes out cold before following up with two huge, nasty ground strikes before referee Herb Dean was able to call the fight.

On Monday, Blaydes publicly commented on his knockout defeat for the first time.

“Sometimes you’re the hammer and sometimes you’re the nail,” Blaydes wrote on his Instagram story. “This game has a razor thin margin for error and I just got caught, it happens. Props to Derrick. No shame in it my head’s still held high.”

Derrick Lewis scored a Knockout of the Year contender in the UFC Vegas 19 main event.

‘The Black Beast’ caught Curtis Blaydes with an uppercut as the elite-level wrestler dipped down for the takedown. Blaydes was clearly out but that didn’t stop Lewis who landed two huge strikes as his opponent lay motionless on the mat before referee Herb Dean was able to call the fight.

At the UFC Vegas 19 post-fight press conference, Lewis told reporters that he is not programmed to stop unless the referee tells him to do so.

“I can’t just turn the switch off just like that,” Lewis said. “Some fighters can do that, but I can’t do it. I have to wait until the referee pulled me off because you never know what could happen. Anything could happen. He could’ve turned into (The) Undertaker and stood straight up and eat all those shots. You never know. You go until the referee says, ‘Chill out.’”

Blaydes got off to a good start and clearly won the first round.

Lewis says he remained calm despite the fact the fight was not initially going his way.

“At the end of the first round I’m like, ‘He’s messing up, he’s messing up,’” Lewis said. “That’s what I was saying in my head. His coach was trying to pump his head up, ‘Good, good. You’re doing good.’ I’m like, ‘All right, keep playing that game.’ That’s what I was saying to myself. The second round came, and I knew he was going to try to come out and stand up a little bit, and then he was trying to shoot. So I just had to be patient.”

The picture-perfect uppercut ties Lewis with Vitor Belfort for the most KO wins in UFC history.

‘The Black Beast’ says the punch was something he and his team had been working on throughout camp.

“All I was waiting on was just for him to shoot,” Lewis said. “Was just waiting for him to shoot and nothing else. We knew it was coming. … (My coaches and I), that’s what we’ve been drilling all month. Twelve weeks, really. Trying to get prepared for that guy.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)
